The Dirty Mugs

East Grand Record Company do an amazing job releasing a diverse amount of bands and music whom are relevant to the punk rock scene. The band I am covering today is a fantastic folk and punk act out of the back woods of Eastern Oklahoma called The Dirty Mugs. Their fusion of punk rock and folk music is like none other as they they make an effort to create their own sound while staying true to their punk rock roots. What automatically comes to mind is a mix of Chuck Reagan, and rockabilly greats, the Cramps, and you can certainly hear some inspiration from the Pogues, as well.

“Wildfire” brings a certain breed of energy that you seldom hear these days. For example, the first song off the record, “Dance With Me” is a high speed folk punk track that starts the album off with a fantastic tone. The anthemic “SGAF” is another gem that is accompanied by a melody you would here from a punk rock band. As I stated earlier, the Dirty Mugs are no stranger to trying new things and expanding their musical diversity while in “O’Death”, the intro sounds like a gospel song which is eventually followed by catchy guitar licks that you would hear in a band such as the Kings of Nuthin’ as well as an accordion. I really can’t complain about a band who goes out of their way to add different elements of music to keep the listener surprised and in suspense of the next song.

A personal favorite, “Row” is a pick me up type song that makes you want to put on your dancing shoes, and dance in a circle at one of their shows. If you are interested in more roots based songs (plenty of which are on this record), I would suggest hitting the track button to “Woodsfolk” or “As close as It Gets”. The explosive “Bomb Caravan” is a socially conscious track that makes you want to pump your fist with, as well. The album ends with “Expect Resistance” which is a perfect ending to the sixteen track powerhouse known as “Wildfire”. Its a short but sweet song that gives “Wildfire” the edge it needs. Overall, this is great album with roots based influences mixed with the energy of a punk rock band. I highly recommend this album to anybody who is a fan of true folk punk.

Eastern Oklahoma’s own band of blue-collar wonder punks, The Dirty Mugs, have just released an album of brand new album of mostly original material entitled Wildfire.

The album, which is available in both attractive vinyl and digital formats (yet features separate mixes between them), kicks you right in the teeth from the get-go with the commanding “Dance With Me” and only lets up for a moment with the opening bars from the album’s only cover – a haunting version of “O’ Death” – before going full steam ahead through a total of 16 cuts.

This is not the Mugs first release – in their 10 years they’ve independently released two other full-length albums of accordion-infused, high-energy, thought provoking material, as well as a handful of EPs. But Wildfire is surely going to spread much like the title suggests with its perfect musical marriage of purpose and reckless abandon – at an average of 140 beats per minute. - Currentland

How would you describe your music? What do you think makes it unique?

Very aggressive, pummeling, yet dancy and melodic, folk music with lyrical content both focusing on social commentary as well as universal perspectives on human nature. It is unique in the sense that we implement aspects of almost every style of music in some degree, be it a few jazz style augmented chords, or key changes, or hardcore type breakdowns, spaghetti western guitar leads, or even samba interludes.

What has been your craziest tour experience?

Basque, OR. Population 10 or so (literally). We drove the wrong way out of San Francisco at stupid hours in the morning, with the driver and wing man taking unhealthy amounts of caffeine supplements, attempting to get us to Idaho. 9 hours later or so, the two that stayed up all night driving the wrong direction began showing symptoms of extremely high blood pressure, and we stopped at the first place we found, asking for assistance. Hoping to find a helping hand to maybe give some bread or water to dilute the obscene amount of trucker drugs in their system, we were very disappointed to find that all the inhabitants of Basque were a bunch of fucks. Leaving us to ourselves with our situation, the frustrations of the unaffected overcame the worry that we felt for the fellas overdosing on caffeine. We immediately began to destroy their small town while they were all at work. By the time we were satisfied, the original problem had resolved itself and we went on about our merry way.

Who do you look up to most?

Spencer fucking moody. Or maybe Afroman. Or maybe nobody. It's hard to say really.

Who/what is your favourite animal?

Petzilla. A part-chow mutt dog that was dropped off at our practice space a few years ago, and has become the most absolutely loyal beast to us that could exist.

What made you first start playing music?

We all knew at a very young age that we wanted to grow up with substance issues and give up everything we've been taught to pursue for the sake of entertainment.

What is the Dirty Mugs origin story?

