Endlich habe ich mal wieder was völlig Schräges im CD-Player. Die japanische Band 'Voluntary Mother Earth', bestehend aus Akihiko Hayakawa (Gitarre, Vocals und verantwortlich für alles Songs), Chunko (Bass und Vocals), Shon Mage (Drums und Vocals) und Yoko Iwasawa (Keyboards und Vocals ... mittlerweile aber nicht mehr bei der Band) sind beeinflusst von Frank Zappa (und das hört man gewaltig), Mimi Hendrix, Deep Purple und Led Zeppelin. Sie schrecken aber auch nicht zurück zu behaupten, sie wären auch von Michael Jackson und Willie Nelson beeinflusst worden. Nun gut ... die letzten zwei Namen wollen wir jetzt mal eher verschweigen, denn am ehesten geht die Musik tatsächlich in Richtung Frank Zappa ... genauso experimentell, genauso plötzlich wieder voll melodisch, immer mit einem Augenzwinkern (man beachte nur mal die Song-Titel wie 'Give Us A Tomato', 'I Said Just Water Please and She Gave Me Sprite' oder auch die Penis-Duologie 'Forgive My Penis' (geil hier die Michael Jackson und Britney Spears - Verarsche) und '... And You Got My Penis Hurt'). Hier einen Song herauszuheben, würde diesem 'Kunstwerk' sicher nicht gerecht werden. Trotzdem sei das Stück 'A Story Of The Typical Week Of A Starving Musician' erwähnt bei dem in knapp über 4 Minuten von Disco-Sound bis einem Country-Part alles verarbeitet wird. Man muss die CD wirklich mit einer großen Prise Humor genießen, sonst fehlt einem der Zugang. Aber neben dieser witzigen Art Musik zu verpacken möchte ich nicht unerwähnt lassen, dass die Musiker absolut ihr Handwerk verstehen. Von harten Rock-Riffs bis zu jazzigen Passagen haben die alles ziemlich perfekt drauf. Ein paar Sound-Files habe ich sogar bei Spiegel Online gefunden. Also einfach mal reinlauschen und dann den Link zu CDBaby nutzen und die Scheibe bestellen. Das ist köstliche Unterhaltung und musikalisch sind die Jungs auch nicht schlecht. Wer auf Zappa steht, sollte sich 'Voluntary Mother Earth' sowieso nicht entgehen lassen. Das sind würdige Erben dieser Art von Musik.

Si on veut, en quelques mots, rendre compte du projet que contient ce disque, il suffira de reprendre les termes du groupe lui-même : « eclectic, absurdist and eccentric rock ». Il est vrai qu?fau détour des neuf titres qui nous sont proposés il ne manque pas de surprises, de curiosités et surtout d?finfluences multiples qui contribuent à faire de cet enregistrement, un véritable régal pour les amateurs curieux de musiques diverses et inclassables. Autant le dire tout de suite, puisque le groupe s?fen réclame, Zappa et ses Mothers ne sont jamais loin et dans Free Head For A Free Ride, solo de guitare compris, l?funivers zappaïen est investi joyeusement. D?failleurs tout au long du disque on assiste à des pirouettes rythmiques, ruptures de ton, construction « à tiroirs » des compositions qui ne laissent pas de surprendre l?fauditeur pour toujours susciter l?fintérêt. Une autre dimension avérée de leur musique est le goût que le compositeur et guitariste a pour les riffs relevant du genre hard mélodique et les rythmiques pachydermiques.

Mais ce qui est à relever ce sont les nombreuses citations (ou « à la manière de?c ») que les musiciens glissent au sein des morceaux comme dans Jeremy Thorn 2007 où deux mesures de Lynyrd Skynyrd sont glissées (Sweet Home Alabama). Ou encore comme dans Forgive My Penis, le riff du Beat It de Michael Jackson. D?failleurs ce titre est un condensé de variations sur différents thèmes avec incursions dans différents genres. Hormis M-Jackson, on y entend une mélodie pop et sa ritournelle accrocheuse, un solo de guitare jazz calibré FM et des réminiscences d?fharmonies brésiliennes pour finir sur Oops I Did It Again. En fait chaque morceau est trop riche pour supporter une description mais l?fattention doit se porter sur tous les petits détails que les musiciens distillent aux quatre coins de leurs partitions.

