It should come as no surprise that the world’s largest music draws acts from all over the country – and even some from other countries.
Traveling all the way from Vancouver, CA, alternative-rock band Trope is making their Wisconsin debut on the Uline Stage at this year’s Summerfest.
Trope’s sound is familiar yet refreshing – the band harvests the sounds of ‘80s and ‘90s alternative-rock while avoiding falling into the trap of sounding like a band that just couldn’t adapt to contemporary music trends. What they’ve done is breathe new life into a genre that has been decades past its heyday.
The band’s first single, “Lamb,” is a formal introduction to how the band is accomplishing this. Instrumentally, the song calls upon the sounds of Stone Temple Pilot and an easier-to-comprehend Tool. Add to the mix the exploding power of Evanescence – where the tone of the songs are emotively built up and then unleashed when it’s time for the chorus.
One of Trope’s strongest qualities is its ability to drive the songs – knowing when to tease a build-up, but then sink back into the catchy rhythm of the verse, only to burst into a head-banging bridge the next time around. Singer Diana Studenberg’s powerful voice takes the spotlight, and her ability to bellow out and sustain notes is impressive.
Trope is quickly making a name for itself, collaborating with big name music industry icons such as Mike Fraser – known for mixing five of AC/DC’s records – and David Bottrill – who has worked with bands like Tool and Stone Sour. There’s even a documentary in the works about the band – all this before they’ve even released a full length album.
Wisconsin Gazette had the opportunity to ask Dave Thompson, guitar player from Trope, some questions about the band and their upcoming performance at Summerfest.
Wisconsin Gazette: Could you tell me a little bit about how the band came together?
Dave Thompson: I met Diana in Toronto a few years back quite randomly actually. I overheard her humming a tune and asked if she was a singer. I was mainly producing artists back then. We struck up a conversation about music and then got together to work on a few of her original tracks. I then had to move to Vancouver for a project and about a year later she reached out and wanted to work on some new material. In the interim of producing other bands and artists, I had started writing my own material that really had no agenda, except just to satisfy my need for artistic expression and mitigate some anxiety and stress. I kept it pretty close to my chest for a while, and then one day I showed Diana an idea and her awesome engineering-degree brain understood the math in the music, and she came up with the lyrics and melodic idea that became “Lambs.” After that, we spent 2 years writing and recording demos and then approached some mutual heroes about making the album. That’s when Mike Fraser and David Bottrill came in. David was first, I sent him all the demos to get his feedback on them and then we went into the studio with Mike Fraser in Vancouver to track the album. I’m a huge fan of Mike’s work, especially on an album he did with John Sykes called Blue Murder.
Wig: How did you get a gig at Summerfest?
DT: Because we’re awesome! No, seriously, we reached out to the organizers and submitted our EP and then did a midnight moon dance and crossed all our appendages.
WiG: Have you performed in Wisconsin before?
DT: No this will be the first time, and we are so excited to come there. Seems like an awesome city full of people that love music! “The world’s largest music festival” is there, so it’s got to be awesome.
WiG: You’re working with a lot of people who are affiliated with big names. What’s it like working with them?
DT: Personally, it’s a dream come true man. I mean, you grow up listening to these iconic artists and then you realize that it’s the same guy or guys on the records helming them, engineering, mixing and mastering etc. You reach out to them, and hope what you’re doing resonates in some small way because basically I’m a product of influence. I’m standing on the shoulders of giants, and funneling influence into something that resonates with me. It’s like trying to make a super group of influences. Mike Fraser and David Bottrill are just brilliant, and then we got Ted Jensen to master the album, which was just the icing on the cake. Lots of rock royalty on our little record.
WiG: Tell me about the documentary you have coming out.
