Juliana Riccardi Releases Sophomore EP Full Cup
Today, soulful singer-songwriter Juliana Riccardi has released her sophomore EP Full Cup – PRESS HERE to listen. A project of reflection, the 7-track EP details a variety of moments from self-destruction to self-acceptance, hindrance to inspiration, and the importance of a strong foundation in the relationships we have not only with others, but also with ourselves. The personal record features previously released singles “Hold For Your Woman” and title track “Full Cup” which received support from CMT.com, Americana Highways, Holler., and has been featured in Spotify’s Healin’ Blues and DittyTV’s Ditty Dozen playlists.
“This record is a culmination and celebration of my personal and artistic journey. Each song reveals another part of myself and underlines a pivotal moment in time that changed and challenged my character, my perspective and my power,” shares Juliana. “These songs were written after leaving a long relationship and my whole known life behind in New York. I found space, silence and a lot of clarity during that time, alone and starting anew. It’s been a magical experience developing this new music and allowing my stories to resonate with those who listen. It’s been a fun, wild ride and my cup is full.”
Juliana will celebrate the release of Full Cup on Thursday, October 14th at The Mint LA in Los Angeles, CA. Tickets are on sale now – PRESS HERE to purchase.
In search of truth in her expression, the Los Angeles based artist and burgeoning producer unveils a new dimension of her dynamic sound on Full Cup. The EP opens with the introspective title track which finds Juliana answering the age-old question ‘do you view life as a glass full or empty?’ as she reminisces on moments in her life that celebrate the different facets of who she is: grounded, honest, and confident. Throughout the EP, Juliana also speaks to the importance of starting anew with tender ballad “In My Soul,” acknowledging the importance of stability in order to grow on “Beam by Beam,” and the fun, gritty “Bartender” which provides snapshots of different patrons speaking to the bartender in each verse. Tapping into an edgier and raw side of her artistry, the rock-tinged “Wire” speaks to cutting the cord on a toxic relationship while call-to-action “Hold For Your Woman” demands that women be accepted for their strength, wisdom, and confidence. Full track listing for Full Cup below.
Bonding analog and digital effects to create a textural firestorm, Juliana recorded Full Cup live at the historic Dreamland Recording Studio just outside of Woodstock, NY. The record was mixed by nine-time GRAMMY Award-Winner Darrell Thorp (Beck, Radiohead, Switchfoot, Jenny Lewis, Metric) and Will Hensley and was mastered by Jim Wilson. Accompanying Juliana on the EP is a critically acclaimed ensemble of longtime creative associates and dear friends including Will Hensley [guitar, pedal steel], Jeremy McDonald [bass], Nick D’Agostino [drums], Todd Caldwell [keys], Wayne Tucker [trumpet] and Runson Willis [harmonica].
With the release of Full Cup, Juliana presents an intimate portrait of her most vibrant self, creating a serene and reflective soundscape indicative of her foundational East Coast expression and newfound West Coast clarity. The EP combines aspects of her native New Yorker grit with a number of styles that have impacted her authentic energy — including her background in Jazz Performance, connection to blues and roots, and influences of the 60s and 70s (Stevie Nicks, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Bonnie Raitt).
In some measure, each song on Full Cup expresses a shift Juliana felt in her personal life as well as her artistry. “I’m at an age when I don’t care that my musical gesture comes out as more than any one style. It’s my style. And I’m proud of that. I’m proud of this record being a heightened version of myself.”

Juliana Riccardi embraces change, reflects on decaying romance, and learns how to love herself on Full Cup, her sophomore EP that follows up on 2020’s Simple with a new air of maturity and elegance. She recorded the project at Dreamland Recording Studios in Woodstock, NY, one of the state’s most famous studios that has previously welcomed greats like Suzanne Vega and The Lone Bellow.
“It was life-changing for me,” she previously told TREMG. “To be in such a beautiful space, with so much history, analog gear, and vintage instruments. The organs! The mics! From that point, I vowed that I’d never record another way in terms of getting the live band energy and a quality recording experience. The owner, Jerry Marotta, is a well-known drummer (Hall & Oates, Peter Gabriel) and the coolest guy. I felt at home. Ariel Shafir, our engineer, did an outstanding job. It all felt natural.”
The record opens with its title track “Full Cup,” kicking off the EP with a celebration of optimism and maintaining a positive outlook on life. The soulful track highlights how dimensional life is as well as sharing the message that everyone deserves to experience self-love, no matter how tough things can be.
