"JazzFest 28 celebrated in Style"

The Hot Springs Jazz Society didn’t leave one note untouched, as it celebrated its 28th year with festivities Aug. 23 through Sept. 1.
The merriment kicked off Friday, Aug. 23, at the Bathhouse Dinner Theatre with the Clyde Pound Trio. Pound is the director of the festival and noted pianist for many celebrities, including Frank Sinatra. Also onstage was the Spa City Stompers.
The Ohio Club hosted Jazz Night Thursday, Aug. 29, with retired U.S. Air Force Airmen of Note trumpet soloist Tim Leahey.
The Classical and Jazz Blow Out dinner and performance Friday, Aug. 30, at Bathhouse Dinner Theatre was host to many performers including Hot Springs Village’s own Voices Rising along with Ken Goodman as master of ceremonies.
There was a well attended Block Party Saturday, Aug. 31, downtown on Broadway Street. Performers included The Steve Hudleson Trio, 106th Army Band Jazz Ensemble, Tenor Madness, Arkansas High School Jazz Band, University Arkansas in Monticello, Frog Squad from Memphis, Tennessee, and the Arkansas All-Star Big Band.
Sunday, Sept. 1, the jazzy celebration closed at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church for the annual St. Luke’s Jazz Mass. A special festival program ended events at The Vapors Nightclub with the Stateline Avenue Band.

"Jazz Society's JazzFest Block Party! set for Saturday"

The 28th Hot Springs JazzFest's free outdoor concert is getting a new name, JazzFest Block Party!, to go with the atmosphere of this traditional concert presented each year by the Jazz Society.
"Block Party gives a better feel of the day, a party in the street with great music and a whole lot of fun," Entertainment Chairman Clyde Pound said in a news release.
Pound has been producing the music of the JazzFest for 17 years, "so when he suggested Dona Pettey as emcee of the JazzFest Block Party! it was unanimously agreed as a perfect fit," the release said.
Pettey, a Hot Springs native, has been in the music business for 35 years. In 2018, Pettey was named queen of the First Ever 16th Annual World's Shortest St. Patrick's Day Parade.
"Many will recognize her as the lead singer of the Ohio Club Players, performing regularly at the Ohio Club owned by her husband of five years, Mike Pettey. Ms. Pettey has been performing at the Ohio Club for nine years, considering herself a 'fixture.' However, those fortunate to see her perform, and experience firsthand the draw of her charm, consider her a highlight of Hot Spring's night life," the release said.
The Jazz Society's JazzFest Block Party! will take place from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday on the 200 block of Broadway Street under the skybridge.
Performing on two stages will be the Steve Hudleson Trio, 106th Army Band Jazz Ensemble, Tenor Madness (featuring four saxophones), Arkansas High School Jazz Band, University of Arkansas in Monticello jazz band, Frog Squad (psychedelic jazz and more), Arkansas All-Star Big Band (official Arkansas band for Doc Severinsen) and a Block Party Jam featuring musicians from throughout the day.
Lawn chairs are recommended, as seating is limited, but there will be ample shade. Food vendors will be on hand for lunch or early dinner as well as a beer tent whose proceeds go toward presenting this free daylong concert.
The 2019 JazzFest kicked off on Aug. 23 with the Spa City Stompers at the Hot Springs Bathhouse Dinner Theater and continues Thursday through Sunday.
Other concerts scheduled are Jazz Night at The Ohio Club, Classical & Jazz Blow Out, a special smooth jazz concert on Sunday and St. Luke's Jazz Mass. Tickets to attend JazzFest concerts range from free to $55.
Information on the JazzFest can be found at HSJazzSociety.org, by calling 501-627-2425 or emailing HSJazzFest@gmail.com. - The Sentinel Record

Bio

Frog Squad is an outlet for creative expression and sound exploration based in Memphis, TN. Their songs pull heavily on improvisation within loose structures, creating a psychedelic, avant-garde, jazz sound.

The group curates and arranges songs from artists such as Theloious Monk, Erik Satie, and Horace Silver, and bandleader David Collins composes eclectic, orginial music. Overall, Frog Squad gently defies the standards of what defines “good music” by composing song templates with experimental elements. Frog Squad currently releases a new live recording every 4 months. Notable performances include The Hot Springs Jazz Fest, A Tribute to Memphis Jazz, Hot Water Hills Festival, Benjamin L. Hooks' 'Front Porch Music Series', and an opening slot for Bobby Sparks. In 2019, members David Collins and Khari Wynn were asked to compose and perform music as part of the Memphis Urban Arts Commissions 'Revisiting Series'. The performance was recorded and will be released in the fall of 2019.
