AUSTIN, Texas -- An East Austin middle school was transformed Tuesday into a Christmas carnival.
The second annual Eastside Christmas Story took over the cafeteria and commons of Gus Garcia Young Men's Leadership Academy.
Kids enjoyed free food, presents, a live DJ and a handful of barbers offering free haircuts.
Alicia Carson, who founded Let Us Dream in 2015, created the event to focus on bringing the community she grew up in together.
"I know what it is like for children to go home and not expect Santa to show up," she said. "I know what it is like for children to go home and not be able to have a hot meal because they look forward to coming to school to eat. For these two weeks, it's crucial we make sure we give the Christmas spirit."
On top of Eastside Christmas Story, the nonprofit coordinates after school tutoring and services for families that are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
"We help them get plugged in with ACC to get their GED," Carson said. "We also help connect them with churches if they need help with their utilities or things like that."
