"Get To Know These Local Album Releases"

There are quite a few things that My Oh My does very well on its debut, Your Heart Not Mine. Lead singer A.M. Merker has a certain booze-drenched roughness to his voice, the kind that always sounds so good when paired with a rollicking piano and some driving guitar chords, of which My Oh My offers plenty. It's an album made for warm weather and drinking with the windows open.

Christin Kuchem-Logan and Sarah Dolt are the backup singers, and sometimes their additions work — as on the powerful title track, "Your Heart Not Mine," an anthemic show closer if there ever was one — and sometimes they're unnecessary. On "Whiskey Pillow," the oohs and ahhs feel out of place in an otherwise raucous tune. This is a small complaint and one that is easily forgiven; overall, the women are a perky reinforcement in songs that might otherwise be lost to wallowing and dirt kicking.

The lyrics on Your Heart Not Mine aren't anything we haven't heard before: drinking too much, loving too hard and trying to get life right. It's everything you'd expect from a band that has no qualms branding itself as an Americana act. To that end, My Oh My accomplishes everything it sets out to do in creating a feel-good, alt-country album that evokes the sepia-toned summers of the 1970s, and there's nothing wrong with that. Don't we often wish for times past? And My Oh My hands them over with a reassuring smile. — N.G. - The Pitch

"My Oh My's 'Your Heart Not Mine' is your Pitch Music Awards song of the day"

My Oh My's debut full-length Your Heart Not Mine came out in March, and we're still loving the easy, down-home Americana of the album's nine tracks. Lead singer A.M. Merker has a voice that sounds like it was put through the shredder and pieced back together, and his whiskey-soaked vocals sit nicely with cozy guitar melodies and the old-timey coos of Christin Kuchem and Sarah Dolt. You can hear all that in the title track from Your Heart Not Mine. - The Pitch

"Album Review: My Oh My! - "Your Heart Not Mine""

Saloon door swingin’ rock ’n’ roll outfit My Oh My! are showing listeners how to have a good time with their record Your Heart Not Mine.

The seven piece band knows how to have some foot stompin’ fun with barroom brawlers like “Whiskey Pillow,” opener “Take It With You,” and the sweet harmonies on the title track. The gravely lead vocals make My Oh My! sound like they would fit right in anywhere from a county fair to a dive bar. Mixed with the female vocals, they’re sure to get any venue singing along.

The killer guitar on “Hard On Me” and “Living Life This Way,” the stellar drums on “Your Heart Not Mine,” and the vicious keys on “I Tried” showcase the bands awesome instrumental abilities. The band describes themselves as “anthemic” and you have to look no further than tracks like “An Empty Bottle Can’t Break A Heart” to see its true.

Even in their melancholic moments (which are very few on such a feel-good record) like “If You Need Someone,” My Oh My! will leave you grinning. Your Heart Not Mine is a fantastic record, from the arrangement to the lyrics to the vocals; a great blend of country and rock ’n’ roll from the KC folkies.

"The Pitch Music Awards Preview: Album of the Year"

My Oh My jangles and twangs its way right into your heart. With harmonies so chillingly beautiful they give goosebumps (at least to me), the band creates a sonic barrage of acoustic instruments and heartfelt lyrics. Balancing on a tightrope between country and piano rock, My Oh My blazes off into their songs without hesitation. My favorite track is “Take It With You.” - Mills Record Company

Bio

My Oh My is a three-woman, five-man band from Kansas City, Missouri, that plays a big, bearhugging blend of Americana, classic rock and folk. The band's second release, the 2015 EP Wouldn't Have It Any Other Way, delivers six weighty tracks chock full of full-throated choruses, jagged guitar, rowdy keys and tent-revival-sized anthems about life as it's lived. Think the Band backing up Loudon Wainwright III, with Dylan looking on with a half-smile from the wings.

Going from 0 to 60 in four bars flat, My Oh My has eight human cylinders burning: Soulful, towering, and earnest frontman A.M. Merker leads the trio of women singers (Sarah Dolt, Melissa Geffert and Stephanie Gaume) in call-and-response hymns about growing up but not giving up. The boys in the band (keyboardist Grant Buell, guitarist Stephen Berry, bassist Jason Harper, and drummer Jacob Horpinjuk), bang out shimmering, country-tinged grooves and ballsy classic rock riffs with equal swagger.

Not all sunsets and mint juleps, Wouldn't Have It Any Other Way is a mature autumn to My Oh My's summery full-length debut, 2014's Your Heart Not Mine, which the Pitch praised as "an album made for warm weather and drinking with the windows open." This follow-up EP finds the band stepping away from whiskey-soaked folk and pushing full-bore into ambitious, anthemic rock territory that evokes the wilder side of Wilco. Aside from the poignant Merker solo "That's All Right With Me," there is nary an acoustic guitar on this record.

"Let's Make Smoke" throws a fistful of riffs and proud middle finger at the idea of settling down as an adult, while the slinky burner "Marianne" looks back wistfully at an old flame. Not so nostalgic, "Thief" tears open an old scar in hopes of finding healing tissue somewhere underneath. "Parade" beckons us to blithely "cut a rug while we've still got legs," while the title track is a by-turns seductive and piledriving sonic assault that affirms the album's central thesis: This may not be the life we planned, but we wouldn't have it any other way.

Wouldn't Have It Any Other Way was recorded, engineered and mixed by Joel Nanos at Element Recording in Kansas City, Mo. It was mastered by Wes Martin at Firewheel Recording in Garland, Tex.

History:

My Oh My was formed from the ashes of Free State Revival, a bar-hopping bluegrass band led by A.M. Merker with his cousin, Corbin Logan, plus Christin Kuchem-Logan, Al Underwood, Rob Ritter and Geremy Grote. That group put out a record, played three-hour sets in some of the seediest surburban dives the KC metro area has to offer, and broke up. Merker soon began settling down and having kids, but never quite lost the songwriting bug. Two years after Free State split, Merker was again calling on cousin Corbin and his wife Christin, and before long, the beginnings of My Oh My formed in the Logans' attic.