DT: Stewart Whelan, a fabulous and talented cinematographer for The Flash TV show and others, reached out to Diana to discuss an artistic passion project, and Diana showed him some of the tunes for the album, which then inspired Stewart to want to chronicle the process in the studio and beyond in an artistic way. It’s a work in process, and won’t be out until we actually deserve a documentary. Still tons of work to do, lots of shows to play before that happens. But it’s great to have baby pictures and video of Trope in its infancy, watching it grow.
WiG: Many online publications are likening your group to Tool and I can totally see that. Who are some groups that have influenced this band?
DT: It’s incredibly flattering to be compared to such an iconic and talented band such as Tool, but I think it’s a leap. Tool are in a class of their own. While we have songs that are odd time signatures with a heavy edge, half the album is in 4/4 and has an alternative rock aspect. We are huge fans of 90’s alternative music, and also 80’s new wave. Then there’s Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake, Rodriguez who are incredible story tellers. I’m also a fan of Coldplay, U2, Metallica, Stone Temple Pilots. So many great bands I’m sure have influenced us, even peripherally. Both Diana and I are fans of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Game of Thrones, so an element of epic fantasy is in there also. I think I just try to create music that I want to become a more epic and cooler version myself than what actually exists. I was bullied as a kid a lot, and wasn’t cool at all. I was terrible at sports, and not much better academically.
WiG: Your song “Lambs” is about bullying. What inspired you to write a song on that subject matter?
DT: What inspired the topic of bullying for Lambs was personally going through it for Diana, and dealing with its peripheral issues including betrayal and disrespect. Diana really wanted to address it in a way that looked at different angles of going through that experience that were broad enough, while maintaining emotional specificity, such that the listener could relate to the song, if they’ve been through similar challenging experiences. It wasn’t written from a literal narrative of an experience per say, just an embodied experience that uses analogies to take the listener on that journey with us.
WiG: Tell me about your album Eleutheromania. Is there an overarching theme?
DT: Eleutheromania means “a manic zeal for freedom.” The overarching theme of the record deals with the internal and external process of how to attain more freedom in oneself. It goes through a range of topics such as bullying, addiction, suppression, betrayal, self-growth -- all as an exploration for answers. The record in a sense concludes that self-awareness and focus are the two factors that help lead you closer to freedom, and how that awareness can help prevent certain destructive thought patterns and negative situations from repeating themselves.
WiG: Is there a release date for the album?
DT: The album is tentatively set for release in late fall, we will be releasing a new single in the next few months called “Breach” with a video also. “Breach” is a riff rocker with stellar vocals and lyrics by Diana.
WiG: What can people expect from Trope at Summerfest?
DT: We feel really blessed to be able to come to Summerfest and play on the Uline Warehouse stage on July 5. We will be playing all of Eleutheromania live, and that has its own challenges as the music is complex. Hopefully people will enjoy it, and if they do, come say "hi!" - Wisconsin Gazette
We recently connected with Diana Studenberg, lead vocalist and songwriter for Vancouver-based alt-rock band Trope, for an interview and intro to her group. Also featuring guitarist and producer Dave Thompson, Trope is garnering attention and glowing reviews from around the world for their newest track “Lambs” (listen on iTunes or Spotify). The impressive debut single covers a plethora of important topics from bullying to betrayal and we wanted to learn more about the band and their up-coming debut album Eleutheromania.
For starters, I would like to congratulate you on all your success so far, especially for such a new band. In just two years you have earned the attention of industry veterans, like Mike Fraser, David Bottrill and Ted Jensen. What was it like to work with such experienced and well-respected members of the music community and what have you learned from them?
Diana Studenberg: We were really grateful that both Mike, David, and Ted were willing to lend their talents to our record. Personally, I’m a big fan of the epic sound Mike coaxes, and I grew up listening to David’s work on bands including Dream Theater and Coheed and Cambria. We worked very closely with Mike, as he engineered the record, and we were in the studio day in, day out with him for just over a month.