“‘Full Cup’ is an ode to the many flavors of ourselves and of living life with a glass-full perspective,” Riccardi explains. “The tune came to me after a challenging personal time, when I finally came to the realization – there’s a new day right here to focus on, there’s a good person in me to love, and there is romance all around us. Gratitude is a big theme in ‘Full Cup.’”
Riccardi discusses new beginnings and learning to take risks on “In My Soul,” an airy track that sounds like the beginning of spring feels. Flourishing with horns and a gentle twangy guitar, it’s a fun way to jump into the rest of the EP with an adventurous mindset!
“Hold For Your Woman” is a Fleetwood Mac-esque tribute to the divine feminine and the importance of celebrating loved ones for who they are. It’s certainly one of the most memorable songs on the EP, showing off some of Riccardi’s best vocals to date and a rockstar attitude that could command arenas in the near future.
In our previous conversation, Riccardi shared that “Wire” was the song she was most excited for fans to hear, saying it’s “the most rocked-out track and it’s just so much fun to perform.” Showing off impressive vocals and her ability to make catchy hooks out of complicated feelings, It has all the makings of an alt-rock radio hit, so be sure to check this one out if her usual bluesy sound isn’t your thing!
Perhaps the most lyrically vivid song on the Full Cup EP, “Bartender” captures a conversation between someone who’s unemployed, homeless, and single and the bartender serving them. The song goes on to tell stories about a girl named Sarah and a man named Billy before turning around and insisting alcohol (and by proxy, the bartender) is to blame for at least some of the fatalistic attitudes in the town.
Another detailed track is “Beam By Beam,” a midtempo song about the importance of being straightforward in a relationship. There’s also a tie to earlier anthem “Hold For Your Woman” – the second verse of “Beam By Beam” asks if someone will be “strong enough to stay,” while “Hold For Your Woman” ponders, “are you strong enough to let that woman be bad?”
The EP closes with the melancholy “Mad,” which describes a crumbling relationship as Riccardi recognizes her self-worth and realizes she deserves better. Her velvety vocals show off her composure in the situation, while screams in the background add an interestingly dramatic duality and highlight how her songs transcend just lyrics and melodies – they become full-blown, immersive experiences.
Full Cup is a full-circle celebration of coming into your own, finding your footing, and pushing through the hardest times of life with a hopeful attitude. Riccardi expresses a wide range of emotions while never being unnecessarily apologetic, maintaining her voice as a strong, powerful woman with a bright musical future to come.

Singer/songwriter Juliana Riccardi exhibits a quiet brilliance on her new song and video “Full Cup” from her sophomore EP, Full Cup out October 8, 2021. The track delivers the important message that our cups are full to the top most of the time and we need to better recognize it. Riccardi puts it all down over a hyper-chilled New Orleans-style ballad feel that helps emphasize the honesty in her words and the beauty of her voice. The video feels very personal and lets us all meet Juliana up close. Her vibe is incredibly engaging and each new bar will make you want to hear more. “Full Cup” is a softly-spoken gem from an artist you should be listening to already.
Juliana’s soulful, beautiful vocals over a blend of trumpets, acoustic guitar, pedal steel and soft drums, highlight her reflections on moments in her life that celebrate the different facets of who she is: grounded, honest, and confident. The video was directed and edited by Allison Baruck (Béyonce, Leon Bridges, H.E.R.) and mixed by nine-time Grammy Award-winner Darrell Thorp (Beck, Radiohead, Switchfoot).
Juliana says, “The inspiration behind the ‘Full Cup’ video was to keep it real—using locations people true to my everyday life, all of whom make my life full.” She adds, “After a really rough spring this year, I booked a camping trip with my girlfriends who are incredibly talented artists and creatively liked-minded and we brainstormed on ideas. Ultimately, I wanted the narrative of the video to be simple. Something that was warm, inviting, and full of love for the self, for family and friends, and for the sun on my face. It all felt right and I loved being able to create with my friends who I love and respect so much.”

1) You’ve said that your new EP, Full Cup, began in a Venice coffee shop. What can you tell us about that day, and what were the subsequent steps you took to complete the EP?
