Summary

The 36th annual Winnipeg Folk Festival is July 9th – 12th, 2009 in Birds Hill Provincial Park, Manitoba. The program consists of approximately 75 artists from around the globe who perform electric and acoustic folk, blues, "world", traditional, bluegrass, Celtic, roots, alt-country, and more. Past years performers include Randy Newman, Indigo Girls, Ray Davies, Emmylou Harris, Calexico, Robert Randolph & the Family Band, Corb Lund & the Hurtin’ Albertans, Michael Franti & Spearhead, The Weakerthans, Seun Kuti, Justin Townes Earle, Kathleen Edwards, Los Lobos and Cat Empire to name a few.

The festival draws around 45,000 per year. There is compensation for all artists who perform, which will vary from act to act based on the artist’s stature and draw. All artist fees will be negotiated prior to the festival. Artists are expected to perform at least one concert and take part in performance workshops.

The festival is music but much more. The festival presents children’s and family entertainment during the daytime, and “alternative” programming (anything from circus acts, and film to “alternative to folk” bands, dance troupes and DJs) in the evenings.

Both emerging artists and established, touring acts are encouraged to submit.