Ajoutons, pour ne pas tromper le futur auditeur, que le groupe s?fy entend pour fondre toutes ses réminiscences dans des compositions originales, riches en couleurs éclatantes et fortement personnalisées. Espérons que l?faventure se poursuive et que le groupe puisse à nouveau enregistrer en ayant les moyens de ses ambitions. En tous cas si vos goûts vous portent vers des musiques à la fois riches et contrastées, aux influences diverses, et où les compétences des instrumentistes le disputent au réel talent du compositeur (ici, Akihiko Hayakawa), alors ce disque est pour vous !

Le Japon, vous connaissez ? Le groupe 'Volontary Mother Earth' ? Leur album 'Unacceptable Vegetable' ? Ben alors ? Comblons cette lacune : Impertinence et humour, doublé d'un évident talent, voila ce qui pourrait qualifier ce groupe ovni. Musicalement l'album navigue entre jazz, rock et prog avec aisance. Presque chaque titre réserve des surprises sonores cocasses et les textes sont assez... impertinents. Pas de doute les musiciens sont talentueux et leur patchwork musical se tient très bien. 'Give us a Tomato' est le titre qui vous donne d'emblée l'envie d'écouter tout l'album. Très riche, bien construit, on sent tout de suite que l'on a pas a faire à des débutants. 'Free Head for a Free Ride' continue dans un style jazzy bien tourné. 'I said...' devrait rappeller deux trois petites choses aux oreilles attentives. 'Valley Girl...' est une sorte de ballade amoureuse où le sujet central serait plutôt le sexe. 'Jeremy Thorn 2007' est un titre assez basique dans sa trame mais parsemé d'ovnis excellents, xylophone aux mélodies ironiques, guitare déjantée, paroles japonaises. Le thème lui ne change guère. 'A Story of The Typical Week of a Starving Musician' laisse un peu plus à désirer par sa construction, on s'ennuie un peu. 'Makes Me Wonder' possède un son admirable, guitare, clavier tout y est. Pastiche des 70's, mais très bon pastiche, un vrai bonheur à écouter. 'Forgive My Penis', il ben fallait l'écrire, du pure délire... On retrouve dans ce titre trois morceaux connus parodiés, je vous laisse les découvrir. '...and You Got My Penis Hurt' dernier titre de l'album, plus de sept minutes de musique très King Crmison avec des textes, disons déroutants. Un album peu sérieux dans les textes, parodiques, sarcastiques, impertinents, le tout emballé dans une musique riche, prenant ses sources un peu partout. Atypique à tout point de vu, cet album mérite que l'on s'y attarde.

Il titolo di questo cd mi ha ricordato un pochino il leggendario "Absolutely Free" delle Mothers of Invention, metto il cd nel lettore ed ascolto con molto piacere che l'influenza di Zappa si sente tutta, insieme ad altri elementi musicali più o meno contemporanei che mettono in risalto una verve satirica, goliardica e surreale, talvolta graffiante e talvolta totalmente assurda. Si sorride (e di più!) e si riflette durante l'ascolto di questo bel dischetto strampalato, seconda uscita dei Voluntary Mother Earth, gruppo nipponico nato dalla volontà di Akihiko Hayakawa (voce e chitarra) durante la permanenza nel collage di Denton, Texas, insieme ad altri suoi compagni di studio come ShonMage (batterista, uscito dalla band a pochi mesi dalla pubblicazione di U.V.). Trovato un assetto stabile nel gruppo con l'arrivo del tastierista Yuko Iwasawa e del bassista Chunko, e stabilita a Tokyo la propria base operitiva definitiva, i Voluntary Mother Earth sciorinano una serie di pezzi scatenati, a metà fra la presa in giro dell'alternative rock americano, un'attitudine improntata verso la contaminazione spinta e varie prelibatezze strumentali, il tutto condito dai testi e dalle ?gmediocre vocals?h di Akihiko; "Unacceptable Vegetable" dunque si ispira principalmente al Frank Zappa solista, con grossi agganci verso i Mr Bungle... e qualche spunto alla Naked Sun (!), con diverse aperture lievemente psichedeliche e trovate umoristiche tipicamente giapponesi assortite. Fra storie di sesso on the road ("Free Head for a Free Ride"), parodie di Michael Jackson ("Forgive My Penis") un divertente tributo zappiano ("Valley Girl meets Angela and a Long Thin Person somewhere in the Orient"), "Unacceptable Vegetable" è stravagante, divertente ed allucinato quanto basta per diventare un piccolo cult. E dietro a tanto estro ironico c'è anche un bel background strumentale fatto di grooves trascinanti, aperture jazzate di tutto rispetto, una grande energia (hard) rock, arrangiamenti ingegnosi ed attimi di puro delirio. Con un maggiore budget a disposizione i "Voluntary Mother Earth" potrebbero fare il loro colpo definitivo con un loro prossimo ed eventuale disco, aspettiamo ed incrociamo le dita!

Des oreilles attentives nippones m?favaient alerté sur l?fexistence de ce groupe originaire de Tokyo qui, dès sa formation en 2004 s?fefforçait de défendre son propos en concert tant au Japon qu?faux USA où d?failleurs en 2007 ils montèrent une tournée de 14 dates.

Ce fut donc une bonne surprise quand je découvris dans ma boite aux lettres ce "vrai" premier disque que Akihiko Hayakawa son leader, chanteur, guitariste et compositeur nous adressa sollicitant une chronique.

Le nom rappelant les projets satellites de Gong m?favait émoustillé et quand je lus dans son "dossier de presse" qu?fAkihiko présentait son disque comme un album d?fexcentrique-rock, d?favant-rock, d?favant-progressive et de rock expérimental, le tout mêlant le classique, le jazz, l?favant-garde, le classic-rock, le country, le métal moderne et la musique de pub, le tout concocté dans une voie que Frank Zappa aurait aimé faire, prétend-il?c, j?favais hâte d?fentendre ça !!!

De fait ce cd n?fest pas aussi ardu ou austère que cette longue description laisserait entendre, il est même un jouissif moment que je vais vous détailler après vous avoir donné le line-up.

Outre notre ami Aki, Voluntary Mother Earth est constitué de Chunko à la basse, de Shon Mage à la batterie et de Yuko Iwasawa aux claviers qui a déjà quitté le potager au moment d?fécrire ces lignes.

"Give us a tomato" est le premier des 9 morceaux pour un peu plus de 51 minutes et ça démarre par un truc hard atmo façon Threshold où premier constat, le chanteur assure bien et ce sans accent, puis ça délire genre la BO d'Amélie Poulain pour rebasculer vers du Pain of Salvation musclé où on nous sonne même le glas sur le final.

"Free head for a free ride" a une bonne intro jazz-rock à la basse, le reste suit et on se retrouve d?fun coup chez les Deep Purple, puis chez Gong par les vocaux plus parlés que chantés et je commence à comprendre ce à quoi ils pensent quand ils citent Zappa. Bien qu?fil ne suffise pas de mélanger les genres même avec talent pour s?fen revendiquer , il faut reconnaître que c?fest très bien fait et je n?fai encore rien vu (!). Ils vont même jusqu?fà copier des phrases de Rick Wakeman de "Yours is no disgrace" sur un mode déjanté ! C?fest électrique et drôlement bien foutu leur mix ! Ca vire même en blues à la fin...!

De l?fhumour sur bien des titres, la preuve avec "I said "Just water, please" and she gave me Sprite" où l?fintro est terrible à la Molly Hatchett, du bon rock sudiste bien gras à souhait avec toutefois une ligne de clavier en fond bien rentre-dedans, des vocaux en choeur à la Quiet Riot (!) pour partir sur du barré façon King Crimson, quand ce n?fest pas du chant style indiens d?fAmérique ou effectivement des développements à la Frank Zappa assez symphoniques !

"Valley girl meets Angela and a long thin person somewhere in the orient". Ca c?fest du titre ! Du Clapton en intro puis un univers plus Giant ou Mr Big avec une belle guitare acoustique pour une ballade hard mais en partie seulement car ils y ajoutent une pincée de jazz et de goth (!) ; ce sont des fous, tout le temps, cette propension à se servir du shaker est remarquable !!!

"Jeremy Thorn 2007" écrite en 2004 évoque un personnage réel, il fut le voisin de palier puis l?fami de Akihiko lorsque celui-çi habitait au USA (ce qui explique le très bon anglais pratiqué). Ce type était obsédé par les nanas japonaises bien qu?fil ne s?fen soit jamais tapé aucune ; aujourd?fhui en 2008 il en a trouvé une à marier et il vit à Osaka !