The single and title track, “Full Cup,” was the culmination and resolution to a long journey of self-exploration over the past 5 years – both personally and as a creative professional finding my voice. It’s brought me to feel deep gratitude and rooted in my intentions – all things that happen over time, with experience and ultimately knowing and loving oneself. That’s what Full Cup is all about.
It was a sunny morning, the day the first verse of “Full Cup” was spontaneously written, and I was enjoying coffee in my neighborhood with some friends, causally messin’ around on guitar. Bittersweet memories and reminders passed through my mind, but all along was a confident, calm, and hopeful perspective – and that’s how the song began. My journey’s trial and errors, winding roads – and bumps, are all narrated through my other songs on the record like “Beam by Beam,” “Wire,” and “Mad.” They were acoustic solo tunes, played out and fleshed out over the last few years in coffee shops, on sidewalks, at local venues and I knew for this record I wanted to amplify their delivery and give them power with a full band in a live studio setting.
2) You recorded live at Dreamland Recording Studio in upstate New York. What was that experience like for you?
I chose to record the record with my original band of gems, back in New York, at the legendary Dreamland Recording Studios near Woodstock. We played the songs live in this converted church filled with vintage gear and instruments – it was magical. We can’t wait to go back. The sonics and arrangements rejuvenated the once acoustic songs – kind of honoring their message with lush sonics and solid grooves.
3) As a native of Queens, NY, how has that place impacted your perspective of music, and how has living in Mar Vista (Los Angeles) these last several years altered it?
Leaving New York was the beginning of that deeper journey for me. It was a true change and challenge to uproot and move to a city where you have no roots and no one has expectations on you. And it made me dig deep and regroup with more clarity. Being alone after a long relationship shortly followed, making it harder but more rewarding in the end. I think I was always competitive, motivated, and driven out in New York – but something was missing. I needed to step away from the over saturated noise and from my younger self. It had to be fate, that I found Mar Vista. It’s filled with artists- painters, poets, musicians and entrepreneurs. I had no idea. I began making friends, playing causally on the sidewalks, at local shows – we’d host our own events. It was a time of ego-less sharing and creating. Everyone supported one another. It’s a time I’ll never forget. It’s where all the songs on Full Cup were written.
4) You earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jazz Performance degree from The City College of New York in Harlem. What are some of the most important lessons that you learned while working through that program, and who are some of your most beloved musical influences that you discovered while there?
I always listened to Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald back in elementary days, so I felt very connected to certain jazz singers, standards and swing music. Hanging in West Harlem on such a beautiful campus with great teachers was a wonderful experience. I learned that learning never stops and jazz is a difficult art form. There is so much to know and so many choices in music, it’s mind blowing. As singers, we learned the basics of scatting, creating song arrangements, harmony progressions, and a historical and beloved repertoire of standards. I got to know and love the music of Chet Baker, Nina Simone and Carmen McRae and so much history of how music evolved into different sub-genres. I definitely am not a Master of Jazz – but the soul and purity behind its voices has influenced me in my performing – especially my delivery. The program strengthened my ear and understanding of harmony, but you realize that years after when what we learned starts to actually sink in.
5) Bonus: Who designed the Full Cup EP artwork, and what does the imagery represent to you?
One of my best friends, Jen LaVita, who is an amazing fine artist and painter, did the Full Cup cover art painting over a high-quality photo print. We talked about the mood and tones that I wanted and she nailed it. The record is a sonically colorful project, but it’s honest and emotional and her artful touch expresses that. Nikki Portman, a close friend and extremely gifted artist and photographer, helped set the tone initially by capturing that photo. We wanted strength and vulnerability. She nailed it. - Sam Shasky - DittyTV
Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Juliana Riccardi’s song “Hold For Your Woman” from her forthcoming album Full Cup. Full Cup was co-produced by Juliana Riccardi, Will Hensley and Jeremy McDonald. Vocal production and engineering was by Riccardi, and the album was mixed by Will Hensley and Darrell Thorp (Beck, Lake Street Dive). Jim Wilson mastered the record.
“Hold For Your Woman” is Juliana Riccardi on lead and harmony vocals; Will Hensley on acoustic and electric guitar and pedal steel; Jeremy McDonald on bass, Nick D’Agostino on drums; Todd Caldwell on organ, piano, keys; Wayne Tucker on trumpet; and Runson Willis III on harmonica. Juliana Riccardi has that sultry alto vocal that immediately creates a grounded energy. This song is rooted.
