Bio
Urban-Gypsy of Toronto is an original music recording and music performance band. It is a fusion of Spanish, Chinese and Occidental Classical musical influences set in a Latin Rock environment. Unique and different, the band exists because the people in it want to work with each other.
The group is incomplete without all of its people and each player is considered non-replaceable by the others. Nat brings her beautiful voice and violin playing, Leo has his impossible to imitate high flying cello style and Mel brings that unmistakable Spanish style of lead and rhythm supporting a Rock and Roll voice.
Leo Chi Zhang: Vocal/Cello/Composer
A cellist since he was big enough to hold one, Leo has a career of playing and teaching cello. He is classically trained and has completed a post-graduate degree in music.
In Urban-Gypsy, Leo has expanded into doing vocals, particularly in harmony pieces. He plays mid and low range cello as well as the very best performers but he plays high range better than anyone on the planet.
Nat Wong: Vocal/Violin/Composer
Nat plays violin as it should be played, with grace and style. Prior to joining Urban-Gypsy she had been a sought-after and constant performer with a number of classical orchestras including those of Hamilton, Niagara, North Bay and Ottawa. She studied music at the University of Toronto which is her Alma Mater.
Nats voice is a contralto and has a haunting and memorable sweet tone. It gives Urban-Gypsys harmony structure, form and feeling. Nat was drawn to Urban-Gypsy for the free style and creative nature of the band, much different from the environment of classical music orchestras.
Mel Harrietha: Vocal/Guitar/Bass/Harmonica/Synthesizer/Composer.
A life-long musician, Mels 50 year career has included such groups as The Chosen Few, Montreal and The Classics Four.
His voice is unique in sound and expression. He can sing low and smooth and high and rough. He usually prefers rough as does the band's fans.
