Sam Kogon: “Wake Up Your Kids // Sleeping Beauty”
05 Feb 2014 — Andi Wilson
Brooklyn's Sam Kogon is a bit of an old soul, venerable enough to compare his vocals and melodies to the dark ballads of Roy Orbison in addition to mod-harmonies that will melt your heart. While this matured sensibility shines through, Kogon's stylish guitar licks fused with contemporary sonance are taking me back to early 2009, honestly being one of my favorite years for experimental indie-pop. "Wake Up Your Kids // Sleeping Beauty" could have nicely fit in the realm of releases such as The Antlers' Hospice or Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest. What's most endearing is the fervor mixed with honest emotion, forming a craving to reiteratively keep these tracks on repeat.
Kogon plans to release a full EP / LP in the near future and will be performing with a full band at Silent Barn with Montreal pop band Sheer Agony this Sunday, Feburary 9.
"Sleeping Beauty" was included on a compilation cassette titled Scrapings via Prison Art which you can order or stream here - No Fear Of Pop

Bio
Sam Kogon has had many, nearly-made-it college bands (The Vanderbuilts, Buzzy Girl Flynn) but they all broke up before they could ever hit the road. After school, he moved to New York City and soon started releasing music under his own name. February saw the release of Kogon’s two standout singles, “Wake Up Your Kids” and “Sleeping Beauty”.
Sam Kogon has many voices and many sounds and even has a time traveling rockabilly alter ego named Ronnie Crawford. Currently, Sam is getting called a “New Wave Roy Orbison.” He likes to think that if Bryan Ferry, The Modern Lovers, a pinch of Elvis Costello, and of course Roy Orbison were the ingredients to a really great soup, then you’d enjoy eating this soup, so long as you enjoy the old men and bands mentioned above.
While his solo venture isn’t even 4 months old, Sam has been playing out…a lot. Wrapping up a college tour earlier in April and already having played NYC staples such as The Mercury Lounge, Silent Barn, Pianos, Rockwood, and The Bowery Electric to name a few, Kogon, along with his merry band, are starting to make some buzz:
