The Skinny: Originally released on October 15th of 2013, this free download of the song "Out Of Time", comes from the Toronto, Canada-based hard rock/metal quartet The Curse Within. Comprised of Eric Favot (guitar, lead vocals), Jonathan Mele (drums, vocals), Spencer Andrews (guitar), and Troy Ray (bass), The Curse Within take varying elements of thrash, metalcore, and heavy metal and meld them into a wicked sound that the Toronto locals are beginning to love more and more!
With influences ranging from Avenged Sevenfold and Bullet For My Valentine to Iron Maiden and Pantera, the group make use of heavy guitar riffs and soaring leads, powerful but speedy
drumming, and clean/screamed vocals to bust out some bad-ass loud music. Don't believe us? Hit play above, or better yet, grab the free download and share it with everyone you know (after you realise how awesome this band is)!

The Curse Within
This band has some varied heavy metal influences apparent in their writing. So much so that at times it's hard to tell what their predominant influences are. Not that it matters; they offer a great blend of thrash with a flavouring of old school metal. Their music is full of killer intensity and, at the same time... plenty of catchy hooks. Heavy, fast driving beats, thundering riffs, lots of shredding and raw aggressive vocals. Also woven into the sound are the textures of melodic guitar work and vocals adding a dimension of subtlety, without taking away at all from the over the top energy of the music, making for a truly dynamic and compelling sound heavy metal sound. - Toronto Underground
Thoughts:
The self titled, self released CD offers high energy metal/hard rock music. When performed live, the music fills the room. Our first CD was written and recorded at TCW's home studio and with professional studio time won at a local Battle of the Bands. The first CD has yet to be mastered.and was designed primarily for promotional purposes. The band offers a fresh, raw, and edgy sound. TCW's songs are available for download here at Sonicbids, Bandcamp, and ReverbNation. All tracks released initially at YouTube; next release by TCW and their first of the year is the song " Out Of Time". Out of Time will premiere on YouTube in the near future(late August 2013), highly anticipated by a growing subscriber base..
Work on the second CD yet to be titled is underway and completion date of late spring/early summer of 2014 - Blog
The Curse Within is a Canadian metal band originating from Toronto, Ontario. Formed by Eric and Jonathan in late 2011, The Curse Within began as the result of the late night jam sessions of two childhood friends with musical aspirations. Combining genres of the past and present, The Curse Within finds a unique way to modernize the style of music that started the genre.
"I think our proudest moment in music thus far would have to be recording our first demo EP in late 2012. However, looking into the crowd from up on stage and hearing people scream for you and your music is as good as it gets."
popVLTR: You've been making moves in Toronto, how'd you get into music? The Curse Within: TCW’s members al: l come from musical backgrounds. The Curse Within started out as the two of us (Eric and Jonathan) jamming our favorite songs together in the basement. Once we decided we wanted to start writing music, we recruited both Matt and Spencer, our buddies from high school.
popVLTR: Congrats on 'The Demons You've Unleashed', who are some of your influences? TCW: Thanks! As a band, our biggest musical influences are: Metallica, Iron Maiden, Avenged Sevenfold, Trivium, Bullet for my Valentine and Children of Bodom.
popVLTR: What are some of your proudest moments in music? TCW: I think our proudest moment in music thus far would have to be recording our first demo EP in late 2012. However, looking into the crowd from up on stage and hearing people scream for you and your music is as good as it gets. Winning BOB’s(battle of the bands) comes a close second. The interview at S@Y radio was great experience also; we played acoustic versions of our entire breakout demo. Unfortunately, the interviewer lost the session tapes(probably our biggest disappointment).
popVLTR: What cool stuff is on the horizon for The Curse Within? TCW: The Curse Within will continue to play shows frequently in and around the Toronto area. As well, we are continually writing and recording more music, so stay tuned to our facebook and youtube pages to hear brand new tracks.