Le côté métal en intro est juste un alibi pour balancer de l?fénergie, s?fen suit en aparté des percussions traditionnelles japonaises et des ingrédients à la King Diamond pour faire peur, une passe jazz au piano et même quelques mesures de "Sweet home Alabama" de Lynyrd Skynyrd (!) et la cohésion prodiguée inspire le respect.

"A story of the tipical week of a starving musician" y voit du Blondie (!) sous amphétamines rencontrant Judas Priest, Willie Nelson (!) (oui le country man), leurs allumés compatriotes de Ruins et une bande de hooligans anglais saouls, et comme à chaque fois il y a une continuité, une cohérence incroyable !

Le morceau le plus sage est "Makes me wonder" quoiqu?fun mix de Billy Idol, de Dave Edmunds et de Rammstein se révèle forcément bizarre. Un prétexte pour le guitariste et le clavier pour nous sortir de vieilles sonorités psychés e - Koid9 Magazine (France)

This rock band from Japan certainly is out there with its crazy lyrics over rock music. Well, that is not exactly true in that two of the members are Japanese, but the band was formed in Texas of all places. Then they moved back to Tokyo after releasing their first CD.

Definitely nothing predictable with all the style changes going on in this album. Strange yet exciting. It will leave you wondering what is coming next. You can have a Weird Al Yankovic sounding songs and with in it you'll get a bluesy sounding section. Excerpts from "Sweet Home Alabama" mixed with some weird jazz piano section. Some of the lyrics are quite frankly a little bit racy, but nothing worse than what you've heard on many hip hop albums. They obviously mean to get a reaction from you and they most certainly will. I mean, c'mon they have two songs with the word 'penis' in the title.

Na początek trzeba napisać, że zespół ten jest bardzo mało, a nawet wcale nie znany w naszym kraju. Oczywiście nie znaczy to, że jest on kiepski. Bo nie jest! Dawno nie słyszałem czegoś równie innowacyjnego i szalonego! Zespół pochodzi z Tokio w Japonii i został założony między innymi przez Akihiko Hayakawa, który jest trzonem grupy. Co do gatunku muzyki, to można określić go jako połączenie dobrego rocka z elementami funk'u, gdzie prawie najważniejszą rolę odgrywa tekst utworów. Według mnie, najlepiej da opisać się ich twórczość za pomocą trzech porównań: manierze Franka Zappy, tekstów w stylu "Weird Al" Yankovic'a oraz zabawy z muzyką jak w przypadku Tenacious D. Te trzy aspekty sprawiają, że ich muzyka jest wybuchową mieszanką, obok której nie da się przejść obojętnym.

Co do samej płyty to należy wspomnieć, że jest to już ich drugi krążek, który również tym razem naładowany jest po brzegi świetnymi kawałkami. Rozpoczynający krążek "Give Us s Tomato" jest w stylu hard rocka, który powoduje niemałą gęsią skórkę. Grupa potrafi jednak zbalansować dawkę mocnego grania z dużą ilością humorystycznego i prześmiewczego tekstu, co powoduje, że utwór ten, według mnie jest jednym z najlepszych na tej płycie.

Kolejna rzecz, to typowy dla tego krążka, podtekst seksualny. "Free Head for a Free Ride" jeszcze przed wysłuchaniem powoduje u nas uśmiech na twarzy. Podobnie jest z dalszymi pozycjami na płycie, "Forgive My Penis" czy "And You Got My Penis Hurt". Oczywiście stworzone są one ze smakiem i słucha się ich z przyjemnością. Bo w końcu każdy młody mężczyzna wie jak to w świecie bywa. Świetnie wkomponowany w "Forgive My Penis" jest motyw z Michaelem Jackson'em, podczas którego aż wybucha się śmiechem.

"I Said "Just Water, Please" and She Gave Me Sprite" to już powrót do szybszego i bardziej mocniejszego grania. Podobnie jest z "Jeremy Thorn 2007". Oba te kawałki są silnym trzonem płyty. Także "A Story of the Typical Week of a Starving Musician" jest godny uwagi. Jest bardziej tanecznym kawałkiem, w którym słyszy się więcej funk'owych riffów.

