Neumatic Music

Over the past weekend, I traveled all the way from Las Cruces, NM to the Live Music Capital of the World in Texas for a weekend with Octopus Recordings where I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with Shane Anthony over dinner at Landry's Seafood before heading out to Bonham Exchange in downtown San Antonio. It was an epic weekend, to say the least. Especially after the sold out show at Kingdom Nightclub in Austin, TX where Shane opened for Barbuto and Sian from Octopus Recordings. After saying my goodbyes and making my way back home, I got in contact with Shane and asked him to do a guest mix with us, which he agreed to do, and now here we are!

In this weeks interview, Shane shares with us a little bit about himself growing up, his greatest musical influences, when everything changed for him in Miami for WMC last year, his contributions to the growing techno scene in San Antonio, and what his plans are for Neumatic Music and as an artist in the upcoming year.

Where were you born and raised?
I was born and raised in San Antonio, TX and have been here my whole life.

Did you play any instruments growing up?
No, I didn't play any instruments growing up but I always wanted to and even tried a few times. My friends and I grew up skateboarding and by the age of 15 I had multiple sponsors from both San Antonio and California. While I continued to skate, most of my friends picked up an instrument and still play till this day.

Who are some of your biggest musical influences at this moment?
Adam Beyer and any Drumcode production always gets me amped up. Jamie Jones and The Martinez Brothers are always a breath of fresh air, and fun to listen to. Paco Osuna, Joseph Capriati, Marco Corola, Chus and Ceballos, Joris Voorn, Loco Dice, and Pan-Pot are some others that I really look up too.


When did you first get into techno and house music?
WMC 2014. We went to club Trade on South Beach for Green Velvet vs Cajmere and that night pretty much changed it all. Joris Voorn was so good we changed our plans to see him again the next night at Treehouse. The following night was Richie Hawtin presents Enter, and when we walked into the Ice Palace, I knew I was right where I belonged.

What is the techno scene like in San Antonio and what kind of things are you doing to try to make it better there?
There isn't much of a techno scene here, but it's come a long way in the last couple years. It was very rare to hear techno being played out somewhere other than Kingdom in Austin. So a group of us, Neumatic Music, got together and have worked on getting our own nights in different clubs, so we were able to do just that, play techno.

We read that you are part of a group called Neumatic, can you explain to us what that's all about?
Neumatic Music started to come together at the beginning of this year as a collective of like-minded DJs who wanted to help spread this culture throughout our city. We have a great group of DJs who can play a wide variety of tech-house and techno.

Can you tell us about some serious talent in your area that you feel is under the radar at the moment?
My buddies James Aguirre, Guy Uribe, Richard Urdiales and Bruno Romero are just a few to name that are constantly progressing and pushing towards making a name for themselves. James is all techno, all the time and has recently been aired on Techno Live Sets. Every time I listen to these guys mix, I get something from it, I learn something and I enjoy every second of it!

Do you do any of your own production? If so, how long have you been doing it?
I've collected a ton of equipment the past two years and have recently been able to put it all together in my own little studio at home. I admit I don't spend as much time as I should in there but thats all changing as we speak. I don't have any full productions done, but there are a lot of "pieces" that have been worked on by myself, along with Guy Uribe, Richard Urdiales and Chris Cruz. Basically anything I know about production has been self taught over the past two and half years. I'm really looking forward to putting the finishing touches on a few tracks and getting them released sometime in 2016.



What are your primary goals as an artist moving forward and what are some of your goals for Neumatic as well?
As an artist, my primary goal at the moment is completing my productions and getting them released under Nuematic, eventually turning it into our label.

Can you tell us about some of the best venues for clubbing in San Antonio and what makes them so unique?
The Bonham Exchange is where you can catch us every Thursday night for our Exodus parties. This club is probably the most unique in the city, located in the downtown area. This huge club has multiple rooms along with a beautiful theater upstairs that would be ideal for some upcoming techno shows...

Have you played anywhere outside of Texas?
No, I haven't played outside of the state yet. But am looking forward to the day I have that opportunity.


What do you like to do for hobbies outside of the music scene?
I still like to get out and skate when the weather permits but it's usually too hot for me to enjoy it. I would say fitness or working out would be my only hobby right now outside of music. I have blood sugar problems and sometimes it causes me to lose my appetite, which can affect my ability to perform or focus on music. So staying active not only helps me stay healthy, but gives me the energy I need to be able to work on music as much as i'd like.
