Listen to Concord America's EP "Suns Out Guns Out" here. - Madhouse Management
It’s no wonder Concord America is so much fun. The rowdy and restless Atlanta rock trio traces its origins to a Toys “R” Us. Bassist John Restivo and singer/guitarist Ben Presley met while working at the chain retailer where nobody wants to grow up. John’s brother Vinny, who confesses he “couldn’t sell an ottoman to save my f#!cking life,” worked at the furniture store next door. Ben and John started out rivals, but became friends during lunch-break hangouts.
“We started riding bikes through the aisles, and our managers didn’t like that very much,” John recalls. “We were having little drag races around the store. They put an end to that pretty fast, and we spent more time playing guitars and less time f#!king around in the bike aisle.”
But that’s not the story that always gets reported. In December, the Charleston City Paper claimed that Ben and John worked at a pizza parlor. Presley isn’t surprised by the confusion.
“We’ve told a few stories in our lives,” he laughs. “I don’t know.”
Racing bikes through a toy store and playing fast and loose with the truth are both befitting of Suns Out Guns Out, the raucous garage-punk platter Concord America unleashed last spring. Spanning just seven songs and 18 minutes, the EP gleefully smashes through a variety of frenzied ideas:
“Howlin’ at the Moon” bloodies Ty Segall’s tuneful songcraft with bruising punk propulsion. “So Gay” overdoes Nick Cave’s swarmy swagger with druggy aggression; fierce riffs and a sneering “Oh yeah-yeah” chorus fuel the song’s brutally sarcastic come-ons — “I wanna love you / But you think I’m so gay!” The title track targets the party-hardy vibe of hometown peers The Black Lips, pounding riffs and loopy blues licks sending Presley’s plea for alcoholic excess spiraling to the brink of chaos.
Since the 2013 release of its LP debut, Shag Nasty, Concord America has toured hard, staying on the road for four months last year. The time away from Atlanta spurs the trio’s relentless creativity.
“You’re not playing to your hometown audience that has heard your music,” Presley says. “It’s all fresh ears, so you get to see what does and doesn’t work. And you get to play with so many bands, you get to glean a little bit from what everybody else is doing.”
Commercially, Suns Out Guns Out hasn’t exactly been a breakthrough, but it’s garnered attention. Spin.com premiered the title track, calling it “two minutes of guitar snarls, rallying the mosh pit with the hook.” A succession of other outlets followed suit, momentum stoked by the trio’s commitment to touring. For Columbia’s Post-Echo, Concord America’s mostly experimental label, this success has energized its other efforts.
“We did want to have a fulcrum point, where there was a band out there that could tour all the time that did have buzz,” offers co-owner Franklin Jones. “That kind of stuff is contagious, not just for the label but for the other artists. [Post-Echo signee Dear Blanca] and Concord did short runs last summer, and both of those bands love each other.”
Concord America is excited to keep going. The guys recently spent a week in the Georgia mountains recording a new LP. But all the recent admiration hasn’t made them rich. They’re still struggling along, scraping by from town to town.
“It definitely gets a little hairy,” John admits. “We went from Buffalo to Boston, and when we rolled into Boston, we only had like $7 left. And we had to get to New York the next day. We were like, ‘We really hope we sell some T-shirts tonight.’” - Free Times

