WOMEN IN DOCS
Red Wine And Postcards (MGM)
Why Brisbane’s Women In Docs aren’t garnering as much attention as the likes of The Waifs, Clare Bowditch or even Missy Higgins is beyond me. I mean really, their country-tinged folk-pop sounds featured on this sophomore effort are just as accessible as these artists, if not more so. With the ‘Finger’s Darren Middleton at the
production helm, Chanel Lucas and Roz Pappalardo have captured an uplifting vibe and a genuine sense of realism and humour that normally sparks their live show.
With “travel logs” written from China to Melbourne and everywhere in between, it’s the likes of ‘Breathe’, ‘Brunswick Street’ and the fiddle-friendly ‘Sail Away’ that grab. However it’s ‘Ordinary Day’ that radio really should be jumping all over.

Roz Pappalardo and Chanel Lucas have traversed the national touring circuit for eight years, and taken their Australian-and-proud accents across the world. With Darren Middleton on board as producer, second album Red Wine and Postcards is a solid addition to their musical heritage: songs like the fiddle-infused "Sail Away" are sure-fire barn pleasers. Despite its strength, the set doesn't live up to a Docs live show. It took the Waifs three albums and a tune called 'London Still' for the trio to rule the radio: perhaps a song like "Ordinary Day" can do the same for the Brisbane duo. Their earthy vibe and strong voices deserve the attention.

Life does seem to be one long round of imbibing and touring for North Queensland-reared, Brisbane-based duo women in docs. References to boozing and travelling abound throughout Red Wine & Postcards: quaffing tequila in smoky cities where "you can't see the hills for the layers of human filth", "drinking 'til sunrise" in Sydney, melancholic evenings in Melbourne, wintry walks in New York's Central Park, and so on. From Cairns to China, Texas to Townsville, Chanel Lucas and Roz Pappalardo have certainly paid their dues in the past few years. Their earnest endeavour is starting to yield significant dividends. If the pair's songwriting stills seems a tad stereotyped, at least lyrically, the other facets of their act show a marked advance. The hallmark harmonis that stamp them as an antipodean equivalent of Indigo Girls soar to new heights on this second album. And there's a greater awareness of arrangement and sense of dynamics, no doubt courtesy of their producer, Powderfinger guitarist Darren Middlton.

Helped along by some rollicking percussion, sweeping strings and the ever-present Silas Palmer, "Red Wine & Postcards" sparkles with perfectly formed gems of country-tinged folk. Reprising the catchy melodies and sweet harmonies of "Under a Different Sky", Queensland's hardest working folk duo appear to have hit on a winning formulae. Produced very capably by Darren Middleton (powderfinger / drag), "Red Wine & Postcards" plays to the groups strengths, presenting simple, well crafted songs with a modicum of frills. The lack of variety may be off putting butif it ain't broke I'd suggest you buy the album.