There was a lot that I learned from working with Mike when it came to the extremely detailed level in which he listens to tone and pitch in instruments and also the value he placed on consistency in performance and hard work. He was incredibly meticulous, which is something I really appreciated. Working with David was amazing as well, albeit long-distance. We sent him the record during its pre-tracking stages and getting to hear what he heard in the music was extremely insightful.
When listening to your music I was mesmerized by its haunting nature, and I couldn’t help but think of Evanescence. You have also been compared to Tool and A Perfect Circle. What do you think of these comparisons and have any of these bands influenced your music?
Studenberg: Funny you should ask! It’s happened a [small] handful of times that I’ve been compared to Amy Lee. The blur is that it’s a massive honour to be compared to such a talented and successful musician. My only opinion with this specific comparison is that it feels at times like a bit of a broad-stroked comparison, especially given how different our music is and it, for the most part, even falling into a different genre with the presence of polyrhythms and being sung in lower registers.
I suppose I’ve seen it happen to other female vocalists as well, even in one case a growl band, and it can sometimes feel like the moment a band brushes against heavier-rock-with-a-dark-tinge and has a female vocalist - they get compared to Evanescence. I just hope that our pallet of female vocalists in hard/alt rock continues to grow and permeate the mainstream just like Evanescence did, to increase these points of comparison. Meanwhile, I’ll continue to take it as an enormous compliment... and also would love to sing a duet with Amy, among others, one day!
Being compared to Tool and APC again, is also an enormous compliment. Their particular music definitely does inspire some of my writing process. But then a bunch of other acts such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Imogen Heap, Jeff Buckley, Bjork I’d say contribute as much, if not more. It’s a mixed bag. I think all the above acts are really in leagues of their own, ultimately. We’re just trying to create something that’s as honest and unique an amalgamation of our influences that inspires us, and hopefully will the listener.
What is your dream musical collaboration?
Studenberg: Dave Thompson from Trope! Dave was a dream musical collaborator that I found out was a dream musical collaborator only once I started working with him. I love the alt rock music that he writes, I also love his electronic remixes, and just his songwriting/musicality in general. I feel like he is a true artist with a clear direction and vision, and with the ability to make strong and emotional choices, while remaining in an exploratory and open state. The combination of all those attributes feels extremely rare to me.
I’d love to at some point collaborate with Imogen Heap, I’m such a fan of what she does. I think she’s an absolutely incredible producer and songwriter. Her music still feels ahead of its time, perhaps even more so in this phase where, from a songwriting perspective, the mainstream pop feels very palatable, yet also very safe. I think the way she throws what feels like an endless supply of different sounds and elements into a single song is incredible. I see images in her music and can also hear an intense and very honest devotion to craft.
I also would like to work with Doc McKinney at some point. I met him a while back when I was but a wee young lass, and would love to collaborate someday on a very alt and weird type of fusion/alt record. There are tons of others though... I love collaboration! I love both aspects of bouncing ideas and getting to learn from others’ processes, as well as going into a corner of the sandbox and sculpting in an introverted way.
Noble Vybe says, “In the end of it all, integrity may be the keyword for ‘Lambs.’” After listening to “Lambs”, I think the keyword for me would be “real”. The song felt very emotional and personal to me. Diana, how do you achieve such real and personal lyrics? What is your songwriting process like?
Studenberg: That was a lovey review from Noble Vybe, we really appreciate them taking the time to write that. As far as the source of the lyrics goes - I only write about topics that I have first-hand experience with. And even at that just first-hand experience isn’t enough. The subject matter has to come from an almost desperate place of needing to write about that particular thing, to the point where it felt at times if I didn’t, I’d implode. It’s the stuff that rationalization nor therapy could fix. And so the only way to the other side of the issue for me is to write a song about it and explore possible solutions on how to process it. The blessed thing is that this actually helps me build more awareness and alleviates some of the anxiety that comes from feeling deep in the hole and thick of it, to being able to stand outside and gain perspective.
