This is a Kwit-Koji to hear a special radio interview by our dear friend Mark Munger about the origins/mythology of SodHouses and how Dn'R came to live in them. It's gonna be neat because Mark sees the best in things and has a made-for-radio charm! - Mark Munger

Every once in a while an event so cool comes along you can't do anything else but get off your buns and go to it. Enter the Big Lebowski Bash. Cities around the country have put on parties in honor of the Coen Brothers film and cult favorite "The Big Lebowski" and now Sioux City is no different. While Jeff Bridges himself will not be making an apperance, believe us we tried but rest assured there will be another very special guest among our ranks. Therefor, the event is going to be the party of the year ... and what-have-you.
Rug still ties the room together -- even In Sod Houses
No, they still don't actually live in a sod house. But for husband and wife team Dustin and Rachel DeBoer, founding members of the band WeLiveinSodHouses, the urge to build one in their back yard, just to say they have one, is fierce.
Coming out of their non-sod home to provide the live music for the first-ever Big Lebowski Bash on Saturday, we caught up with Dustin, who provides lead vocals and guitar stylings for the band, to discuss the importance of roller skates, the Dude and life after winning the Weekender's Battle of the Band's in May.
Weekender: Since winning the Weekender sponsored Battle of the Bands, what have you been up to?
Dustin: We've done the River-Cade Festival and then we recently did the Sioux Falls Zombie Walk -- 1200 zombies is a sight to behold. We've also done some stuff at the Chesterfield. We're just getting a foothold here before we attempt to head out to Minneapolis, and Chicago. A new album is the focus for the winter here, we'll have it done before the grass is growing again.
W: Who is your favorite Big Lebowski character?
D: I always tell Rachel I would be the Dude if it wasn't for her; if it wasn't for her shaping my life so much. The Dude would be me.
W: Are you going to win the costume contest?
D: We're gonna try our best to costume it up this year. I've been growing as much facial hair as I can for the Dude but I may have to get a beard weave to make it happen. I'm trying to get one of those Pendleton sweaters, otherwise, robe and slippers for me. I'm also trying to talk people into being the Nihilist. But no one wants to be it, they don't care enough.
W: Can we expect some songs from the soundtrack on the lineup?
D: Everybody is trying to get me to do it, and I'm focusing on it. I might go with Dylan or the Stones. I don't wanna provide a cover if it's only half-assed because our band doesn't normally do covers. I'll try my best.
W: What is your bowling record normally?
D: Usually my first couple games are pretty good, I can bowl a couple good, and then I just don't do well. By my third game it's the beers that catch up to me. The leaguers watch and then realize I can't keep it going so they tell me ‘just stick to the tunes.'
W: Have you ever played in a bowling alley before?
D: No, we haven't -- we're going to scout it out. We're stoked, it's kind of one of those things that we've wanted to do. I spent a lot of my childhood at a bowling alley. The Plaza bowl is the old school style and perfect for this. Gotta have a rug still though for this. We'll hopefully be able to bring one in.
W: In your wildest dreams, who would show up to this Big Lebowski Bash?
D: Well like Bridges or Goodman would be pretty sweet obviously. I mean my big dream would be to have the Dude there.
W: Your song about wanting a girl in roller skates - how did that come about?
D: The song started out as a love song for Rachel, which I originally wrote in 1999. I wrote this for her. We had been married a year then. The sad part about being with a musician is that you get songs for presents. She would tear up when I played it and that meant a lot for me.
W: What do you guys normally do for the holidays?
D: For Thanksgiving we do our family stuff with the folks and since I was born on Christmas it's kind of all a big celebration. We have a family thing at our house with a chili dinner.
W: Why should people come out to this?
D: If they haven't been worn out by us playing shows all the time, this is the chance to come see us in action. Everyone loves this movie, if they don't, whatever! We're gonna have quite a crowd of people who want to see what's going to happen. This is truly an opportunity for people to do something they can't otherwise

Here are a few photos I shot Thursday at The Chesterfield where Sioux Falls based band "The Tinder Box", northwest Iowa based band "We Live in Sod Houses" and other bands delighted the small and appreciative crowd.
The show was free, the beer was cold and the music sounded great! Next time you see either of these bands billed anywhere - go see them!

Bio
Most of these songs were written in an old farmhouse on a windy hill above the big sioux river valley. Motivated by love, extreme seasons, and isolation, Rachel & Dustin started "We Live in Sod Houses".
We maintain an overall feeling of love & truth w/ a pinch melancholic desperation while changing style and genre. We invite the listeners to experience every joyous, hateful, optimism and despair filled moment with us.
Our band is a mix of characters that blend their styles in a manor such as to appeal to a wide audience. We have a high enegy stage show that involves the audience and invites them to feel like part of our rock 'n roll family.
