"A Sound Idea"

Two decades after they bonded in band, chorus and theater at Tatnall, 2004 alumni Andrew Ferry, Michael Melton and Steve Salevan are livestreaming weekly concerts and are readying their first single. As Vox Cadre, they make “synthesized music for a synthesized future.”

After years of separately writing and performing music, they jelled at a 2016 jam in San Francisco and decided to together cook up an EP.

The EP features “All I Wanted” as the A-side and “All My Friends” as the B-side. “It may or may not be inspired by a television show,” Melton said on their 51st stream about “All My Friends.”

The two songs join five they have posted on VoxCadre.com, plus hundreds of what they called “partially baked ideas” to pull up at a moment’s notice. “So much of music is finding the right ingredients,” Salevan said of the culinary imagery he repeated during an interview from the 3½-bedroom Manhattan apartment they share with Ferry’s wife, a cat and so much equipment that they call it “a synthesizer commune.”

Melton and Salevan share duties as lead singers, while Ferry “brings out the voice of the band” as the sound engineer, said Melton, the primary lyricist.

Their lives diverged after Tatnall.

Ferry earned a degree in theater production at the University of Delaware and was a Broadway sound engineer until the pandemic shut down the industry. In May, he took advantage of his forced time off to start on a three-month cross-country bicycle tour.

“So much of this last year has been at the mercy of the virus,” Ferry said. “I wanted to do something I could control, making choices that matter.”

Melton performed in multiple bands, earned a degree in business from Temple and now works as a Citibank financial analyst.

Salevan earned a degree in computer engineering at North Carolina State University, with his musicianship growing as the local music director of the campus radio station.

He’s now a software engineer at Twitter.

Music is in their genes. Ferry’s mother is a singer and theater performer. Salevan’s grandfather was a guitarist. Melton’s father is Dennis Melton, half of the Melton Brothers, a fixture of the local music scene for almost 50 years. He’s toured with his father.

Pop-oriented covers dominate Vox Cadre’s streams, available on Facebook, Instagram, Twitch, Twitter and YouTube.

The streams offer multiple benefits. They allow them to work out their new music, Salevan said.

They also force them to keep creating. “Dad says it’s important to have a deadline,” Melton said.

And they allow them to reach fans new and old. After each stream, Melton talked with his parents. “Such a beautiful way to stay connected,” he said.

Dennis Melton passed on in May, and Vox Cadre members chose his June 2 birthday as the date to release their first single across all music platforms. - Out and About Wilmington

Bio

NYC-based dream pop synth-forward band Vox Cadre creates soundtracks to help you hang onto your heart and humanity in a depersonalized, monetized, hyper-connected world. Their music is a soothing 80’s-influenced balm to cut through the noise of modernity with a message of fierce solidarity. Vox Cadre combines big melodies with even bigger emotions, powerful ballads, electrifying vocal harmonies, atmospheric sound design, and driving dance beats into a stacked array of sonic power. And as many synthesizers (digital and analog) they can throw into the mix.

Vox Cadre spent over five years developing the sound of No Strength in Numbers, their debut album, produced by Daniel Schlett (The War on Drugs, CHAI, Booker T, DIIV, Amen Dunes, Ghostface Killah). This 8-track album runs the gamut from dream pop to shoegaze to progressive rock and is heavily influenced by Kraftwerk, Gary Numan, Brian Eno, James Blake and Genesis.

Steve is a software engineer who's been around music for most of his life. In college, he served as the local music director of WKNC 88.1FM, helping to launch the careers of bands such as Future Islands and Bon Iver. He’s a firm believer in the fact that magic doesn’t happen unless you actively seek it out. His life motto is based on increasing the presence of music, which increases the chance of magical encounters, and, after years of sitting behind a computer monitor, he can’t see that being a bad thing.

Michael is a singer-songwriter from a family of powerhouse musicians; his father and uncle formed a group The Melton Brothers, one of the most successful bands from Delaware in the 1970s. Michael has been writing songs and performing in bands for most of his life, drawing inspiration from artists like Muse, Prince, Hot Chip, and Ben Folds. Much of Vox Cadre's earliest material was derived directly from his substantial collection of solo work, and his love for big, theatrical, emotional music has very much set the tenor of the group.

Mike is a disciple of bands like Boston, Genesis, Nektar, Queen and Journey. Over the past two decades, he's created his own guitar style, informed as much by the avant garde as it is by the great shredders, legends like Tom Scholz, Steve Hackett and Roye Albrighton. When he joined Vox Cadre in January 2023, he gave the group the jolt of rock energy they were missing. Most of his life has been punctuated by some form of music and the study of what makes it tick.

The 3 current members of Vox Cadre (huge nod to Andrew Ferry, original founding member) have been musical partners in various formations since 14-15 years old and developed their musical style and love of performance along similar lines. Together again in writing their magnum opus, No Strength in Numbers, all their experience (solo and as a group) collides in a proud cohesive musical statement.

With the anticipated release of No Strength in Numbers, Vox Cadre bears a message of solidarity. “We’re in this together: let’s fight to keep our humanity alive.”