We recorded my 2nd single at the legendary Dreamland Recording Studio near Woodstock, NY. We took a once-acoustic blues track, made it minor and turned the bridge into the hook. Recording takes with the band live brought a new bold energy – and this song is placed on the EP as a bridge to tie together the vulnerability and fierceness of the record’s seven songs. ‘Hold for Your Woman’ is about holding space and grounding for your woman or partner, in a deeper, enduring way. Embracing their dynamics, emotional depth and powerful energy without feeling threatened. It’s a call-to-action and a challenge to stay rock steady for her. She’s worth it. — Juliana Riccaradi

Shifting in different states of mind, all reflective and united in their roots, Juliana Riccardi’s upcoming sophomore EP Full Cup, due October 8, is set to be a band of color from the sounds of its singles. Following the soulful toast of the self-titled, “Full Cup,” the latest sees Riccardi in control of wants, no room for negotiating for how a woman should be accepted.
Aptly titled, “Hold for Your Woman” breaks down something so simple as “holding,” knowing its power; holding on for possession; holding a hand gently; holding on for motivation. Though it doesn’t ask for any of this — it demands for the space to be a woman.
“‘Hold for Your Woman’ is about holding space and grounding for your woman or partner, in a deeper, enduring way. Embracing their dynamics, emotional depth and powerful energy without feeling threatened,” shares Riccardi. “The attributes that make women insanely desirable are continually used against us when convenient for others. We’re labeled as weak, unstable and entrapping. These ideas describe an antiquated fear of something wildly dynamic and enduring. A powerful mind that digs deep, a heart that beats loud and bleeds easily, a soul that wants to journey. That’s a woman to me. She’s someone to hold on for.”
Led by Riccardi’s passionate grit alongside Will Hensley on guitar and pedal steel, Jeremy McDonald (bass), Nick D’Agostino (drums), and Todd Caldwell (keys, organ), the Americana warmth on the track mirrors the intimacy and dichotomy of the track—a characteristic which is part of Riccardi’s songwriting allurement. These tones of the production play sweetly against Riccardi’s backing harmonies for a complete resonance. Even with a rather bright and high sprung break mid-way, the track’s securement are sounds of the open road for the Los Angeles-based artist.
To celebrate the release of Full Cup, Riccardi and her 7-piece band will be performing at The Mint, Thursday, October 14. Tickets may be purchased here. For Covid-19 protocols for The Mint, please visit the venue’s site here.

It was Scott Raab, legendary pen-master extraordinaire for Esquire, the man’s man of all men’s magazines, who once eloquently and insightfully pointed out that “New York doesn’t bluff, fold, or bet against itself.” Neither does New York’s own Juliana Riccardi and on her latest EP entitled Full Cup, she pronounces this with the gravity of a desert winter’s first snowflake, finding the key to her own glee in shedding the hollow armature of everything she once knew as familiarity.
Riccardi comes wielding not just the resolute focus of a Shaolin warrior-monk, but a surround-sound voice that works like disinfectant graffiti on the strange undergrowth of negative self-talk that costs too many people their own star turn of color. With an archeological precision, she has bit-mapped the atlas of her scars for Full Cup, and the result is a valentine to herself as both artist and woman that has simultaneously made her that much more of both. A background in jazz performance has likewise built impressive integral crash bars around a textural vox that can travel from polyphonic chorale to attenuated rasp in half a measure of music.
The wild weather of being a woman has never been for the meek of mettle or the candied of rear. The gender that has always engendered the most derision from the tumefied tribes is one that tends to be born with an understanding that they are not the undernauts projected by those in power, but the joists holding up the very vortices of the world – whether they admit to this quiet function aloud or not. Juliana Riccardi is here not just to say it aloud, but to sing it – loud – and to showcase in the most Zen manner possible that most of what feints toward femininity in the traditional sense and the Midas touch of real female experience go together about as well as regicide and treacle.
The things that can bring women to a second class seat on the train of their own lives often do not sound like steam engines; they come in like dread tiptoeing across tightly laid bamboo flooring. As such, many women, in varying degrees of overt submission, allow themselves to be marionetted all the way to marriage with little more than a half-remorseful glance over the shoulder that has seen the least salt.
Juliana Riccardi, by contrast, nonchalantly takes a whaleboat and a harpoon out to the tossing seas of things other people don’t say about romantic relationships, bedeviling her own wounds like the ghost of a seafaring ancestor might the toppled dock crumbling from an old Cape Cod. Previous singles like “Simple” and “Life According To Plan” reveal that she is not a moguless of disenchantment, but rather an empress of unfaltering emotional realism.