Thursday night’s frigid conditions were nary enough to detract showgoers from paying a visit to the Elberta Mansion, the venerable South Nashville house venue that’s been throwing shows for several years now. The Spin arrived shortly after the first act, a last-minute addition to the bill from Saratosa, Fla., called Teach Me Equals. While we didn’t manage to catch any of their live act, we kept hearing their name brought up throughout the rest of the night — a good indication that they impressed the youngish crowd of local rock 'n' rollers.
Second up for the night was Gunther Doug. The trio — which happens to be made up of Elberta Mansion residents — has only played a handful of local shows in the past several months. They’re gearing to hit the road with Atlanta’s Concord America, and Thursday night served as the official kickoff to their 10-show tour. It was The Spin’s first rendezvous with Gunther Doug live, and what a lively one it proved to be. Playing in for a familiar crowd of friends and regulars, Gunther Doug was fully in their element, powering through opener “Already There” from last year’s self-titled EP at a breakneck pace before tearing into the rest of the set. The sometimes no wave-y garage-surf three-piece has some angular tunes and a lot of versatility, and they put both on full display. Though there wasn't as much moshing as we see at a lot of house shows, there was plenty of foot-stomping, hooting and hollering as GD kept things loose, fast and jangly.
Co-headliners Concord America served as a great follow-up to Gunther Doug’s eccentric set. Keeping the good vibes going, they played songs from this year’s EP Suns Out, Guns Out, as well as last year’s Shag Nasty. Sonically, the trio achieves a fine balance of everything The Spin loves about rock 'n' roll: classic power-pop vocals about beer and impending death landed alongside sleazy pop-punk guitars — kind of Ramones-y. The slacker rockers were able to take their fast, heavy sound in any direction without losing the pop veneer that holds it all together, resulting in some populist punk that’s prime for partying. (Try saying that five times fast.)
After Concord America, we mingled in the backyard, huddling around the fire and our fellow party patrons for warmth. As the show began to roll on into the wee hours, we noticed some attendees deciding to call it a night.
But there was still a healthy crowd remaining for Western Medication and King Bitch. Western Medication played one of the tightest sets we’ve seen from them to date. Cuts including “Reflections of the Sun” and other older material kept the energy up late through the night. King Bitch — the project fronted by Diarrhea Planet drummer Casey Weissbuch — wrapped things up after a quick changeover between sets. KB debuted some new material with a new five-piece lineup that now includes Alex Benick of Fox Fun. With the additional guitar, King Bitch sounded heavier than usual, keeping the night’s theme of unconventional heavy vibes going.
All in all, it was a zany affair: five complementary but markedly different rock acts. But isn't that why we call it Music City? - The Nashville Scene
A Hotlanta psych group of three, Concord America released debut LP Shag Nasty on July 30. The band came to be because the guys were working at the same anything-goes type of pizza parlor. We are proud to premiere the video for “Kids” today on magnetmagazine.com. Watch it below. - Magnet Magazine
Straight outta Chamblee, Georgia, here’s the premiere of the ragged, buzzing new single from garage-surf-grunge-punk trio Concord America. The band, which consists of brothers John and Vinny Restivo on drums and bass and Ben “Dix” Presley on vocals and guitar, will officially release its debut LP, Shag Nasty, on July 16 (the record has been available at shows for months). “Low Beat” is a blasting jolt of fuzz-heavy rock and roll goodness that chews up some of the best sounds the ’90s had to offer and spits it out into something fervid and deliriously catchy. The trio tracked everything live in their basement and, although the vibe here is definitely raw, lo-fi and loose, it never comes across as sloppy or off-the-cuff. In short: these boys can kick out some serious jams and you should really give “Low Beat” a listen below. - Latest Disgrace
This opening riff has been throwing me off. I keep thinking I’m headed for a double-barrelled gut shot of a heavy groove, but instead it’s a fuzzed-out psych rock jam that’s easy on the ears. It’s not a bad thing at all, just a little bit of a fake out for a band that’s been known to churn out a grungey crusher or two. But that’s neither here or there. Despite releasing a video for their single “Pity Party” in 2012, “Kids” is, for all intents and purposes, Concord America’s visual introduction to the world, and they’re doing their camera-mugging best to make it count. The emphasis here is on energy and enthusiasm—lots of rapid-fire cuts and shots of the band goofing around and cutting up in front of the lens. It’s bouncy and fun; in other words, it’s exactly what you’d expect from a young trio who look and sound like they’re having the time of their lives. Oh, and bonus points for the Turf War tee. - Latest Disgrace
44. CONCORD AMERICA – “LOW BEAT”
// FROM THE ALBUM SHAG NASTY - Latest Disgrace
Based out of Atlanta, Concord America is a trio consisting of brothers John and Vinny Restivo and friend Ben Presley. Claiming influences like Black Lips, Pixies and Cage The Elephant, the group formed around their mutual love for Rock & Roll but found their unique sound in areas ranging from classic Garage and late-50′s Doo-Wop all the way to Proto Grunge, Power-Pop and the modern Surf Revival.
The Restivo brothers were a natural rhythm section from the start. “John was already drumming and put the idea in my head to play bass,” says Vinny. Until the three met at their job in a seedy pizza joint, the teen brothers were playing in the bands you might expect to find in suburban garages across America. “What really made us want to start a band with Ben,” John says, “is that we saw him get past security at a Cage the Elephant show. He jumped on stage during “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” in short shorts, suspenders, combat boots and a sailor hat and did a stage dive.” Guitarist and singer Ben Presley seemed to be just the catalyst John and Vinny needed. In 2013, Concord America released their debut LP, Shag Nasty- a blistering lo-fi rock record that solidified the dynamic between Presley and the Restivo brothers.
Today, the band is announcing their forthcoming EP, Suns Out Guns Out, and sharing its title track. The first single is a perfect distillation of the what listeners can expect from the EP when it is released on May 27 via Post-Echo. Speaking about the track, SPIN writes, “the boys blister their hands even faster over nearly two minutes of guitar snarls, rallying the mosh pit with the hook, ‘Don’t worry about the future ’cause we’re all gonna die / Let’s drink the night away.’ Cheers to that.” Check out the track and all EP info below.

