In January, as many recording artists talk about their new projects all over social media, Danae provides her fans with very little details. Because of this, her silence gains more attention than others shouting “buy my album now!”

Danae speaks ahead of her new single LEMON SQUEEZE
Here at Gritty Vibes, we love to see that moment when an artist is turning the corner and truly coming into their own creatively. This is a vibe we picked up while watching Danae’s recent Tik Tok video in which she manifested that this year, her music will take off. The promo video pulled in thousands of comments and views, in a way affirming Danae’s predictions. On March 2nd, she’ll continue that momentum with a brand new single entitled “LEMON SQUEEZE”.
Danae’s sound has a therapeutic element to it, as her knack for melody, word play and vocal range are on display in songs like Toy Story, and one of our favorites – Norah Jones. Her catalogue is equal parts style and substance with lyrics that are often vulnerable and personal, amidst a melody that’s just so damn catchy.

In LEMON SQUEEZE, which features CRACK63x, the up and coming Neo Soul Artist showcases her versatility by rapping for the first time on a track. The release, which can be pre saved here will be followed by a visual which drops on March 18th. Danae’s 2021 productivity has a lot more in store after that, and she hinted at more releases and collaborations coming in the future.
As she prepares to roll out her latest track, we had a chance to speak to Danae about the exciting things planned ahead. We discussed the inspirations that helped lay the foundation for her as an artist, her recent viral moment, and her manifestations about 2021 being the year that her music career takes off. Judging by the work that she’s putting out, Gritty Vibes agrees with that last statement 100%.
1. Let’s start from the beginning, can you tell us a bit about where you’re from and your early artistic inspirations that helped you become the musician you are today?
So my name is Danae (said like the word deny). I was born in Wisconsin, lived in 8 other states, but was technically raised in Culpeper, Virginia. It’s literally in the middle of nowhere and because I wasn’t really from the area, I didn’t have a too many friends growing up. I started singing when I was 3 and started writing music when I was 7 or 8. I was raised in church so gospel music has definitely been an inspiration. As well as jazz and singers like Sade, Norah Jones and Erykah Badu. My name (Danae Alexandrea) actually comes from a Jazz Radio DJ from Chicago by the name of Danae Alexander.
2. The collective that you’re apart of is dope. How did OFFCOLORS come together?
I’ve actually known Tommy for a long time now. We both started at a private college for music back in 2015, and we instantly clicked and started writing music together off rip. We recorded my first single together (we definitely evolved in our music since then, haha) and we were always in each other’s live shows when we started off as independent artists. Then a couple years after we both left the school, I just thought It would be awesome to start a group with him! So we talked about It for maybe three seconds, thought of a name and then OFFCOLORS was born! Our name actually comes from Steven Universe about a group of gems who aren’t made “the right way” and are exiled to live underground. We have an EP out but we’re working on another project as we speak!
3. Off of the melody alone from your teaser on IG, I can tell Lemon Squeeze is a bop. What should listeners expect when this drops?
LEMON SQUEEZE is definitely gonna be different than most of the music I’ve previously put out. I finally got the guts to rap in a song and I’m honestly shocked at how good it sounds. I also love this song because you can definitely hear how care-free and confident I’ve been feeling. It’s definitely a song for all my bad bitches. People just need to learn how to get used to us.

“LITERALLY EVER SINCE THIS YEAR STARTED, THERE’S A VOICE INSIDE MY HEAD THAT JUST POPS UP OUT OF NOWHERE AND SAYS THINGS LIKE ‘WON’T BE LONG NOW,’ ‘THIS IS YOUR YEAR,’ “
4. Your recent TikTok went crazy and your song Grenades picked up a lot of momentum. How did it feel to see such a positive response to your music?
So I’ve gone viral multiple times prior to this video but this is the first time my music reached a big audience in such a short amount of time. Seeing my comments go from 5 to 1500 in a day about how powerful my song is was CRAZY. At one point I called my best friend in tears because I didn’t even know what to do. I’m still really shocked It even happened. Doesn’t even feel like real life.
5. You mentioned this being the year that you’d like to quit your jobs and commit to the music. We love that manifestation. What is it about 2021 for you that feels like the year to make it happen?
Literally ever since this year started, there’s a voice inside my head that just pops up out of nowhere and says things like “won’t be long now,” “this is your year,” “and these jobs you’re working are only temporary” and I definitely feel like that’s my guides and angels speaking to me because i have NEVER felt this confident in myself and in my music. I’m definitely ready for what is coming next in this stage of my life, but I’m also trying to keep myself patient and most of all humble.
6. For those who are new to you and your music, what’s one thing we should know about Danae Simone?
One thing you guys should know about me is that although a lot of people view me as someone who doesn’t care about much (queen of resting b**** face), a lot of emotion is seen through my music. I’ve never really been good with words (especially in interviews) but I promise you’ll start to get to know me just by listening to the words I sing.
“I FINALLY GOT THE GUTS TO RAP IN A SONG AND I’M HONESTLY SHOCKED AT HOW GOOD IT SOUNDS. I ALSO LOVE THIS SONG BECAUSE YOU CAN DEFINITELY HEAR HOW CARE-FREE AND CONFIDENT I’VE BEEN FEELING.”
7. Anything else you’d like to add?
I have a lot of new music coming out this year. I recently just started making my own beats and collabing with a lot of talented up and coming artists and I need y’all to keep a look out for all of us!!! I’m elevating and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. - Gritty Vibes