The Curse Within is a rock/metal band with a melodic infusion adorning many influences. The band rocks hard and heavy, offering a high tempo/high energy performance, never disappointing; blowing out the walls. Our promo disk (TCW self titled CD) is a great project and there are many are impressed with it even though the CD has yet to be mastered. If you would like one to have a copy for yourself, you can download them at reverbnation, soundcloud, and band camp(free). TCW are gaining traction and have had meaningful discussions with a management company here in Toronto. As well, we are working hard on getting their music on the radio; hopefully within the next month. The band is awesome live, lots of energy, heavy on the guitar; they have great balance, and what they play is very intricate rhythmically and technically. - Blog
Interviews
The Curse Within
Lets start off by congratulating you guy’s on hitting #1 on Canada’s metal chart’s on Reverb Nation. How did it feel to check the site one day and see the big number one?
Checking the site to see The Curse Within in the number one spot was quite surprising to be completely honest. I think it's awesome that we have such a strong internet fan base!
Being a musician is a great gig, but a lot fans don’t realize how much work goes into it. You are a band that obviously spends a lot time not only concentrating on writing and performing but marketing as well. In the past couple years The Curse Within has definitely been making a name for itself, can you guys tell us about the work that you’ve put into this group to make it as successful as it is today?
For us, I think that the most important thing we have done to take us to this level has been our emphasis on creating good songs. I know, every band says "it's all about the music", but for The Curse Within, we really focus on making the best music we possibly can. Most importantly, We write for ourselves not for others. The band takes pride in our signature sound and we put our 100% best effort into everything this band has ever released. Aside from the song writing, The Curse Within has many supporters who put time and hard work into helping us book gigs and spread our music. Everybody who has a hand in our band, whether it be the manager, or the publicist, or the promoters, is just as important as the band members themselves in the making of the band as a whole. I think a lot of people forget how much work goes into a band behind the scenes. Countless hours have been spent writing music, practicing instruments, recording songs, booking gigs, designing artwork, making band merchandise etc. All of these factors contribute into making the final product which fans get the pleasure of being a part of.
You’ve stated that you have enough material for a new EP, where are we at on that? When can fans be expecting a new EP and what is it going to sound like compared to the last release?
In regards to new music, The Curse Within has a lot coming up in the near future. All of the new songs are fully written and the band will be heading into the Metalworks studio near the end of July. In comparison to our first EP, I would say that The Curse Within is stepping a little further into the thrash direction, while maintaining the signature sound which our fans adore. Aside from that, The Curse Within will be releasing another EP. This second EP will consist of all of our current catalogue re-recorded in much better quality. The band realizes that the current recordings don't do the songs justice. Often, a poor sounding recording is enough to turn off listeners regardless of whether or not the song is good. This EP will give a chance for all listeners new and old to hear what The Curse Within is really supposed to sound like. We think fans are going to really appreciate it. Both of these EPs will be released around the same time. An exact release date is not yet known, but the band is hard at work to make these EPs a reality as soon as possible.
You were formally known as Lost Vegas, where did the name change come from?
A long time ago in the band's infancy, The Curse Within was originally named Lost Vegas. I don't think there was a distinct reason for a name change, the band just decided we didn’t like Lost Vegas anymore and wanted a name which better suited our music(grittier and edgier).
The Curse Within has been getting some rotation lately in Ontario and Quebec, how does it feel to hear you’re hard work and dedication coming through the radio?
The band is ecstatic that our music is being recognized by radio personalities and getting some air time. The band really feels that we have something completely unique and awesome to give to the metal community. The radio support is helping us get one step closer to having our music reach internationally around the world, and I think that’s great.
I saw a post on you’re Facebook wall a couple months back that read “First real pay check of $8, wooh!!!!” which is the reality for a lot of Toronto artists. I found that until you hit certain level, you’re going to be playing a lot of shows for less the cost of gas. Then there’s the case of pay to play shows, which also seem to be growing rampant in the Toronto scene. I know music is about a passion but what do you guys think about this situation?
As a local band, I would like to be treated as a professional musician. That being said, I don't think that a venue should be forced to pay a band out of their own pocket without making revenue themselves. I personally have no problem playing a gig for free, I love playing live with my band mates in front of a crowd. However, pay to play gigs are completely insulting. Like it or not, being a musician is a job; and a time consuming job at that. Who pays to go to work? Last time I checked, people get paid to do their job. More often than not, pay to play gigs are organized by companies who gouge naive local bands of their money by promising them prizes and studio time via "Battle of the Bands". I firmly believe that it is the promoter’s job to promote their own show and get people to come out and watch. Obviously, bands should try to encourage people to come out and support, but more often than not local bands have a very limited fan base. The whole idea behind gigging is to try and create a local fan base, and this is not possible if promoters require you to pay in order to play. Put simply, pay to play shows are unfair for the bands participating and it is insulting to the local music scene, and to the craft.