Freshman year in high school, around 2004. Tron and former member Grevan Jones decided to try to start a band. An hour later or so, they invited Grampa to join. After debating with some friends for a short time about what we should call our band, our friend Boog (of the notable rap outfit, SWN) attempted to insult us by calling us "a bunch of dirty mugs," and that was that. We decided to add Wreckin'Ball on accordion in 2008, then Juice was brought in to handle rhythm guitar duties in 2010. Childhood friend, DingDING rounds out the band on drums, replacing a slew of drummers who moved on due to substance abuse, broken backs, depression, inability, banker-isms, sobriety, obsession, panic attacks, indiscretion, charlatanism, mesothelioma, the desire to follow the American dream, and Bigfoot.

If I were to show up to your place asking for a vegan meal, what would you serve? What would we do for fun?

We would probably serve Wild Turkey 101.... Pretty sure that is vegan. And for fun, we would drink it, and let the night take care of itself.

What are you passionate about other than music?

We really enjoy attempting to destroy the accepted norms of society, and partying a lot. Often both at the same time. Kinda like making people think about things they normally wouldn't, and making them incapable of thinking at the same time. We often like to do these things in the woods.

How do you think being from Oklahoma has influenced your sound?

Not so much influencing us by sound, the isolation aspect of where we are from has had a lot to do with shaping our sound and how we think. We spend relatively little time around people with expectations of how we should act, and what we should like, so we have all developed a somewhat uninhibited collection of likes and ideals. Unable to do the things people do in more populated areas, we have been forced to learn how to enjoy ourselves in more primitive ways, which gives us a very different perspective on "a good time." With weekends spent with small town folk in the wilderness doing absolutely anything we want, what we enjoy would naturally manifest into song form.

What's next for the Dirty Mugs?

The new album "Wildfire" releases digitally on September 2nd, and physically (CD/LP) on October 14th. We are planning a Northeast US tour, to be followed by a European tour in mid-2015. We will be releasing a split 7" EP, tentatively entitled "Fuck 'Em", featuring some of our heavier songs. More tour and recording for the rest of our lives. - LP Hoopla

Deep in the woodlands of Eastern Oklahoma, a fire has been smouldering for some time now. The five-piece known as The Dirty Mugs picked up guitars, drums and accordion, and struck the match. “Hardaccordion Wonder Punk” was born, and for the past ten years the boys from the backwoods have been fanning the flames in preparation for this release.
So, the sceptic in me wants to simply file this under “folk-punk” and be done with it, but that is doing these guys a bit of an injustice. Sure, the accordion and strummed acoustic six-strings make you think these boys are headed down the path towards Flogging Molly territory, and as a matter of fact the vocals remind me of Kenny from Dropkick Murphys at times. Overall though this has far more of a rootsy feel than your typical folk punk does, and the Mugs manage to create an original sound too – in particular when the guitars introduce a Western twang here and there.
This is a quality release all-round, with stylish artwork, a high level of musicianship and vocal harmonies in the right places, and a production that remains low-key without missing out on any detail. Overall a decent release which should please fans of Gogol Bordello, Talco, or other bands that are likely to wake the inner troubadour in you. - Mass Movement Magazine

Eines vorneweg: The Dirty Mugs ist eine echt gute Folk Platte gelungen. Und das ligt nicht nur an den vielen verschiedenen, schönen Vinylfarben auf der diese schnieke Platte veröffentlicht wurde und mein Sammlerherz höher schlagen lässt.

Die Band aus Tulsa Oklahoma klingen wie waschechte Rednecks und so wie Flogging Molly, wenn sie noch in kleinen Bars spielen würden. Die Songs haben Schmiss und machen Lust auf die Live-Shows der Band. Da die Jungs aber zumindest hierzulande noch vollkommen unbekannt sind, bringt das Googlen Erstaunliches zu Tage: The Dirty Mugs haben nicht nur schon Bands wie Rancid auf großem Publikum supportet, sondern waren auch Backing Band für Afroman (genau der Afroman: “Because I got high” und so).

