If you missed this show, too bad for you. The blend of voices and instruments was delightful. The sound guy had everyone audible and even. At soaring moments, I swear I heard colors. The band was having a good time and it spilled out into the crowd. These folks really like each other. Guitars, drums, keyboard, big upright bass, mandolin and fiddle, Oh yeah, and the lyrics, with the voices delivering them. I haven't heard the CD I bought yet, but I would very much like to buy a recording of tonight's performance. The way the fiddle and mandolin were fooling around, alone and with each other, had me grinning more than once. I was dancing in my seat a couple of times and the only way I would have enjoyed myself more would have been, to have been dancing. But then, I would have missed the lyrics. Storytelling to music. Melanie Morgan's music is coffeehouse style folk with a european angle, a mixture of Joan Baez and Nico.
She grew up in a small town in Germany. In 1995 she moved with her Jamaican husband to the United States and in 2001 they decided to make Athens their hometown and raise their two children there. Enjoying everything Athens had to offer as a music town, seven years later Melanie decided to pick up her daughter's unused guitar and fell in love with the instrument. She started teaching herself, then moved on to take guitar lessons, playing with neighbors and eventually, much to her own surprise started writing her own songs. She writes about anything that comes to her mind and her songs range from social injustice to the next shopping dilemma. Mostly she plays with a band called Between Naybors, but sometimes you can see her braving the stage by herself.
