Finally, the wait is nearly over! Husker football season starts this weekend and we tracked down a young Husker fan who enjoys the Cornhuskers so much, he wrote a rap about it. Clev Trev or Trevor Taylor is an up and coming rapper with roots in the Star City. His song Heart of the State captures the greatness of Husker football. Clev Trev’s first music video, Yesterday has over 63 thousand hits on YouTube. The young rapper will release his first album in early September. When you think of Hip-Hop, Nebraska is probably the last place that comes to mind. However, Lincoln native Clev Trev’s new single/video “What I See”, may be the kick start that the Cornhusker State needs to put it on the map. This insightful video will tug hard at your heartstrings. With that said, here’s my official $.02
The Good: I have three words for this video: relatable, relatable, relatable. This video gives a voice to so many young ladies across the country that is going through emotional struggles. Trev’s straight forward lyrics and relaxed flow sequences make the song’s poignant theme easy to connect to. Director James Michael Kriha’s storyboarding, casting, and direction are all on point; keeping the visuals crisp, entertaining and most importantly, engaging.
The Bad: I’m definitely feeling some type of way about the hook. I mean, the lyrics are good, but the delivery… that can definitely be tightened up.
Overall: This video is definitely a “Must See”. The hook may drag on a bit, but that’s small change compared to the big picture. The visuals, theme and acting performances are solid and very intriguing. The best thing of all is that anyone can relate to this insightful and introspective song. - Amp Sounds
Up-and-coming artist Clev Trev brings us “Unbreakble,” the lead single off his debut EP “Live From My Parents Basement.” Clev Trev hails from Nebraska, and although he’s new to the scene, he’s got great potential. ”Unbreakable” has a slower hip-hop feel with an old-school vibe in the chorus. Trev, who’s 22, struggled with substance abuse in his late teens, but has now found solace and expression in his music. His heart’s in these lyrics, and the visuals he dropped along with the track are evident of the quality of his work. Now that I’ve heard “Unbreakable,” I’m pumped for the release of “Live From My Parents Basement” and other projects Trev has in store for us. I have a theory that the best white rappers in all of the world come from here in the greater Kansas City metro area.
Remember that Eminem started his career from Meth Town and then moved on to great heights.
Now a guy calling himself Clev Trev has similar aspirations.

If you pictured a young man with style that looked like it walked right out of a 1930's speakeasy, who had an outsider demeanor that S. E. Hinton herself couldn't even fathom, and a songwriting ability that could eventually find a home in several people's top ten lists Then you would most certainly picture Trev Taylor, the 23 year old storytelling emcee from Lincoln NE, and the future poster child for "Rapabilly" music.
Born and raised in the working class, blue collar heart of our nation, where Country and Rock N Roll music capture the hearts of most, Trev quickly became fond of both genres, but from an early age he had an unparalleled love for Hip Hop music, which was in the midst of its first Golden Age at the time. His father, who back then was the lead singer of a regional Rock/R&B band, would play vinyl records for the two of them in the garage, albums from all decades and genres. Trev would sing along to every Doo-wop song, dance to Rock N Roll from the 50's and beyond, and be touched by the stories that all great country songs were capable of telling. His love for all music was clearly evident, but when he finally picked up a pen and started writing, it was Hip Hop lyrics that polluted his notebooks. Once he picked up the pen he never put it down.
Trev's musical pursuits became no stranger to set backs In high school it was depression, and drug abuse. After dropping out it was anxiety, and health issues, and all throughout his adolescence he battled anger issues which eventually led him getting incarcerated. 2011 became the turning point, he parted ways with his past and took to music full time, all while maintaing various day jobs to fund his dream. That year he released his first solo EP, "Live from my parent's basement" which landed him at the forefront of a thriving local music scene.
Today his resume consists of opening for many notable acts, including Macklemore, Grieves, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Nappy Roots, Machine Gun Kelly, Radical Something, Dizzy Wright, Mike Stud, and more. His music videos not only harbor stunning visuals but have grossed over 100,000 views cumulatively. His live show is quite an unforgettable experience, and his intentions of fusing elements of Rock N Roll, Hip Hop, and Country music to create what he calls "Rapabilly" music just may cook up yet another new sub genre in the industry. We can get our first taste when he releases his first full length album in early 2014. Riddled with a number of tour dates being arranged in several states, this new year may not only welcome a new Golden Era in Hip Hop, but it also just may be the year many of us become rather familiar with Trev Taylor, Hip Hop's newest greaser.
