Pilot’s Bio
Out of Wilmington, North Carolina, there is a unique hiphop sound that can be heard. YUNG PILOT is multifaceted. He can come rough and hard with his music, and then he can bring in a smooth, softer style, but he always brings it 150%, especially in his performances. There is a reason he’s also known as the “FLY GUY” and “THE TURN UP KING”. When you hear him, you know it’s him. When you see him, you know it’s him. His style and sound are all his own. He is respected among his peers and is always focused on doing what he loves - making music.
YUNG PILOT was born Bobby Nichols in Wilmington, NC. He grew up on the south side of the Port City, but was raised in Bolton, North Carolina by his grandmother. By the age of 5, he was singing all around the region with his father and two sisters at multiple churches. As he progressed in age, he taught himself the art of rapping. He knew he was bound to be in the music industry after purchasing his first CD: a 2Pac double album. From that point forward, he worked to write his own material. Shortly after this development, he began working on free styling. At age 14, his favorite rapper and lyricist became Jay-Z. He drew great amounts of inspiration from the albums: The Blueprint 1 and 2. "Listening to that made me want to become more than an artist. It wasn't specifically because of the lyricism, but the way he continually carried himself in the rap game," explains YUNG PILOT. “The more I grew, the bigger the impact music had on me. Kanye West became the star I wanted to be, as far as knowing my craft and mastering it. T-Pain taught me about sounds and having fun. These people I named have this big impact on music and on me. Because of them my mind is now a loose paintbrush.”
In the years to come, YUNG PILOT slowly put his rapping on the back burner to focus more on Basketball. During his Senior year of high school, he was introduced to a few men that started a group named MDB (Million Dollar Boyz); he was known as “Flyer than Most”, a.k.a. “Fly”. In that group, five figures stood out as talents: Kash - the wild one; Work - the wise one; Really - the laid back one; Roc - the DJ; and Fly - the smooth one. They progressively made many singles and various Mix-tapes. During this period, there were many parties thrown in just about every hotel in Wilmington as their success grew. In due time, the group parted ways; not by choice, but people grow apart.
YUNG PILOT then moved to Chapel Hill where he met Jack Perry, a fellow musician. The duo rented an apartment together, in which they created a studio. Every minute of every hour, the two were on a music grind - producing tracks and tapes for future use. Shortly after this opportunity, YUNG PILOT walked a path that required him to move back home to his parents. Although the move was not something he was interested in doing, he ran into and became friends with James Haskins (the two had been to school together in the past, but had not seen each other since PILOT originally left town). James announced the launch of his label, PFE. This opportunity launched YUNG PILOT and allowed him to develop his style and delivery with each performance. YUNG PILOT has Nothing But Wingz. He is developing his brand with merchandise, finding and shaping young talent, and of course, making music EVERY day. This plane has taken off and there is no landing! To say the “sky is the limit” is an understatement.
“I am ‘THE TURN UP KING!’ I am ‘THE NEW JAMES BROWN!’. I am hungry for this and my plate will never be full enough. I want to say I became somebody because of the thing I love to do. I WILL STAMP THE EARTH!” - Yung Pilot
