The carnage ensued most vigorously when Where Fires Are approached the stage sporting body paint in the band's colours of cobalt blue, magenta and white as if they were off to face battle on a psychedelic planet in dire need of some clansmen.
Opening their set with "When I'm Home" it becomes evident that this lot have even more substance to them than they did before. Vivacious and revelling in each other's company, creating an energy that was palpable in the crowd throughout their set which is no surprise from a band known to dip, drag, dive and dance throughout time, space and bodacious beats.
"I'm Here" was a standout track from the evening which started with a joint vocal harmony flying head first into an Incubus tasting riff - snapping into funky baselines with accented jagged guitars one minute when all of a sudden the song fills the entire room in a blanket of warmth.
Not mentioning "I've Got The Time" would be a crime. Yes, that did rhyme. Joking aside (unintentional that time) this song broke me a tad. Let's layout the menu - a foot stomping style anthemic appetiser, tripping melancholic keys avec brisk percussion for mains and a heap of 3 part harmony vocals injected with electricity for a chorus for dessert. Robbie and Matt proved themselves to have voices that can cause spines to shudder and hearts to stop, extremely powerful stuff. I have to mention that James' bass break is heart attack inducing enough on this song for this humble reviewer to drop his notebook. Ending with "Kill My Mind" which was clearly a crowd favourite paved the way for Treason Kings to mop up the body paint and my saliva from the floor. - Thomas Cummings
"We have had the pleasure of working with Where Fires Are for the last 18 months and have consistently found them to be an exceptional, hard working and professional band. They have an fantastic stage presence, and as a result of seeing them play live we have gone on to book them for a number of prestigious and large scale events that we have been working on. We are currently working with nearly two hundred bands from across the UK, and I can say with confidence that Where Fires Are are one of the most tenacious and dedicated of them all. They work with a solid strategy, and an excellent understanding of the modern industry, and as such I have no doubt that they will make the most of any international showcasing opportunity afforded to them”. - Jeff Thompson - Co-founder Un-Convention / Off Axis
These Leeds rockers seem to have been mistakenly booked to play a smaller stage instead of the Main Stage a bit further down the field. How their blistering tunes were expected to be contained to the area around the Woodlands Stage is a wonder. Their huge sound is stadium-bound – driving, finely-crafted guitar anthems, today delivered with a healthy amount of body paint.
The abstract shapes adorning the bodies of the five band members are as angular as the riffs wrapping around frontman Robbie Gillespie’s soaring vocals. There are a few hints of Biffy Clyro’s anthemic pop-rock in there, but rather than recreate verbatim, Where Fires Are boast an authentic vibe that they deliver with acute pride. - Bang The Drum
Where Fires Are – 'They Are The Enemy'
Though from Leeds, Where Fires Are offer up a more polished, frenetically-driven brand of alt rock; their incendiary live shows serving to bolster an arsenal of already-anthemic proportions. 'They Are The Enemy' is slightly softer than other tracks on offer, but its soaring chorus and meandering guitar licks make for something truly special. - Scruff of the Neck Records
Where Fires Are (7) produced an absolutely seminal, blistering set and ‘Kill My Mind’ is a cracking tune. - Virtual Festival
Kicking Saturday night off at the Dog and Parrot in Newcastle, was the dynamic five piece: Where Fires Are. The alt-rock group evoked an electric atmosphere, captivating the room through their colossal sound. Such an atmosphere was heightened by their superb stage presence, privileging the audience with their animated music and expressive groove. It is clear to see that these lads love the thrill of performing and radiate an exuberant vibe. The band are so in sync with one and another that even when the boys became submerged in their jam, their bold jives were in perfect time with another, almost resembling a hypnotic dance routine. Their sound was characterised by explosive bridges, poignant bass lines, regimented drums, hearty guitar riffs and keyboard/synth work that Kraftwerk would be proud of. The band's vocalist possesses a range as big as the sound of the rest of the group, indulging the audience with a ballsy grit and charming smooth mellifluous tones that resembled those of Anthony Kiedis from Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The group are volcanic and could easily fire up hige stadiums through their untameable energy. Where Fires Are - a must see band. - Sal Wilcox