Podsumowując tą płytę, należy powiedzieć, że nie jest to typowy album rockowy. Jest to bardziej rock absurdalny, którego teksty opowiadają o typowym życiu młodych ludzi na całym świecie. Jest to uniwersalna opowieść ubrana w mocne brzmienie i sarkastyczny humor. Fani Tenacius D i Yankovic'a na pewno znajdą w tym albumie coś dla siebie. Bo jest to album niebanalny i z "jajem". A to jest w tej całej zabawie najważniejsze.

This is some strange and nasty at times, Japanese rock music. Frank Zappa is cited as a main influence. The bio says they are from Tokyo but formed and recorded in Texas?c. This stuff is a little X-Rated at times and they really go for some crazy song titles and lyrics. It is made to provoke. The CD starts with Give us a Tomato which is quite a crazy song with a lot of different styles of music from like dramatic prog music with a bit of Mars Volta like influence to really heavy metal riffing and a strange accordion section. Free Head for a Free Ride is a weird bluesy track with a bit of Weird Al Yankovic thrown in. The last part of the song features an amazing psychedelic guitar jam. I said just water and she gave me Sprite is next and another strange one with a heavy riff and strange story. They use the keyboards in an interesting and strange way in this music, usually just to fuck it up and make it strange. Valley Girl meets Angela and a Long Thing Person somewhere in the Orient starts slowly and is a sort of weird ballad about having sex with the valley girl. One of the weaker songs. Jeremy Thorn 2007 really rocks like hell and features a quite strange keyboard line to balance against the hard rocking guitar. The band go into Sweet Home Alabama at one point in this track and other strange parts with piano jazz, etc. A story of a typical week of a Starving Musician is a funky number with some really cool guitar playing, but again, the band take the track in all kinds of directions including a middle part with a strange country like piece. Makes me Wonder starts off with a great guitar solo before coming down and some spacey keyboards in the background balance the track. The guitar solo section is most excellent. The CD ends with two Penis songs; Forgive my Penis and You got my Penis Hurt. Strange numbers but the last one is 7½ minutes and becomes musically very interesting halfway through with a part that reminds me of Black Sun Ensemble. One thing about this band, which some compare to Zappa (only in a small way), is this band is never predictable. You never know what is going to happen next. This makes the music exciting and strange as well. Excellent band.

What do you get when you mix powerful rock with funk and hilarity? A tomato, actually – which is, more specifically, an Unacceptable Vegetable. This album from Voluntary Mother Earth is insane and satirical, but also has a strong rock foundation.

Unacceptable Vegetable begins with an ominous bell tolling, but then launches straight into heavy rock. They make the hilarious demand of ?ggive us a tomato?h in the opening song of the same name. By this point, it has definitely stopped sounding ominous, and has instead set the album?fs rock-oriented sound. It also makes it clear that this band does not take themselves too seriously. The balance of head-nodding heavy metal sound and goofy lyrics in ?gGive Us a Tomato?h is certainly original, if a bit disconcerting at first.

?gFree Head for a Free Ride?h is a funkier song, with more of a jam-band feel. The subject matter of this tune is blatantly sexual, which is another common motif of this album. Take, for example, the last two tracks, which are respectively titled ?gForgive My Penis?h and ?g?c And You Got My Penis Hurt.?h

Frequently on Unacceptable Vegetable, Voluntary Mother Earth expresses the strangeness of everyday activities. This is especially true on ?gI Said ?eJust Water, Please?f and She Gave Me Sprite,?h which is about, well, just that. The entire song discusses someone who goes into an IHOP and orders water to drink, but, alas, gets a Sprite instead. Its extremely dramatic interpretation of the event is far funnier than its apparent ordinariness. This song isn?ft simply funny though – the theatrical rock accompanying the lyrics suits their satirical style.

Another standout track is ?gA Story of the Typical Week of a Starving Musician.?h This fast-paced song is not as hard rock as some of the rest of the album, but has more of a danceable sound, with the use of synth keyboards and funky guitar riffs. There is also a surprising honky-tonk break in the middle (which is not meant to be completely serious, of course).

Overall, Voluntary Mother Earth manages to combine heavy rock music with crazy lyrics and subject matters on Unacceptable Vegetable in a way that really works - as long as you don?ft take music too seriously.
