MORE ABOUT STEVE:
Steve Gray was born in London, England with a natural born ability to play music. The only child of an Air Force Tech Sergeant and a Librarian. At an early age; his father exposed him to musical greats, such as Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. But it wasn’t until he and his parents moved to the United States that he learned to hone in on his natural musical abilities and gifts! He began receiving formal music lessons in the 4th grade in Denver, Colorado where he grew up.
Graced with unique musical talent since elementary school; he started playing the drums then progressed to playing the saxophone, while in junior high and high school. As an adolescent, he was inspired by musicians such as Grover Washington Jr and Ronnie Laws. He had never heard jazz music like the sounds that was coming from Grover Washington Jr. and Ronnie Laws! He slowly veered away from the traditional music that he grew up listening to and playing. He vowed to learn and master this new funk jazz music! ...And that he did! He practiced and practiced Grover Washington, Jr's Mr. Magic until he had perfected every note and every riff.
One day, while practicing "Mr. Magic," a neighbor who owned a local nightclub, heard him rehearsing and invited him to play with her house band! It was at that moment when Steve began performing in front of live audiences. He was honored to play with some of the Musicians whom he was playing with at the club. "Mr. Magic" was his signature song! It was that song that gave him his 1st standing ovation! Steve described his first standing ovation as being, “the best feeling that I had ever experienced, even better than sex!“ It was at that time that he knew he wanted to be a professional Musician!
Steve gathered a few of his cronies and started his 1st band! Steve's 1st band was named, “Power Play!” It consisted of four members including childhood friend and Comedian, Arnaz J. They played venues and win numerous talent shows around the Denver, Colorado area!
He never loss the love for the art of jazz and R & B music! He continued to embrace and idolize modern bands and craved the music, the stage, the standing ovations and the creativity!
