"Word From The Street"

UpRooted/ The Den Recorders

Who: UpRooted/ The Den Recorders
What: Band — Jonathan Lane (Emcee), Casey Goode (Lead vocals/Guitar), Chris Olson (Keys/Guitar), Eric Montgomery (Lead Guitar), Tim Lawrence (Bass), Andy Davis (Drums), Darian Cowgill (Producer/Engineer)
Where: Pasadena, CA
API Gear: 500V rack, (2) 512c's
From the Street:

"I'm mostly an 'in-the-box' guy and because of this domain, having things so transparent as far as getting things into the box, these days I have to reach for color on the way in. Sorry, was that confusing? I just mean that my rig right now (like lots of others out there with killer AD/DA and clock and just overall amazing sample rates) can cause some audio sources to lose some of their character quickly and become sterile. Let's say, it's a little 'more lab coat'. This means that it's crucial to reach for color and character on the way in to the box even more so than ever before. Real transformers and caps and physical real estate laid out to handle audio with care, all of these add some really important things like smell, touch, taste, and yes 'color' to a signal path.

"I love hearing and using 512's on almost anything and the way that they stack together in the mix is awesome. Married with a pair of 550a's for some carve and a pair of 525's for some control? You're lined up through one of the most musical and fantastic sounding signal chains ever — and this makes a huge difference in the mix.

"Being a mixer that's 'in-the-box' most of the time, I use a bunch of plug-ins and of course I use API plugs, sometimes URS or WAVES and UAD as well. I'm not here to talk "shoot out" of them but it's awesome to know that API is signing off on some pretty amazing stuff. And I've also been known to run things back out and back through my 550's as well. Why? Because I can. What does it do? It makes it sound different, but shhhh don't tell anyone. I support what I love and when I find something that works for me, I drive it hard. So much so I ended up with this token of API on my arm."

"Recording Arts Students Organize Free Concert from 'UpRooted' during Convo"

Up-and-coming bands don’t always wait for CollegeFest to give students a free concert. UpRooted, a reggae/hip-hop/funk/rock fusion band, performed at Alumni Mall on Tuesday during Convo. The performance was the first recording arts department live show this semester, with students handling the setup, planning and implementation of arranging the free concert.
Students gathered around the Alumni Mall stage as the hustle and bustle of Convo raged on. UpRooted, fresh off playing to a sold-out crowd at the Roxy Theatre this past month, performed music from its latest EP, “Elevate,” among other songs in its repertoire. This free concert during Convo was added recently as yet another stop on its “Elevate Cali Tour.”
Some recording arts majors who spoke to the Loyolan suddenly felt that putting on the concert was a rewarding experience not just for them, but for students as well. “From the behind-the-scenes aspect, these concerts are good for recording arts students to learn how to set up a stage and run a show,” said junior recording arts major Gretchel Lomboy. “For students, we are in a state [filled with] culture, which is great for free concerts.” - Loyola Marymount University

Date: Friday January 6th, 2012
Line up: Zen Robbi, B Foundation, UpRooted, Reeform
Location: The Roxy Theatre. Hollywood, CA

