" TORONTO, Aug. 21 /CNW/ - The first annual "CraveFest" International Music Video Awards Night invaded The Mod Club in Toronto on Friday, August 17, 2007
with a packed house, creating a successful event. Hosted by solo artist Tara Slone, the evening featured live performances by illScarlett, Roz Bell, Solitair, The Scenario, Tricky Bizzniss and HandHeld. Amongst the award presenters were CraveFest judges Alan Cross, Tanya Dennis, Ulysses Terrero and Farley Flex via video.

Hätte sich Gwen Stephani mal mit den richtigen Produzenten zusammen getan, würden wir sie heute nicht nur noch für ihre herausragende Präsenz und ihren Richard-X Remix von 'Cool' mögen. Vielleicht hätte sie sich sogar die Strike Boys raussuchen sollen, denn was die hier mit Cyrena Dunbar unter dem Pseudonym 'Wrongkong' veranstalten, kann sich sehen lassen.
Electro-Rock mal wieder so, wie man ihn sich wünscht: facettenreich arrangiert, mit ungewöhnlichen Wendungen und trotz der streckenweise dance-lastigen Exkurse sehr glaubhaft dargeboten. Gedanken beim Durchören: 'Die klingen wie Garbage; nein doch eher wie die Cardigans; der Gwen Stephani Vergleich ist doch gar nicht so schlecht; *hhm* Miss Kittin; oh, da sing ja noch ein Kerl mit; Roisin Murphy; Portishead...'. Einigen wir darauf: die klingen wie Wrongkong und Wrongkong klingen gut! Aus obigen Referenzen lässt sich ableiten, dass die Stimme von Mrs. Dunbar vielschichtig einsetzbar ist und sowohl Charakter als auch technische Versiertheit aufweist. Einen Support-Slot bei Kosheen hat man auch schon wahrgenommen, und das durchaus passenderweise. So kracht es gleich am Anfang mit 'In This Moment' trotz beschaulichem Intro und Zwischenteil, während es im Duo bei 'Ohh Good', 'Better' oder der Ballade 'Wide Open' geradeaus alternativ weitergeht. Weinerlicher Bristol-Sound in 'The Silence Of Your Present Dream' wird abgelöst von einer chemical-beat Struktur in 'Catch Up' oder der electro-stomp in 'Quality Retriever'. Bei Wrongkong liegt in der Abwechslung die Kraft.
Das Vorurteil, dass man deutsche Produktionen sofort erkennen und heruntermachen kann wird hier eindrucksvoll widerlegt. Die Strike Boys und Cyrena Dunbar, das ist ungefähr so, wie Erdbeeren mit grünem Pfeffer. Zutaten die man sich zusammen zunächst nicht vorstellen kann, die in der Kombination jedoch vom Style wie auch geschmacklich was hermachen. - Ralf - www.medienkonverter.de

The Canadian-German band Wrongkong is releasing their third album on April 4th. Meanwhile, the release of their sophomore album, “So electric”, is a mere 15 months ago. What happened? An attempt to explain:
Is it the trained dancer and singer Cyrena Dunbar, who once shared the field with Feist as part of the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary, lives in Germany since 13 years, and works as a singer and artist?
Is it the musical head, songwriter, and producer, Thomas Wurm aka Tommy Yamaha, who’s act The Strike Boys released as the first, and until now, only German act under Britain’s cult-label Wall of Sound (Zoot Woman, Tiga, I Am Kloot, Cosmo Jarvis)?
Is it the band, which can’t keep their creative fingers from their instruments, and wants to top off that which is already lived?
Or is it all of the above, and much more?
It’s clear that „So Electric“ has left a lasting impression, with strong praise from the press, a later album release in the USA (Minty Fresh, September 2012) to compliment a TV-spot for a large car company, the honor of the „Kulturförderpreis“ (culture sponsorship award) by the City of Nuremberg, and celebration of such at Waves Vienna Festival.
Directly after their album-release-tour in early 2012, Wrongkong was back in the studio, to make best use of the tight Wrongkong sound and all the impressions from their travels. The artistic output is immense, and “Kill The Should And Make A Do“ is the result of the creative process that followed.
Based on a typical basic instrumentation of bass, drums, and piano, 11 songs emerged, which thread together in a fascinating and divers vision of pop music.
Immediately with the opener „Escape“, the listener is captured in mid-air of the Wrongkong-cosmos. The vocals from singer Cyrena Dunbar skip over pulsating synth-melodies, with a vessel of warm bass and piano sounds.
The disco-pop hymn „See It Coming“ and the single which makes a simultaneous debut with the album „Did You Say Dream On“, both being reminiscent to the New Yorker indietronic scene, or „I’m Sorry“, originally written for the previous album, yet not released, gave the backbone and direction for „Kill The Should And Make A Do” and show the measure of diversity in the band. Xylophones, violin, or trumpets played by Gabor Bertholini (Golden Kanine, The Great Berholinis), completed the production.
Thomas Wurm is especially fond of „Running Away“ and „Stay“, in the last third of the album; „ There was a magical moment during writing and recording that only musicians know about, and probably because they are both pieces that we somehow were always searching for, but never found.“.
Although the album is actually finished, the band crafted a final jewel for the crown, and recorded a reprise of „Hands Up High“, which is already present as an electronic version on „So Electric“.
Wrongkong have found themselves. And they have an idea that is vividly and consequently worked through. The result is their third album „Kill The Should And Make A Do”, in which they have poured a love and strength into, which you can feel every second the music, made by the band, plays.
