Comments: This is a band that is not easily defined. While Hines' growls and occaisionally screams in grunge-like fashion, most notably in "Apathy", "Asylum" and their cover of "In the Pines" (Nirvanna style), their musicianship is much more traditional.
"Jaded Me" and "In Youth" are the most aggressive, while the remainder of the album can almost border on the lighter side of rock. Three albums in and this band has matured dramatically in their songwriting, composition and performance skills.

This is really interesting. I can't understand why did they decide to do the CD alone.
This has commercial potentials. Go for it guys! You are way better than the stuff coming out in the (punk) music scene of today's world. Musically they are somewhere in-between indie rock ( in the most positive sense) and American hardcore punk with slight (almost invisible) emo touch.
I'd really like to see Phestur on some major label and MTV. They somehow fit there and I'm sure the boys think so also.

I suppose that we are at a time in this movement of music where we have to start calling this era something. Being that not much of interest has happened over the last ten years in the music world as a whole. I suppose that "post grunge" is as good a moniker as any.
Grunge brought the hope of playing in a band to the masses. Unfortunately, this brought us a whole lot of bands who never should have been. It seems to have taken a decade for bands to recover from the whole grunge ordeal.
The good point of the whole movement is that it produced an aftermath of bands who took some of the songwriting styles of that time, but who went a step further. They learned how to play their instruments. They learned how to put songs together.
Fujita's Pad is a very big taste of what Phestur is all about.
Weighing in at 20 tracks (19 songs) it is quite a listen.
Phestur takes the listener on a journey of their turf. The band comfortably spans everything from almost rap "Come Down" to mellow string arrangements "Epiphany".
The record is the band's first attempt at a full length release, and it does it's job. It tells you who Phestur is.
Phestur is a good band, they are versatile, and their music is interesting.
The one thing the band doesn't mention is that they play more gigs than I have ever seen any band do in a very long time.
It seems that Adam never ceases to send me gig updates that fill the calendar.

Fear not the Bottom Line! I know the first time I drove by I was a little nervous, seeing the nondescript black painted plywood veneer, and the general lack of parking. Then I noticed the police station next door. That helped.
It helped even more to go inside. Folks, the Bottom Line is first and foremost a ROCK BAR. This is the place to go to hear live music. That's what it's there for. The walls are covered with broken cymbols, which stand as symbols of hot rock shows gone by. The bar is lined with bras, which I surmise epitomize the very same thing. And this bar didn't win Scene Magazines award for best jukebox for nothing! The thing holds 100 CD's featuring such true rock classics as Zepplin, Maiden, Priest and J. Geils???
So there's plenty to listen to even before the bands start.
..........Up later was Phestur. Back once again to the lean, mean three-piece that we've all grown up with. Phestur also plays their own version of 'straight forward rock', but with a twist. Crunchy guitar, boomy bass, and thundering drums combine with catchy melodies to really grab your attention and hold it tight.
The sound of Phestur has always reminded me of early Nirvanna, but they seem to be moving in a harder direction lately. You'd think with the harder sound the drummer would've needed his crash helmet even more, but this evening it was not to be found. Maybe that's what marriage does to a guy, makes him lose his crash helmet. Actually it might not be a bad idea for Phestur to issue crash helmets to the audience members.
Primarily because their music tends to make you want to smash things. Somehow people manage to keep this urge from overtaking them, but they're stronger than I am Visit Phestur online at www.phestur.com

Phestur is a three piece rock band from the Cleveland, ohio area whose excessive playing out, and catchy grunge rock have made them one of the greater cleveland's most well known bands.
Phestur is Adam Hines (lead vocals/guitar), Jake Doerger (bass), and Scott Munson (drums).
Downtown and Underground is Phestur's first commercial release (Sonic Wave Int.) and follow up to many self-released independant albums in the last 6 years as a band. Not only was D and U very highly anticipated by "Phans of Phestur" after the band announced signing to Sonic Wave, but also recieved Grammy considerations once released.
D and U starts out with the song "Jaded Me", a very catchy tune with traces of Stranglehold to get the head bobbing. Then popping through to "Come Down", a Mike Patton-esque jam that shows that Phestur can stray from the confines of their genre.
Track five, "Song for the Departed" is the best track on the album and arguably their best song ever. It is super poppy punk with lyrics almost anyone can relate to.
Downtown and Underground demonstrates how Phestur is best when embracing their influences and twisting them into originality.
They are very much influenced by the likes of Nirvana, STP, The Ramones, Zep, and Faith No More, but wouldn't claim otherwise.
I recomend this album to anyone who like the said bands and energetic grunge-rock with a diverse trip.

"Mainly it's because we weren't stuck to the boundries of watching the clock," said Hines, an Ashland native and Northfield resident. PHESTUR axeman Adam Hines turns 39 today. To mark the occasion, the Northfield quartet drops it's fourth CD, Fine' Pompeii, with a release party in the Flats - ushering in a "Green Day-ish" sound the band has continued to develop since it's founding in 1999. "Phestur was full on punk. But slowly, we've evolved over the years," says Hines. "We've kept our formula the same. And basically, I write what I feel at the time, whether or not it's based on the confines of our specific genre." The 13-track disc about volcanoes is the latest in a string of original albums that deal with natural and ma-made disasters.
The dudes' 2000 debut, Fujita's Pad, dealt with tornadoes. The next year, the foursome released, Here it Comez, with tunes about tsunamis. The band's third record, Downtown and Underground, came out in 2004 with the theme of blackouts. The new CD is the first to be issued after the group opened for Sponge at Roc-Bar's grand opening in March. "The club," says Hines, "is a nitch fit to unveil the disc. The way they run that club is how all the clubs in Cleveland should be run. Instead of alienating bands and sucking them for money, they treat you with respect," says Hines. "That goes a long way in my book."
The record brings to an end the band's eight month labor of love to put it together. "As you learn your craft, more doors open, and you start to experience further outside your box," says Hines. "We don't play as fast as we used to, and we're not as goofy as we used to be. We can still be idiots, but we've grown and matured. The music reflects that." The party starts at 9pm at Roc Bar, 1220 Old River Road on the east bank of the Flats.
