My Oh My!

There are quite a few things that My Oh My does very well on its debut, Your Heart Not Mine. Lead singer A.M. Merker has a certain booze-drenched roughness to his voice, the kind that always sounds so good when paired with a rollicking piano and some driving guitar chords, of which My Oh My offers plenty. It's an album made for warm weather and drinking with the windows open.

Christin Kuchem-Logan and Sarah Dolt are the backup singers, and sometimes their additions work — as on the powerful title track, "Your Heart Not Mine," an anthemic show closer if there ever was one — and sometimes they're unnecessary. On "Whiskey Pillow," the oohs and ahhs feel out of place in an otherwise raucous tune. This is a small complaint and one that is easily forgiven; overall, the women are a perky reinforcement in songs that might otherwise be lost to wallowing and dirt kicking.

The lyrics on Your Heart Not Mine aren't anything we haven't heard before: drinking too much, loving too hard and trying to get life right. It's everything you'd expect from a band that has no qualms branding itself as an Americana act. To that end, My Oh My accomplishes everything it sets out to do in creating a feel-good, alt-country album that evokes the sepia-toned summers of the 1970s, and there's nothing wrong with that. My Oh My's debut full-length Your Heart Not Mine came out in March, and we're still loving the easy, down-home Americana of the album's nine tracks. Lead singer A.M. Merker has a voice that sounds like it was put through the shredder and pieced back together, and his whiskey-soaked vocals sit nicely with cozy guitar melodies and the old-timey coos of Christin Kuchem and Sarah Dolt. Saloon door swingin’ rock ’n’ roll outfit My Oh My! are showing listeners how to have a good time with their record Your Heart Not Mine.

The seven piece band knows how to have some foot stompin’ fun with barroom brawlers like “Whiskey Pillow,” opener “Take It With You,” and the sweet harmonies on the title track. The gravely lead vocals make My Oh My! sound like they would fit right in anywhere from a county fair to a dive bar. Mixed with the female vocals, they’re sure to get any venue singing along.

The killer guitar on “Hard On Me” and “Living Life This Way,” the stellar drums on “Your Heart Not Mine,” and the vicious keys on “I Tried” showcase the bands awesome instrumental abilities. The band describes themselves as “anthemic” and you have to look no further than tracks like “An Empty Bottle Can’t Break A Heart” to see its true.

Even in their melancholic moments (which are very few on such a feel-good record) like “If You Need Someone,” My Oh My! will leave you grinning. Your Heart Not Mine is a fantastic record, from the arrangement to the lyrics to the vocals; a great blend of country and rock ’n’ roll from the KC folkies.

My Oh My jangles and twangs its way right into your heart. With harmonies so chillingly beautiful they give goosebumps (at least to me), the band creates a sonic barrage of acoustic instruments and heartfelt lyrics. Balancing on a tightrope between country and piano rock, My Oh My blazes off into their songs without hesitation. My favorite track is “Take It With You.” - Mills Record Company