Bei allen Tracks hat man das Gefühl, dass die Band wahrhaftig und leidenschaftlich genau so klingt, wie sie klingen will. Die Musik klingt ursprünglich, wahrhaftig, echt, authentisch und natürlich. Manchmal wird das Tempo etwas zu schnell und wild, das unterstreicht aber den Eindruck, dass The Dirty Mugs eine verdammt gute Liveband sein muss. Diese Jungs haben einen ganz eigenen, originellen Sound und erinnern mich in ihrer Energie und kollektiven Begeisterung an Ska-Bands wie Talco oder die großartigen Gogol Bordello. Auch bei The Dirty Mugs spürt man die ein oder andere Sportzigarette im Blut. Was jetzt nur noch fehlt ist noch eine Europa-Tour in kleinen, schwitzigen Clubs. Ich wäre ganz sicher dabei! - Squiview

Ihre Musik bezeichnen die DIRTY MUGS als „Hardaccordion Wonder Punk“. Folk-Punk kann schließlich jeder! Nur eben nicht so wie das Gespann aus Oklahoma, das leidenschaftliches Geschrabbel mit Akkordeoneinsatz und mehrstimmigem Gesang verbindet. Damit aber ist die Bandbreite der Jungs auf ihrem jüngsten Album „Wildfire“ längst nicht vollständig abgebildet. Schmissige Hits wie „SGAF“ oder „The Storm“ sprechen die Fingerpointer-Fraktion an, während „O Death“ eher für Rock n’ Roll-Lagerfeuerromantik und zerklüftete Weiten steht.

Mit Tulsa sind die DIRTY MUGS zwar in der bevölkerungsreichsten Stadt ihres Bundestaates beheimatet, eine im positiven Sinne provinzielle Distanz zu den Standarten der musikalisch prägenden Großstädte (in diesem Falle insbesondere Boston) lässt sie aber erfrischend eigenständig erscheinen. Die Emotionsklaviatur, die auf „Wildfire“ bemüht wird, ist vielseitig, wird aber durch den Wunsch nach Kollektivschunkeln und bierseligem In-den-Armen-liegen geeint. Und das schreit gerade deshalb nach Wiederholung, weil die Band nicht automatisch auf die ultimative Folk-Party abzielt, sondern weitschweifig jenes musikalische Terrain abseits des klassischen Kleeblatt-Punks erschließt. - Handle Me Down

Oklahoma, das sei der Bundesstaat in den US und A, wo angeblich die richtigen Cowboys leben sollen. Denn so wurde es dem Rezensenten zugetragen, von Texanern, also von Leuten aus dem Bundesstaat, wo man sie ja eigentlich vermuten würde, die richtigen Cowboys. Im Osten dieses beschaulichen Oklahomas hat es sich zugetragen, die Gründung der Band der dreckigen Krüge, der Dirty Mugs. Über zehn Jahre hat man einiges an Material zusammengetragen und sich seinen eigenen Sound angeeignet, der irgendwie gar nicht in das Bild von Cowboys passen möchte. Man könnte es so beschreiben: Captain Jack Sparrow ist mit seiner Pearl durch die Zeit und mit seiner Crew in das Jetzt gereist und hat dort, in Oklahoma, seinen Anker in den Dreck geschmissen. Dort trifft er auf Johnny Cash, ein paar Blues- und Punkrocker und eh man es sich versieht, werden die wildesten Partys geschmissen und Lieder geschmettert, noch und nöcher. Fünf junge Männer umfasst diese Crew, die dazu bereit ist, mit all ihren Instrumenten in See zu stechen, die Stimmen sind rau und es gibt keinen Titel, wo sich nicht ein lauter Chor mit einbringt. Was man in den zehn Jahren gelernt hat? Die Produktionsqualität ist dieses ominöse A und O, was welches den Mast und den Schot zusammenhält. Die Mischung ist wild und macht eine menge Spaß, sicher ist sie bestens dazu geeignet, dass nächste Irish Pub fein säuberlich in seine Einzelteile zu zerlegen. Man hat dazu auch ganze 47 Minuten Zeit, verteilt auf sechzehn Stücke, wobei manche eher Skits sind. Das Album segelt unter der Flagge von Eastgrand Records zu euch nach Hause. Wer sich aber unter dem ganzen Seemannsgarn nichts vorstellen kann,sollte sich mit Dance With Me, O'Death und Woodsfolk auf Bandcamp vergnügen und dann seine Zustimmung geben. Diese Titel bilden auch grob den Querschnitt ab, der sich durch den ganzen Silberling, die Vinylscheibe oder das was, was auf einer Festplatte an Einsen und Nullen drauf ist, zieht. Live muss das alles eine fantastische Sause sein, so mit Bierkrügen, schreienden und grölenden Mitmenschen und Fässer voller Spaß. Vielleicht hat man Glück und trifft den Kapitän der Black Pearl.