Regarding process, I’m just a huge fan of the craft of writing and of artists who are great writers. My consistent goal with the writing of melodies and lyrics is to come up with/channel something that matches the frequency of what I’m receiving musically, adds to it in some way, helps relieve anxiety/informs... and is something I couldn’t anticipate. I find that last goal to be incredibly hard, and I tend to break my brain over coming up with something that surprises me/doesn’t repeat patterns.
I’m not always successful as it can feel impossible given influence to fully break out of that, but I try my very best because in music, what connects/inspires me is that unique perspective in a shared emotional truth. Then again there’s something to be said about writing from influence and honouring that, but again that seems to happen regardless. I really ultimately feel incredibly blessed to get to write to the musical beds that Dave creates that feel beautifully deep, complex and endless.
And the shorter answer to your question is :) [!] - Dave writes all the instruments – guitar, bass, ebo, and drums and I write the melodies and all the lyrics, though at times Dave will weigh in on some of the melodies.
Where does the name Trope come from and what does it mean?
Studenberg: Dave came up with the name Trope. It means a cliché, something that’s been done before. You may have heard it used more commonly in literature or film. The reason for the name is that we work tirelessly to not repeat clichés in the writing, while also being heavily influenced by acts we love and pay homage to.
I love all genres of music but hip-hop is my go-to. In saying this, one rock band that has a special place in my heart is Linkin Park. I know musically you are different from them, but listening to “Lambs” for the first time evoked the same emotions in me as when I listened to “Numb” for the first time. Both songs have so much raw emotion. What are your thoughts on Linkin Park and Chester Bennington’s legacy on music?
Studenberg: That’s pretty awesome that you got a similar feeling from listening to “Lambs”. “Numb” was a song that meant a lot to me as well when I was growing up. I was a teenager when it came out and I remember learning all the lyrics and just butchering it in my room. I think Chester Bennington was extremely talented. He always felt very pure and honest and committed. Like he believed what he sang so much and would go to war for it. I know I join many in being deeply saddened by what happened to him. He was a light and definitely left a legacy behind him. His and Chris Cornell’s death, especially both happening so close to one another, had a big impact on me, and I just wish their families and close ones nothing but love and light.
The title of your up-coming album is Eleutheromania which means “a manic zeal for freedom”. After listening to your music I believe this is a very appropriate title. How did this album title come to be?
Studenberg: Dave strikes again! Dave came up with the title. I think it means slightly different things to both of us. For me, personally, a huge running theme in the record is about having felt stuck in many situations/types of relationships and how to “unstick”. The running solution and answer to all those conundrums, has been via increased awareness/freedom. It’s perhaps a broad-stroked response, yet it feels like a bit of a loop - our own empowerment and awareness come from expanding our internal sense of freedom, while that consciousness also expands into more freedom. Freedom is power. It’s creativity. It’s growth. It's love. It’s air. And our barometers for how much we’re willing to sacrifice differ from one person to the next.
Personally, I’d been sacrificing too much freedom for too long and felt like I was jumping from one cage to the next and was underwater. The awareness that swooped in at this point, as I felt the pressure increase, played a critical role. It forced me to move in the direction of what I needed… once I stopped ignoring and diluting those needs. This idea of feeling hope that you can unstick, and make however much more room for yourself, even if in small increments, is one I really hope to convey with this record to the listener.
On your website it says you are working on a documentary with renowned cinematographer Stewart Whelan. What will the title be and what can we expect from this documentary? What was it like to work with a cinematographer who has worked with legendary bands like Metallica?
Studenberg: Working with Stewart was absolutely incredible. He has such a clear view on how to setup an entire shoot and then just makes it happen, in a way that feels both smooth and intensely efficient. I feel very fortunate to have gotten to work with him and that he responded to the music. What he and the amazing crew he gathered on this project did was of uber epic proportions. We really appreciate him, the crew and also the support from William F White re lighting gear and Sim Digital re camera gear.
