Tyler Shea, a Cape Bretoner who came up to Yellowknife for summer work, made his White Fox debut at the end of the jam. He carved a fresh sound into the evening with his soft, even voice and acoustic chords. He sang some contemporary covers and a few of his own songs before Jagger finished off the night with a powerful encore. Hopefully Shea will return to the stage before he splits for home next week. - The Yellowknifer

Tyler Anthony Shea was born July 12th, 1984 and raised in the small town of Louisdale in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Tyler grew up in a very musical family and was particularly inspired by his uncle and grandfather. His love for guitar began in grade 6 when he was only 12 years old and he has been penning songs since the age of 16. In 2002 when Tyler graduated high school, he moved to Halifax where he attended Dalhousie University. Although he was not majoring in music, he completed several music courses on topics including guitar theory, pop culture, recording studio techniques and guitar history. While living on campus, Tyler met a drummer by the name of Matthew Gorman. They started playing together frequently, utilizing the common lounge area in their residence as a jam space. After a period of actively searching for new band members, the original Tyler Shea Band was completed with the addition of bassist Mark Thistle.
In 2006 the Tyler Shea Band's first album, the Redfish Ep, was released. The Ep was recorded in 3 days at Redfish Audio with James R. Shaw. Guest musicians on the album included horn players, Jeffrey Mosher and Jody Lynes of the Mellotones (the hottest local Halifax funk/R & B band) and violinist Sean Kemp (Lennie Gallant & Symphony Nova Scotia). Tyler’s major influence on this album was The Dave Matthews Band, one of his all time favourite groups.
"Now You're In Love", the first single off the ep received radio attention across the province and was featured on podcasts across the country. The single even made its way through the United States on the 2008 Indie Music for Life compilation cd (www.indiemusicforlife.org).
Over the years Tyler has played solo and with his band at venues all across Nova Scotia and as far as the Northwest Territories, including but not limited to: The Seahorse (Halifax, NS), The Music Room (Halifax, NS), The Carleton (Halifax, NS), The Company House (Halifax, NS), The Trellis Cafe (Hubbards, NS), The Red Knight (Yarmouth, NS), Ross Creek Center for the Arts (Wolfville, NS), Granville Green (Port Hawkesbury, NS), The Wildcat Cafe (Yellowknife, NWT).
Tyler has opened up for many artists such as Matthew Barber, Craig Cardiff, Rebekah Higgs, Old Man Luedecke, Michael Redden, Oh Dina, The Prospector’s Union, Madison Avenue etc.
In his final years of University, Tyler was able to partake in a song writing seminar headed by Pat Pattison, a professor at Berklee School of music. Pat personally critiqued “Ghosts”, a song from the redfish Ep and compared it to the style of one of his former students, John Mayer. After some great advice, Tyler left the seminar with a new found desire to craft and perfect his songs and lyrics. Now looking up to Songwriter’s like Joel Plaskett and Damien Rice, Tyler began writing songs destined for the solo performer. In 2008 the Tyler Shea Band went their separate ways and Tyler continued on as a solo artist.
After a long two years of finding his voice, Tyler released his debut solo album. Paper Hearts dropped on December 4th, 2010 and it is quickly building hype for the singer/songwriter. Songs from the album are hastily being picked up by radio stations, internet radio and podcasts. Also, two songs have been considered for placements in an Independent film being released and distributed by Lionsgate films in 2011.
Today, he continues his determination to master his art in hopes of someday being globally recognized as a Canadian songwriter and an East Coast musician.
