The Finger Guns

Music fans of the Pacific Northwest, get ready for our fourth annual year-end daily local music showcase, 100 Bands in 100 Days, where every day until December 31st, we’re showcasing a new band or artist you have to know about, presented by Verity Credit Union. Make sure you are checking the #100Bands100Days hashtag at Twitter on the daily to stay on top of all the bands featured and make sure to follow Verity on Twitter and NW_Music_Scene as well. Some days the featured act could be an established and locally-adored northwest-based musician and other times they could be a band with a small following that just hasn’t had their deserved time in the sun yet. Either way, we’re fairly confident you can come away from this daily segment with plenty of new favorites. Today’s featured artist is The Finger Guns.

While the northwest might be known as the birthplace of grunge, it also played an important role in other forms of music such as garage rock thanks to the help of bands like The Sonics and many others. Of course garage rock itself played a huge role in early punk rock and even with most punk bands on the scene today, be it in the northwest or somewhere else. So it’s always great to see today’s northwest punks keeping the three chords alive and making it feel fresh. Today’s featured band certainly has a firm grasp on their genre and does a splendid job of blending punk with a touch of garage rock and maybe a hint of rockabilly but at the same time making it relevant for 2017.

This three-piece band leaves it all on the stage every time the amps get warm. The band’s influences bring out songs that have a sensibility that spans decades: short, fast and sweet punk n’ roll assembled from bits and pieces of early 80s punk, 90s angst, 00s irony, and even a dash of country here and there.

Made up of former members of Dapper Jones, The Sun Ups, and Big Splash Champion, The Finger Guns continue to play venues all around the Northwest and are currently supporting their latest EP, Yeti.

Marcus Mac reviews the album Sasquatch by The Finger Guns.

The opening song “All The Scars” feels like the radio single. A refreshing rip roaring melody. That reminds everyone there’s still a place for classic punk/ alt rock. The vocals make me think of “Rise Against”. Powerful passionate and with driven focus. Crunchy guitars, with to the point solos layered in skillfully. Rhythmically designed drum and bass combos help to sustain an album jumping with rock energy. “Seattle Traffic” captures the band connection to their hometown. Summed in swelling guitar tone. Along with in your face lyrics and drums. The album is finished off with pounding percussions and a lightning guitar riff in “Thunderbolt! Thunderbolt!. Which was a smart way too capped off a high energy album. Although this album may lack an abundant amount of radio singles. It scores with depth of creative sound, slick lyrics, strong vocals, and overall good punk grit. - Badass Productions

The Finger Guns hail from Seattle and have announced that their Bigfoot and YETI EP’s have been re-mastered for vinyl (along with an additional new song) and the new album is pressed on beautiful antifreeze-green vinyl and limited to a run of 300.

Each album has been hand numbered by the band and a digital download is also included in each record. The opening track, All These Scars is a catchy rocker with elements of Nirvana and Husker Du mixed with The Clash! The superb Superstitious just oozes hooks and melody with a great vocal and ‘punch the air’ atmosphere.
On 4-3-2-1, The Finger Guns lay down a dirty guitar riff with a Ramones edge whilst Find A Way is a feel-good punk rock slab of power. One of the best tracks of the eleven is the bass driven Caution Meets Wind with melody and hooks creating a raucous rock and roller!

Town Crier lays down a dirty riff reminding me of Dinosaur Jr. whereas the following effort, …And The Stars is a bluesy beat driven song with accessible melody in the spirit of Gaslight Anthem. The garage rock of Overload is more Motorhead in style and approach and Seattle Traffic returns to the Ramones style albeit with a raunchy edge!

The second to last song, Circles And Squares has some 1960s melody underpinned by some dirty rock and roll guitars and the closer, Thunderbolt! Thunderbolt! The Finger Guns blend together Green Jelly with NoFX to make for something eminently catchy with their latest single $9.99 Quesadilla. The vocals whip in hints of the Descendants and Rise Against. Intense guitars, splashy drums, and a perfect bass line unite to make something that could hang right alongside The Ramones or Social Distortion. Just like a good quesadilla, there’s a tremendous amount of material stuck between the beginning and end of the effort. We’d love to hear more from The Finger Guns in the future, as they are one of the few acts that are keeping traditional punk music alive.