The documentary doesn’t yet have a title and is still very much in its embryonic stages, with some in-studio footage. I wish there was more to say, but it’s still in a really early phase of development. Will divulge more, as it comes! - Pure Grain Audio
In this First Concert Ever segment, Dave Thompson of the alternative rock band, Trope, talks about his first concert ever. You can check out the feature, after the break.
My first concert experience was seeing Pantera live in Brisbane, Australia in 2001. I was working in a music store at the time, and Dimebag had come in to look around. I helped him with something and he was a very nice person. I feel lucky to have briefly met him. A band from Brisbane, Powderfinger, opened for them which wasn’t a good fit. Powderfinger was a grunge/alternative type band and when the singer came out and started doing his best Eddie Vedder impersonation, he was bombarded with water bottles. I felt bad for them. I think today’s’ music listeners would be way more open minded and actually welcome the diversity of those two acts on the same bill. Pantera was awesome. at one point during the show, Phil came out with a cart of beers in those red cups and proceeded to spiral them out into the audience. This went on for a good 10 minutes or so, people madly trying to grab the cups as they went flying into the crowd, believing that when they caught the beers there would actually be some beer left in the cup. It was fun to watch though. Musically, Pantera was crushing in a really musical way. They are just such great songwriters and deliver with such commitment. Seeing that performance where an act was at once professional yet loose in their interactions, just really resonated. It made me think that you can do it all, be a killer world class band and also be yourself in the delivery of that. - Digital Tour Bus
Trope has become our favorite band. Trope has a sound that’s a pure and honest reflection of the artists own personality and it comes from a genuine place. The lyrics and the instrumentation are easy to follow and you can’t help but follow along in harmony. Don’t forget to spread to spread the word and share the song with your friends. - Keep Walking Music
From the first dark and mysterious bass line of ‘Lambs’, immediately reminiscent of Tool, you know you’re in for one hell of a ride. With the latest single from their forthcoming debut album Eleutheromania, Canadian band Trope offer a master class in building tension. There’s so much energy longing for release here that you can feel it tingling away at your skin. Opening with a heavy stomp as the song reflects on the nature of bullying, the track soon turns a corner into more frenetic territory as it turns to face the topic of betrayal. The change in tone, from steadfast to suspicious, says a lot about how the people we trust most hold the most power over us, and we are left to trust them not to break us down. From the intricate yet powerful instrumentals to Diana Studenberg’s show-stopping vocals, this is a track that demands your full attention and is more than worthy of it. - Belwood Music
Trope is a bit of a slow burner, with a slow guitar riff building up tension throughout the song. At first it seems as though the track isn’t going anywhere, but the sudden climax towards the end makes it all worth it.
Lambs are a hard rock band, in the style of Breaking Benjamin, Halestorm, and Evanescence. The music side of things could use a little more imagination, however there is certainly a lot of potential, and the vocals were very impressive – reminding us of a cross between Lizzy Hale and Amy Lee.
These guys have the potential to be big, so check the video for Trope out for yourselves! - York Calling
Coming from the great city of Vancouver in Canada, rock band Trope gives the world a brand new hot song titled 'Lambs'. Now don't be fooled by the simple title. Once you tune into it, the realization of the fact that the track is very solid will be swift.
Led by proficient singer and writer Diana Studenberg, the track essentially speaks in parts about bullying, trust, pain from others and blame. As Diana explains, '' The first half of 'Lambs' primarily deals with bullying, the observation of it, and the second half evolves into placing trust in people that only care for themselves but who present themselves as innocent {Lambs} and the feeling of betrayal that comes with that. Lambs also addresses the expectation of returned kindness, accumulation of pain from the lack of reciprocation and the cyclical damage to self that results from ignoring your own behaviours, and the subsequent projection of blame on to others.”
