Bio
In Venezuela, a BULULÚ is a buzzing party, a lively crowd, a gathering that generates excitement. It only takes a minute listening to BULULÚ to understand why they’ve claimed the moniker as their own.
Led by Venezuelan-born percussionist, composer and vocalist Lali Mejia, the nine-piece combo draws on folkloric styles from Venezuelan, Colombian, Dominican, Cuban and other Caribbean cultures. With Guatemalan-American bassist Ayla Davila serving as music director, the ensemble delivers infectiously grooving and insistently celebratory performances. Reflecting the vibrant tapestry that makes up the Bay Area’s Latin music scene, Bululú features a stellar cast of highly seasoned players, including Dominican vocalist Sofia Magdalena, Salvadorean-American pianist Ruthie Dineen, Grammy-Award Winning Venezuelan percussionist/vocalist Omar Ledezma Jr., string expert Kai Lyons, American trombonist Mara Fox, Cuban-born trombonist Dayron Calderon, and Venezuelan vocalist Norma Kansau.
BULULÚ's performances encompass an exciting mix of styles, all originals, ranging from calypso and salsa to cumbia, son, guaracha, merengue, bachata, and more. BULULÚ stands out not only for its rich musical diversity but also for its inclusive identity, embracing the LGBTQ+ community, and a majority of female band members.
