Adding emotional resonance is the original score composed and performed by 17-year-old prodigy Maya Burns in a variety of styles -- traditional ranchero, corrido ballads, even Mexican Surfer Punk -- befitting the characters and their stories. (Burns and accompanist Marcos Ruedas also perform a half-hour preshow that’s well worth an early arrival.) - LA Times
Our KCBX microphones were embedded at this year's Live Oak Music Festival where Reporter Rebekah Nolan heard some incredible stories and sounds.
In this piece, she shares much of what she heard and introduces you to those who founded the Festival, and those who say their lives have been forever changed because of it. - NPR
"Maya Burns is an outstanding musician and she's got an outstanding future." - NPR

Bio
The Maya Burns Band
Composer, multi-instrumentalist,and singer-songwriter Maya Burns is now the leader of her
own band. She has opened for legends like Linda Ronstadt,
Aida Cuevas and Jose Hernandez. She has worked with the
famous music director Steve Binder, and performed at the critically
acclaimed Rubicon Theater in Ventura Ca. Her spectacular vocal range
and deep resonating alto notes with a velvet vibrato prompted Linda
Ronstadt to say that "Maya reminds me of a young Lola Beltran."
Lola Beltran was Ms. Ronstadt's mentor and the favorite singer of
Maria Callas.
Her amazing voice and natural
instinct for all things musical, combined with a lot of hard work has come
together in this band. The Maya Burn's band is a soulful blend
of folk-rock, jazz, and funk. Maya's band is comprised of her amazing vocals
complemented by three outstanding session players on drums, bass and guitar,
with Maya playing keyboards, sax and guitar.
The Maya Burns Band is all original
music. Like her voice, her original compositions are being met
with praise by critics and musicians alike. She has been called
the Mozart of her time, not only because she is 18 but also because of her
complex melodies and advanced musical sensibilities. She has been invited
to sing for presidents and visiting dignitaries since she was 11. She has
been performing continuously at music festivals throughout California and now
is composing, arranging, and leading the band.
