"What I do is make a lot of creative songs and things and take people’s minds to other places and not the same old struggle that everyone lives in. And the name itself kind of takes you there and I felt like it embraces that whole fictional, dramatical, supernatural world that only a Grimnasty can understand.

Drivers shouldn’t worry if they have an “I don’t get it” moment when looking up at images on billboards from Austin’s Reagan Outdoor Advertising in the coming weeks. Rather than advertisements, 10 of the company’s signs feature the work of Austin artists selected as winners of its third Austin Art Boards contest — and the attention is helping some artists make money.
The winning images were selected from more than 320 entries in this year’s contest and will be rotated around Reagan’s signs that are idle.
Billy Reagan, president of Reagan Outdoor, said the company is frequently solicited to donate space on some of its 800 billboards in the Austin area. The idea of Art Boards was a way to use that space in a distinctly Austin way, he added.
“We wanted to engage in an endeavor that supports our community, and we thought this was a great way to showcase what Austin has,” he said. “People will often make a comment that they can’t figure out what the ad on a particular sign is or what it’s promoting, and then I tell them what we’re doing with Art Boards.”
Winning images in the competition stay in rotation for as long as the physical sign poster material they are printed on stays usable.
Adam Owen, Reagan’s creative director and the supervisor of Art Boards, said some images from the first class of winners in 2011 are still visible on signs around Austin, though they’re likely faded and well worn around the edges.
Owen said the visibility of the work has been a benefit to the artists, who are a mix of full-time painters and photographers as well as part-timers who treat art as a hobby in addition to their careers in other fields.
“There have been a few that have talked about it helping, because in Google searching their (Art Boards) images will come up, and a handful of people have gotten commissions for projects from someone seeing their work on a billboard,” Owen said. - Austin Business Journal
