Some Go Haunting

Pretty meets gritty in “Kids of Summer,” the new single from L.A. duo Some Go Haunting, last spotted releasing an album of elegant dream-pop, “Wandering Souls,” in 2015. True to its name, the new single is like a poolside cocktail with a twist of real, the latter provided Black Knights, the Compton rappers who were mentored by Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA and have collaborated with guitarist John Frusciante. (Black Knights’ third album “Excalibur” is on the way this fall.)

The collaboration was a made-on-Twitter affair. Some Go Haunting’s Jason Rivera asked Black Knights via social media whether they’d be open to working together; the parties — Rivera, singer Aria Pullman-Ostrander, Black Knights’ Crisis Tha Sharpshooter and Rugged Monk — convened in SGH’s downtown studio. What emerged was a dual vision of summer: the breezy, beach-y daze suggested by Pullman-Ostrander’s soaring voice, and the hot inner-city streets in the Black Knights’ flow. The elegant folk- and soul-tinged dream-pop of Some Go Haunting is the work of Aria Pullman and Jason Rivera, who after releasing an EP in 2012, elevated their profile this summer with the release of the painterly single “House of Arcadia.” The new song “Me & You” — from the forthcoming full-length “Wandering Souls” — earned them a nice payday last week. The song won a competition titled “beIN the Beat,” and the duo was flown to Miami to record a version of the song (at the Hit Factory Criteria studio) to be broadcast during the Real Madrid vs. FC Barcelona soccer match. Aria Pullman and Jason Rivera banded together in 2012 under the streaming boulevard lights of Los Angeles to create Some Go Haunting. The musicians first bonded over their dueling love and passion for rock and roll; they first released a self titled EP that dialed into that genre and boasted a variety of sounds that included fast rock, dance mash-ups, calming vocals and feel good rock-able beats. This year, the dynamic duo won a Sports Network Music Competition called “beIN the Beat” and was flown to The Hit Factory in Miami to record their hit single, "Me And You",for the Madrid vs Barcelona soccer pre-game. The live recording was aired on October 25th at 9am and the two walked away with $3,000 as a prize. * Pop rock duo Some Go Haunting have just struck gold with their uplifting track “Me & You," which received National TV exposure as part of the first “El Clásico” soccer game of the season after winning the “beIN the Beat” competition.

The duo of Aria Pullman and Jason Rivera got the privilege to record their track at the world famous Hit Factory Criteria, a Miami-based studio home to records by David Bowie and Fleetwood Mac, among others.

“Me & You” is only the beginning for the fortunate duo, who intend to feature the track on their upcoming full-length. They’ve also been busy with other projects, including contributing to the soundtracks of films “The Girl” and “Mindless.” The single will be officially self-released on November 18th.

In this exclusive interview with Jason Rivera of Some Go Haunting, we discuss their recent contest win, how they found a mutual beneficial relationship playing as a duo, and the meaning behind their infectious new track "Me & You."

Arena: To begin, congratulations on having your song featured during the first "El Clásico" game of the season. How did you guys first hear about the competition, and what lead you both to decide on the track "Me and You?" What elements do you think the song brings that rightfully fit such a massive event?

Jason: Thank you so much. We heard about the competition through Sonicbids. We chose "Me & You" because it's an upbeat song with a lot of positive energy to it. Our music hopefully conveys a wide range of feelings from song to song. "Me & You" has an energetic and emotional quality, in our minds, that a lot of people can relate to. To us, it's a track that a wide audience could appreciate and hopefully it will draw people in to listen to more of our music.

Arena: Both of you come from very eclectic musical backgrounds, almost diametrically opposed from each other. How did the two of first get together, and what lead to that mutual beneficial relationship?

Jason: We were introduced through a mutual friend, and when we first played together we worked with a bassist and various drummers until finally we realized that the core of what this band is about is the two of us. When we first broke off and decided to become a two-piece band, we weren't sure what the creative process would be like or if it would even work out. But we decided to try jamming on some new musical ideas that we had floating around. Those initial writing sessions that we had really seemed to flow well. So we kept on writing and the ideas poured out so freely and easily, and that signaled to us that we were meant to be a duo. Eventually we refined our ideas and formed them into the full-length album that we have completed.

Arena: ”Me and You" does have an all-embracing message, but it's also a pop track with some swagger to it. It's confident in its ability to reach a grand scale. Do you think the track fairly represents your body of work, and how does it compare with some of the tracks that will make it on your upcoming release?

Jason: "Me & You" is one of the catchier songs on our upcoming release and a great representation of our sound. Our music as a whole is a convergence of a wide variety of influences, sounds and emotions, which we generally thread together using pop song structures. But we also allow ourselves the freedom to write music that doesn't always bend to pop conventions and hopefully contains some surprises for our listeners. Giving ourselves carte blanche to try any idea we have and going where the song takes us will hopefully allow us continue to grow as a band and to evolve our sound over time. - Arena.com

Some Go Haunting is a duo out of Los Angeles consisting of Aria Pullman and Jason Rivera. We have always liked their dreamy beat inflected music, but just got around to checking out their video for “House of Arcadia.” It’s a lovely song and video, somewhere between a plea and a prayer, and a perfect mind and soul correction to the corrosive news and images bombarding us daily.