Heimgekehrt aus den tiefen Wäldern und kleinen Provinzen Oklahomas greift das Hardaccordion-Punkett die Atmosphäre der Vulkanspitzen, Alpenseen und Alpenwiesen auf und entführt die ZuhörerInen durch eines der letzten unerforschten Geheimnisse unserer Zeit: Wie entsteht eine tiefe emotionale Freundschaft, wenn es kein Zu Hause mehr gibt: I'm dreaming of home, but home was never there. THE DIRTY MUGS schaffen es, eine tiefe Verbundenheit aufzubauen, indem sie ursprüngliche, natürliche Elemente der Begebenheiten in ihre Musik einfließen lassen und dadurch die Widerstandsfähigkeit erhöhen. Dance with me, Row sind herzliche Einladungen zum kollektiven Woodfolk, das den einzigen Grund ermöglicht, das zu tun, was die Experten beim aufziehenden Sturm raten: Erst kommt der große Knall, dann bleibt meist nur eine Staubwolke übrig. It is your life, welcome to the storm! Hui, da fegen die Akkorde über Feind, Flora und Fauna hinweg, dass eineM schwindelig wird und in jedem Waldwinklel das "Oohohohohoh" als Echo widerhallt, sich alle einhaken und vergnüglich schunkeln und lachend ausrufen: "Und noch einmal!" Die Akkorde werden noch schneller, der Gesang lauter, "all together now" und wilde Gesten, die intendieren, über die Herstellung von Gemeinsamkeit eine affektive Identifikation der ZuhörerInnen mit den DIRTY MUGS und ihrer Musik zu evozieren. The Dirty Mugs beschreiben ihre Musik selbst als Hardccordion Wonder Punk. Was stellt man sich unter dieser Musik vor? Irgendetwas mit Akordeon und Punkrock. Klingt nach einer interessanten Mischung und ziemlich verrückt. Die drei Jungs aus Tulsa in Oklahoma scheinen auch crazy drauf zu sein - so nennen sie sich selbst "Juice Dingding", "Wreckin'Ball Tron Friday " und "Mr Handsome". Ich habe für euch in ihr erstes richtiges Album Wildfire reingehört gebe euch hier einen kleinen Einblick in die Musik der drei.

Soundqualität

Bei einer Band mit knapp 2000 Likes auf Facebook kann man davon ausgehen, dass es sich um keine High-Studio-Aufnahmen handelt, sondern dass das Album in Eigenproduktion entstanden ist. Der erste Höreindruck ist in Ordnung, auch wenn stellenweise ein minimales Grundrauschen im Hintergrund zu hören ist, was aber auch nur mit Kopfhörern auffällt. Auch die etwas schwierigeren Instrumente wie das Akkordeon sind gut aufgenommen. In Sachen Endmastering ist allerdings noch etwas Luft nach oben. Ruhigere Passagen mit wenigen Instrumenten klingen passabel, die Parts in denen alle Instrumente gleichzeitig spielen etwas matschig. Für eine Eigenproduktion haben die drei Jungs das Bestmögliche herausgeholt, um ihre Musik und ihren Stil ordentlich zu verkaufen.

Wiedererkennungswert

Ein Wiedererkennungswert ist bei den drei Musikern aus Oklahoma auf jeden Fall vorhanden. Zwar ähneln Rhytmen und Gesangsmuster denen der Skatepunk-Größen Anti-Flag oder NOFX, allerdings bringt das Akkordeon einen neuen Klang in die Musik hinein, der an Polkamusik erinnert. Eine wirklich interessante Mischung, die meiner Meinung nach aber noch vertieft werden könnte. Ein guter Ansatz ist in Emily zu erkennen, in dem das Akkordeon durchgehend die treibende Kraft ist und nicht die Gitarre. Mein persönlicher Favorit des Albums ist der Song Dance With Me, dessen Refrainmelodie wirklich ins Ohr geht. Ein weiterer Ohrwurm ist leider nicht zu finden, was vielleicht auch daran liegt, dass der Gesang oft undeutlich ist.

Fazit

Die Dirty Mugs machen Musik, die wirklich gute Laune macht. An der Umsetzung der Aufnahmen hapert es allerdings noch ein wenig und es ist noch eine Menge Luft nach oben. Einzelne Songs wie Dance With Me oder Emily haben durchaus Potential und würden auf Partys problemlos gespielt werden können, ohne die Stimmung dabei runter zu ziehen. - Schule der Rockgitarre