You’ve played quite a few different Toronto venues, which would you say is you’re favourite?
Of all the places The Curse Within has yet played, I believe that all around, The Opera House has the nicest venue and sound system. For this reason, It is my favorite venue to play at.
The Curse Within’s sound is right in that sweet spot. To aggressive to be considered hard rock, but it’s not the other extreme of death metal. Do you ever have a hard time finding bands to fit the bill that fit nicely into you’re same genre?
Yes, it is very hard to find bills which The Curse Within fits nicely into. But I think it's a good thing. As a band, we want to stand out. We want to be the band that everyone remembers, the one that is separated from the rest. The current metal scene is extremely saturated with hardcore/metalcore "breakdown" bands. The Curse Within is here to remind the metal masses what metal is really about. While it is hard to find bills where we "fit in", I think that our music speaks for itself and that is what matters most. Being like everyone else doesn't make you acclaimed, it makes you forgotten.
You’re music has many elements to it. It’s thrashy loud and energetic and at the same time very melodic, catchy. Not only that but there are some very complicated riffs going on. When you guys are writing how to you ensure to add all these elements to the songs or do they just kind of appear?
As one of the main song writers for the band, I think that the music just comes out naturally. Nothing in our songs is placed there on purpose to create a specific type of sound. Me personally as the guitar player, I just write what I truly believe the best music is. Through that, I guess common elements seem to arise in all of the songs. But that is how I would say we derive our signature sound.
The Curse Within added a new bass player to the line-up in May. How much of a different atmosphere did finding a new player create?
Shortly after The Curse Within participated in the Wacken Metal Battle, our bass player abruptly quit the band. Thankfully, we were able to get our good friend to fill in on bass guitar until we found a suitable permanent replacement. Thanks to him, the band was able to quickly recover and get back on its feet. Fast forward to late June, the band has found our new permanent bass player Francesco Guiliano. Francesco has breathed new life into the band and we have never been more ambitious and excited then we are now.
What can we expect to see from The Curse Within in the near future?
In the near future, The Curse Within will be coming at you with two new EPs! Along with this, tons of new artwork and band merch. Possibly, a new music video to promote one of the new songs. After they are released, the band will be touring like crazy to promote and spread the music to the masses!
When fans want to find you’re music, where should they go?
If fans want to get a hold of our music and stay in touch and up to date with the band, they should "like" us on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/thecursewithinofficial. From here, you can find links to our music which is up for download as well as links to our other sites such as band camp and reverb nation. As well, you can find us on youtube where we also have our music for your listening pleasure.
You guys are all quite young and already #1 on the Canadian metal charts of RB. Can we expect to see #1 across North America by next year?
Fuck Yeah!

Bringing a monumental legacy-in-the-making of A Grade adrenalin fused and emotionally led energies to deliver a wholly fresh, uncompromisingly raw and an edge to their sound it cuts through the dross of any contemporary in their genre, ladies and gentlemen of distinguished playlist choosing, may we present the bombastic Canadian cavalcade of the chord known collectively as The Curse Within.
Exploding from their home-town live scene as one of Toronto’s most satisfying new sounds stroking the senses TCW have seen their hard edged rock entwined metal magnificence batter down the defences on all shores of the Earth, radio stations such as Mayhem Rocks in Illinois an TBFM in the UK being amongst the many eager to be amongst the first to expose the bands sound to their own audience, bear the honour of being the desk-jockey DJ that bought The Curse Within to their gratifying attentions.
Marrying the complexities of the fret-boards song with the delicacies of a group focused on the bigger picture of a song TCW have elicited such comparisons to genre establishing giants Pantera, Metallica and Iron Maiden, and re-defining artists such as Bullet For My Valentine and Children of Bodom.
Vocals that grab you by the throat before whispering sweet nothings down your ear, soaring guitar leads that lift you to the highest plateau of almost unbearable intensity, all drenched in drums injecting adrenalin directly into your Happy Gland, gloriously raised past 11 on the dial.
