Bio
"Big Band" is a genre and style. The PsychoAcoustic Orchestra
is not a big band. Also, it is not necessarily an orchestra, by
definition - PsychoAcoustic Orchestra is the name of the group. It is a
13-piece, orchestratable ensemble with the potential for 11-voice
vertical sonorities plus piano or keyboards, and percussion. It has the
capability of many different timbral combinations of woodwinds and
brass, also utilizing electric and electronic instruments, as well as,
acoustic. We are not limited to a style. While it is a vehicle for my
composition, it is just as importantly an environment in which the
individual participants can express through improvisation. The PsychoAcoustic Orchestra
is an eclectic musical ensemble - with strong roots in jazz - formed by
composer Patrick Kelly in 1990. Pat has been writing original, eclectic
music for over 30 years. The goal of the group is to blend aspects of
jazz, rock, Latin, funk, European "serious" music, and avant garde
"free" music and to communicate musical thoughts on a high artistic and
technical level [Psycho- of the mind; Acoustic - of
hearing]. Comprised of 13 of the area's best musicians, The
PsychoAcoustic Orchestra has performed at jazz festivals, in clubs, at
schools and theaters. The PAO has released 2 highly acclaimed CDs, SUPREME THING (1994) and REACTIVATION (1996).A 3rd CD release will be recorded in the spring of 2015.