Brothers, John and Vinny Restivo met Ben Presley while working at an Atlanta, Georgia pizza kitchen but later on, while attending a Cage The Elephant concert, the three would decide to become a band and so became Concord America.
Concord America spits out ragging fuzzy psychedelic garage-rock reminiscent of early Arctic Monkeys only a little louder and a little dirtier.
"Suns Out Guns Out" is the first single to their latest EP under the same name which will hit the shelves in May via Post Echo Records. Concord America will release their EP Suns Out Guns Out on May 27th via Post-Echo. The trio is based out of Atlanta and released the title track of the EP, which you can stream below. It’s the type of high energy garage rock that takes influence from the genre’s earlier days and doesn’t waste any time with intros or interludes. If the title track is anything to go by, these guys are going to have plenty of great hooks so I’m definitely looking forward to hearing the rest. Additional details are below.

"Suns Out Guns Out" - Concord America
Birthed around a shady pizza place and an “Ain’t No Rest For the Wicked” stage dive, Concord America is as dirt-stained, scuzzy, and out of fucks to give as those glamorous origins would suggest.
The Atlanta trio spat out first full-length Shag Nasty last year, and now the three follow it with the EP Suns Out Guns Out. The title track is a mess of writhing limbs and abused guitar strings, furious and wild just because it can be. It’s a fiery two minute entry into the storied history of bands telling us to get with the shit-kicking because it’s all fucked anyways, man, and it’s fun as hell.

Suns Out Guns Out - Nothing Sounds Better
Atlanta based outfit Concord America will immediately have you take note of their music from the second you hit play on this sweet track below. Yes, “Suns Out Guns Out”, will shake you to attention if you’ve been napping recently and give you a solid injection of rock n roll into your system. The band can offer just more than punk here though, as the track meshes some nice swing/doo-wop sounds into their brand of punk rock. I’d say that the style is working out well for these guys.
Fans should pick up new EP, Suns Out Guns Out, due May 27th on Post-Echo. - Austin Town Hall

A couple of locals are tearing it up on Spin this week. Concord America is an energetic trio out of Atlanta, and they’ve recently released the first single from their follow up to last year’s “Shag Nasty”. “Suns Out Guns Out” is right at that edge where indie and punk seem to come together, led by distorted guitars with a touch of cynical lyrics. Concord America have officially announced Suns Out Guns Out, the follow-up album to last year’s stellar Shag Nasty. Set to drop May 27, be sure to stay tuned for more Suns Out Guns Out news and other related mayhem in the weeks ahead, including new tour info.

The members of Atlanta trio Concord America met while working at the same pizza joint, but it wasn’t until brothers John and Vinny Restivo saw Ben Presley stage-dive at a Cage the Elephant show that they wanted to start a band. Now, as Concord America, the band kicks the shit out of their amps with Presley's rampaging riffs and throat-curdling yells, and the Restivos’ tag-teamed drums and bass. "Suns Out Guns Out" is the first listen off Concord America's latest EP by the same name, which is due out this year as a follow-up to last year's excellently named Shag Nasty. It’s a little more polished this time around, but don't let that fool you: If anything, the boys blister their hands even faster over nearly two minutes of guitar snarls, rallying the mosh pit with the hook, "Don't worry about the future 'cause we’re all gonna die / Let's drink the night away." Cheers to that. - SPIN

Based out of Atlanta, Concord America is a trio made of up brothers John and Vinny Restivo and friend Ben Presley. Claiming influences like Black Lips, Pixies and Cage The Elephant, the group formed around their mutual love for Rock & Roll but found their unique sound in areas ranging from classic Garage and late-50’s Doo-Wop all the way to Proto Grunge, Power-Pop and the modern Surf Revival.
The Restivo brothers were a natural rhythm section from the start. “John was already drumming and put the idea in my head to play bass,” says Vinny. He jumped on stage during “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” in short shorts, suspenders, combat boots and a sailor hat and did a stage dive.” Guitarist and singer Ben Presley seemed to be just the catalyst John and Vinny needed to begin their band.
Early 2013, Concord America took a week away to produce their debut LP, Shag Nasty, with engineer friend Trey Rosenkamppf in the basement of their home. The band tracked everything live in one room. Shag Nasty is a charming, lo-fi rock record that expresses the dynamic between Presley and the Restivo brothers. “The record is a little loose,” Ben says, “but that’s how it’s supposed to be heard.” The LP found itself dwelling somewhere in the Beach-Punk genre but still manages to keep some of that Pixies-style Rock & Roll.
On May 27, 2014, Concord America released their EP ‘Suns Out Guns Out’ via Post-Echo and re-released it via limited edition cassette via Wiener Records on September 26, 2013. The band journeyed to a cabin out in the woods where they cut the 8 track EP in only 4 days. “We did a lot of swimming while recording this one,” says John.
Now the band has finished writing and recording their forethcoming LP, which is slated for a Summer 2015 release. They are currently touring in support of their recent EP and the much anticipated LP.