With The Curse Within ready to release a duality of EP’s – the first a self titled project and the second a collection of updated and new tracks entitled Seeking Vengeance – the band found Just A Minute to answer us a handful of inquiring Q’s…
MaH: Who are you all and what the name of the collective called ‘group’?
Our band is The Curse Within: Jonathan Mele Drums /Vocals, Spencer Andrews Guitar, Eric Favot Guitar,/Vocals and Francesco Giuliano Bass/Vocals
MaH: Where in the world do you call ‘home’ when you lay your hat down?
Home for the band is Toronto Ontario Canada
MaH: What genre should we be looking under to discover The Curse Within?
TCW’s music could be best described as a combination of early 2000s metal and old school metal. We’ve managed to find a very unique sound which features soaring choruses and quick guitar riffage; No particular themes are present within the lyrics as every song means something different; it’s up to the audience to listen and make their own interpretation of our lyrics and music. I honestly think The Curse Within is a fresh take on metal and something that genuinely hasn’t really be done before, completely unique and awesome for the metal community. It’s thrashy loud, energetic and at the same time very melodic, catchy.
MaH: For the impatient among us where can we go right now to sample some of your aural delights?
If fans want to get a hold of our music and stay in touch and up to date with the band, they should “like” us on Facebook here. From here, you can find links to our music which is available for download as well as links to our other sites such as Bandcamp and Reverbnation. As well, you can find us on YouTube where we also have our music for your listening pleasure.
MaH: What’s the live music scene like from your side of the mic?
The metal scene is pretty dead it’s a sad sight. It’s under promoted and the scene is overly saturated with too many bands that sound the exact same. When nothing new or exciting is booming in the underground, it’s very hard to develop. The current metal scene is extremely saturated with hardcore/metalcore “breakdown” bands. The Curse Within is here to remind the metal masses what metal is really about. While it is hard to find bills where we “fit in”, I think that our music speaks for itself and that is what matters most.I think the only way it can be fixed is by getting people interested in live music again. I firmly believe that it is the promoter’s job to promote their own show and get people to come out and watch. Obviously, bands should try to encourage people to come out and support, but more often than not local bands have a very limited fan base. The whole idea behind gigging is to try and create a local fan base. The club/electronic scene has really taken over and it leaves little space for upcoming bands to thrive
MaH: With an industry standard of ‘around three and a half minutes’ which one track would you pick to best introduce your music to our audience?
TCW has not been able to write a song under 4 minutes, given the complexity of our music. The Demons You’ve Unleashed is just over 4 minutes and it has 1,500 plays just on the one site, Youtube.
One of our more popular songs My Revenge has a running time of 5.30 minutes with over 6.300 plays on You tube as well. We don’t have a static figure between YouTube, Bandcamp, and Soundclould for total play stats. TCW also gets a lot of airplay on radio as well
MaH: Where can we stalk you online and from the privacy of under the bed-sheets?

MaH: And in that spirit of shameless self-promotion what else would you like our audience to know?
The Curse Within is about to release two brand new EPs back to back; the first a self-titled project and the second called ‘Seeking Vengeance’ with updated/re-recorded/ and brand-new music. For now, you could like us on Facebook and check out our older catalogue, but the upcoming stuff is going to be killer and I definitely recommend checking it all out when it’s released.

Bio
The Curse Within(TCW)
High tempo/ heavy energy metal and misadventure, The Curse
Within melts thrash, metalcore, and straight up heavy metal. Technical
guitar riffs, soaring leads, powerful speedy drumming, and
clean/screamed vocals are TCW's signature sound. The band cites their
musical influences as Avenged Sevenfold, Trivium, Bullet For My
Valentine, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Pantera and Children Of Bodom.
Combining genres of the past and present and rooted in classic
metal, The Curse Within finds a unique way to modernize the style of
music that started the genre and connect with fans.
TCW's music and performance pounds out the energy while being heavy
on the guitar; The band has great balance, and what they play is very
intricate rhythmically and technically.
TCW has enough material for a second EP which is scheduled for a late 2014 release.
There is plenty of interest
surrounding our band at this time and it continues to grow.
