This week’s coolest band you’ve probably never hear of goes to Chicago based trio Weatherman who are set to hit Le Cagibi’s stage this Monday with local act Amir Amiri. Weatherman is pianist/vocalist Annie Higgins, drummer Jason Toth and Joshua Dumas on exploratory electronics. Add all that up and you get richly layered hypnotic music which doesn’t feel like it was made by only three people.

So far they’ve only released a handful of tracks, my favourite being a live version of the song Outlaw:

So if you want to hear more than their online catalog has to offer I guess you’ll have to get off your butt and head down to see them!

Inspired by Mary Oliver’s poem “Wild Geese,” Weatherman pianist/vocalist Annie Higgins wrote the music and lyrics to the trio’s latest single of the same name.

A serene piano ballad, Higgins, Jason Toth (drums) and Joshua Dumas (electronics) imbue “Wild Geese” with a constant sense of movement aided by fellow Chicagoan James Falzone on clarinet.

Weatherman will release “Wild Geese” as a single with the electronic instrumental b-side “Highways” in November via La Société Expéditionnaire. The final in a series of three singles the band has released this year, Weatherman will play two free Chicago shows to celebrate “Wild Geese.” Dates follow.

die single "stormy dayz / swimming in the atlantic" möchten wir Euch noch unbedingt ans herz legen, bevor wir dieses wochenende verabschieden. es sind zwei tracks der chicagoer band weatherman, die mitte februar auf la société expéditionnaire erschienen sind. es sind leichte und luftige kompositionen, die jedoch in konzentration fallen und sich den hörer unnachgiebig packen. weatherman ist das projekt der pianistin und sängerin annie higgins und des drummers jason toth (daniel knox, the handsome family), die sich für diese aufnahmen um den electronica spezialisten joshua dumas (quarter mile thunder) und die sängerin angela james ergänzt sahen. die beiden aufnahmen entstanden im experimental sound studio unter der leitung von alex inglizian.
es geht einfach, manchmal einfacher. hört rein, Ihr werdet wissen, was ich meine. großartig auch die "outlaw" aufnahme, die Euch in sachen video vorangestellt habe. leider gibt es die single nur in digitaler natur, ansonsten wäre sie ein must have. einen schönen sonntag noch. - Das Klienicum