As one of the first album drops of 2012, Zen Robbi celebrated the release of Lovely in the Middle in Hollywood, California. With fellow reggae-rock bands such as The B Foundation, UpRooted, Reeform joining them on stage, Zen Robbi’s release party was an amazing lift off for the new album. Lovely in the Middle is the fourth album release by Zen Robbi and after the drop on January 3rd, Friday night at the Roxy seemed the best way to let loose! Fans, also known as Zen Heads put on their band shirts to show their love for the band. With a strong knit love in the reggae-rock community, Iration as well as rock band Cage the Elephant were in the crowd Friday night to show their support for the album.
The Roxy Theatre (often just The Roxy) is the legendary nightclub located on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California. It was opened on September 23, 1973 and has played host to early stardom to live acts such as Guns N Roses, Pearl Jam & Janes Addiction. On Friday January 6th, 2012, The Roxy had every bit of it’s 450 person capacity filled to the brim. In attendance were fans & bands alike who came out in support of Zen Robbi’s highly anticipated album release party. Aside from the bands on the bill, there were an array of guest appearances that included Micah, Kai & Joe D. of Iration along with Lincoln from Cage the Elephant. Iration came out after recording and had to track the next day at 9:30am. Also joining the party was members of Meet Me At The Pub as well as Jamie Bullock, formerly of International Farmers, who later filled in on keys for both The B Foundation & Zen Robbi.
Reeform opened up with a sick set to kick off the night. From San Diego, California, the six-man band called Reeform was a perfect start for the celebration of a new album drop. For an opening group, located about 2 hours south of Hollywood, Reeform came in with an impressive opening crowd to get things started before turning the mic over to the Burbank, CA based group UpRooted. UpRooted put their hip-hop twist on reggae-rock spreading their cool sound to the crowd.
When The B Foundation hit the stage, all of their fans lined up around the stage and got ready to jam out. With a massive circle constantly moving throughout the set, The B Foundation pumped up the crowd with hit songs from their most recent album, Souvenirs Novelties and Party Tricks and much more. They closed out the set with “Go Away” with an onstage collaboration with Mic Dangerously, lead singer of Zen Robbi.
Zen Robbi rocked the Roxy from the moment they hit the stage. Starting off with a classic Zen hit, “Nova Scotia,” the band got the crowd singing and dancing early. Following up with “Black Jack Guru” and “Kings of California” to ring in the fans with their awesome hits. “Dance with Me” from the new album brought female vocalists, The B Foundation’s Jamie on keyboards, and the infamous Todd Forman of Sublime on saxophone to the stage. The diverse crowd of Zen Heads rocked away to the new song as the stage presence of Zen Robbi and guests overwhelmed the crowd with sick guitar riffs, Forman’s talent, and some pounding drum and bass.
“Revolution Avenue (Mexicoma),” “Champagne,” “Lovely in the Middle,” “Chingale,” “Cornucopia,” and “Saint Dangerously” were some of the new songs that made the set list. With fans already singing along to the new album, Zen Robbi played that unique sound of theirs all night long to the Hollywood crowd and brought fans up on stage to dance with the group while Zen Robbi continued to play. The Roxy Theatre, perfect for live music, was the best setting to watch the Zen Robbi rock out, allowing fans to experience that reggae-rock music that could be felt throughout your entire body. Bio

In a simpler time, before Facebook, Twitter and cell phones, six special newborns were shat from their mother’s wombs with a force and fury greater then any womb has ever seen. Stampeding through the cervix upon regal chariots and majestic white steeds, these children quickly developed into adulthood where they finally realized their divine purpose. To draw influence from reggae, rock, and hip-hop to create a new sound. Banded together throughout their journey to find this one of a kind sound, they resolved to simply refer to themselves as “UpRooted,” and made it their goal to melt faces across the United States.

After their official formation in 2009, UpRooted has quickly broadened their fan base all throughout the West Coast. Their live show brings an infectious energy that is unmatched while performing a dynamic set that’s sure to get their crowd singing and dancing along! While bound by a love of music, friendship and unity are UpRooted’s driving forces and sources of inspiration. The band’s front men, Casey Goode and Jonathan Lane, compose vocal melodies and rap verses that reflect a lyrical and rhythmic technicality unique to traditional reggae and hip-hop acts. Lead Guitarist, Eric Montgomery, masterfully layers thematically ingenious rifts, contributing a caliber of musicality that would be impressive to any listener while Tim Lawrence lays down tasty bass lines, ranging from smooth to slap. In 2012, the UpRooted family grew with the addition of long time friend Chris Olson on keys/guitar/vocals and former drummer of San Diego band Chimney Fish, Andy Davis, on drums.

Today, it seems that skies are the limit for UpRooted as they continue to grow their fan base by the day. Their first EP, recorded at the Den Recorders in Pasadena, CA, officially released on iTunes in July of 2011, garnering the band a great deal of exposure and positive reviews. Their second release titled "Elevate" dropped on January 22nd, 2013. It peaked at #4 on the itunes reggae charts and at #1 on Amazon in the International Rap Category.
