We feature Mikey & The Drags and they fit in nicely with what I’ve been focusing on lately, a return to FUN. You can tell in an instant that these guys know how to get it done. Dick Dale guitars, harmonies, cool organ, Sonic styled vocals ,great dance or sing along songs. - 50thirdand3rd.com
So, along with their self-titled 45, mp3s on their Facebook page and an upcoming full-length CD to be released on a German label in March, the music of Mikey and the Drags will soon be available on all viable media formats. Unless the 8-Track also makes a comeback.
The band -- which currently includes singer/guitarist Drag, bassist Chris Oddo, drummer Andrew Lee and organist Austin Sepulvado, got its start in spring 2012.
That's when Drag (whose previous band had been the McKenzies) and Lee (who also plays guitar with the Wild Moccasins) decided to start a group whose sound would be firmly rooted in the Nuggets era garage/surf rock sound whose heyday was the mid/late '60s. Their first show was at Mango's that summer......... - Houston Press
Not done a new band feature for a while, but after hearing the first single from Mikey and the Drags, we’re back in the game.
Always a sucker for a band that manages to create an authentic ’60s garage sound, especially for a self-financed and released 45. That’s what Mikey and the Drags have done – and done with some style.
Fuzzy guitar, haunting organ sound and a wailing vocal, it’s all here on lead track Spill Your Guts, throwing in a decent little melody too. It genuinely could be right out of 1966. In fact, you could throw in a similar description of the reverse, Solstice (Full of Lies).
You can check it out below and you can find out more about the Texas-based band at its Facebook page. There’s also a video clip at the bottom of the page too, which features another track, a live version of Can’t Help Yourself. - ModCulture.com
Mikey and the Drags kick the door in right at the start, with “Evil One,” a bumping, head-nodding chunk of garage-pop that echoes both the aforementioned Sonics and their long-after musical brethren from the Pacific Northwest, Mudhoney (no, seriously; listen to Mikey/Miguel Ponce’s half-yelped vocals and tell me I’m wrong), all the while nodding over to early Brit-punk at the same time. And damn, I love, love, love that old-school organ sound....... - Space City Rock