Full Cup is a whip-smart call to let relationships of any kind autolyze to their proper elasticity, like dough, and this set of songs is like a pack of scented matches, each with its own reason for spontaneously striking. Songs like “Hold For Your Woman” and “Bartender” demonstrate Riccardi’s unique ability to blend self-scrutinizing lassitude with punctuated exponents of unquenchable humor, strip-mined patience, rectilinear wishing, and early exile until the mix makes any room the song is played in an instant brazier, her push-me-pull-you lyrics the resident coals – too hot for anyone else to touch or rearrange.
QRO got the happy chance to let Juliana Riccardi fill our cups, hearts, and minds with the sturdy inspirations and rococo shadows that led to the making of this record, and we can say with authority that chatting with the woman doing the pouring on Full Cup felt decadent like denim without lycra. - QRO MAGAZINE - DANA MILLER
-The soulful singer-songwriter’s new EP is a heartfelt project of reflection-
Queens native Juliana Riccardi has released her sophomore EP Full Cup — the follow up to the singer + songwriter’s debut EP Simple. The soulful country singer stepped up her game in her newest project, showcasing her ambition as an artist as well as her ability to provide reflection, honesty, and originality to each of the 7 tracks featured on the EP. Recorded at Dreamland Recording Studio, mixed by Darrel Thorp [Beck, Radiohead] and Will Hensley, and mastered by Jim Wilson — the EP, conceptualizes self-acceptance, stable relationships, and powerful femininity.
Juliana Riccardi shares about the EP, “This record is a culmination and celebration of my personal and artistic journey. Each song reveals another part of myself and underlines a pivotal moment in time that changed and challenged my character, my perspective and my power.”
Influenced by Stevie Nicks, Clearwater Revival, and Bonnie Raitt, Riccardi provides listeners with instrumentals associated with country, jazz, blues, and rock in the EP. These genres, combined with Riccardi’s soulful, yet raspy vocals, give Full Cup a well-rounded sound that guarantees enjoyment by a wide range of listeners.
The EP’s title track fittingly opens the record — making it no surprise as it played the role of the lead single before Full Cup’s release gaining wide recognition throughout the media. Originally unveiled on August 25th, it’s been featured in Spotify’s Healin’ Blues playlist and has received support from CMT, Americana Highways, and Holler. Showcasing twangs of the country genre with notes of jazz and blues, Riccardi introduces her glass half full mindset to listeners. The personal lyrics harp on self-love and acceptance, provide a feel-good vibe that will get you nodding along to the soulful vibe.
“In My Soul” continues us through the EP, leading us on an honest journey with this raw piece focused on starting anew and pursuing one’s hopes and desires. Riccardi’s insightful lyrics inspire all those who listen to reflect on their own current situation and their inner desires. You’ll quickly find yourself getting lost in the moment — deep within your soul — thanks to the soft country tune that encompasses this piece.
Previously release, “Hold For Your Woman” marks a stunning milestone for Full Cup. Consisting of a strong beat, as intensified rasp from Riccardi, and a beautiful array of instrumentals — Riccardi sends a clear challenge to the ‘you’ of the piece: to be able to handle a strong, powerful, and confident woman, such as Riccardi herself, without being intimidated.
Tucked in the middle,“Wire,” offers up perspective in the form of taking an honest look into the challenges of a relationship without a strong foundation. The lyrics get personal as Riccardi presents the strength in letting go of a toxic relationship while the melody provides a unique rock vibe not found in other tracks. “Bartender” continues the self reflection as it takes a look at various conversations that patrons of an unnamed bar have with the bartender. This piece consists of a strong beat, with a large harmonica presence and light content, giving a blues vibe to the song.
As we near the end of this EP, “Beam By Beam,” provides a break from the strong beat of the previous songs by offering a softer tune. In this track, Riccardi acknowledges the importance of stability in a relationship, highlighted in lyrics that express her dislike of the weak foundations in her past relationships. In addition, she discusses the fact that her needs were not met in those relationships. Riccardi’s Full Cup ends with the emotional and realistic “Mad.” With lyrics that address the difficulties of relationships, this honest piece showcases Riccardi’s beautiful and soulful voice.