In the end of it all, integrity may be the keyword for this song. After all, the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles and moral uprightness is important to realize how much people around can be hurting. For this lesson, Trope earns a bright spot in Noble Vybe Music. With their awesome debut album Eleutheromania, the future is surely promising for the Canadian band. - Noble Vybe
To be fearless, to be comfortable riding the storm — and to be competent at creating such cathartic and exceptional lyricism — is originality at its peak.
Canadian quartet TROPE are this innovative outfit propelling towards a force of change and credibility.
Their debut single Lambs is a wonderful opening credit: a haunting, superb track of substance and energy. It’s dark, there’s no doubt, but it has been honed to shock and to provoke discussions.
Lambs opens beautifully with pulsating guitar lines and lead vocals from Diana Studenberg that are balanced and composed formidably. The arrangements are also diverse, coping under the strain of the atmospherics, which beat and hit enormous heights. And Trope are hitting strides here, lyrically it’s a masterstroke — poetically it’s sharp and majestic. Darkness exudes, hope seems crushed, but this dramatic sequence is powerful.
The story is firm and tells tales of heartbreak: Love is colliding with broken faith, bruises are shown, and poison travels through veins. The fable is arresting and beneath the overtones of the instrumentals, is well heard. It’s such an original contribution from a band of gallant musicians — who not only know how to play their instruments — but also know how to write like novelists…
Delving into Lambs is like sourcing material for a trailblazing book.
With Lambs, Trope have created a song of yearning — one that kick-starts emotions. A blitz of alternative rock at the top level.
5/5 - RawRamp
Any band that can mix the precision, intensity and progression of Tool with the euphoria and accessibility of all the best alternative metal of the last decade (see Chevelle, In This Moment, Bring Me The Horizon and Tesseract) gets our vote. The vocals are particularly outstanding here, while the drums and guitars constantly build, and make for an absolutely blistering conclusion. Listen/watch on…this is insanely good. - Soundsphere Mag

While reminiscent of A Perfect Circle or Tool with female vocals, Trope are much more than that. Their rich textures push them into progressive realms while their melodies keep them rooted in the alternative rock world. Meaning they are just at home playing a track with a dozen time changes or a four on the floor belter. Making their live show a jaw dropping experience.
Trope formed in 2016, when guitarist/producer Dave Thompson showed vocalist Diana Studenberg the embryo of what came to be their first song, Lambs. The duo spent the next 2 years writing and recording while searching for bandmates who could keep up with the constant time signature changes and feel of their music.
Trope’s sound not only caught the ear of everyone at Golden Robot Records, it also got the attention of studio legend Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Metallica) who engineered the bands forthcoming debut, Eleutheromania, with Thompson at the helm producing. Los Angeles based Alt-Rock newcomers, Trope have unveiled the first single, "Lambs", from their forthcoming debut album "Eleutheromania" to be released later in 2019 via Golden Robot Records
With its hypnotic bass guitar hook and ocean sized rolling riff underpinning the incredibly powerful vocals of Diana Studenberg, "Lambs" is the perfect appetiser for an album full of modern rock masterpieces.

Die Trope-Sängerin Diana Studenberg sagt: “To have the support and faith in something you work so hard to create, that you deeply hope will resonate with others, is a real blessing. We are extremely grateful to Golden Robot Records for their belief in us and fortunate to partner with people who really care and put music first. We are beyond excited about the future and incredibly thankful to the whole team at the label for this opportunity.“
Mark Alexander-Erber, Gründer und Präsident der Golden Robot Entertainment Group, sagt über die Band: „There’s something about Trope that instantly blew me away. They are exactly where modern heavy music is headed and a perfect fit for the label. Im looking forward to giving Trope the opportunity and freedom to achieve exactly what it is the set out to accomplish.“

Bio
Trope is an alternative rock band with progressive elements located in Hollywood, LA. The band formed in 2016 and spent the next couple of years writing and recording demos which became their debut album Eleutheromania, scheduled for release in fall of 2019.
Trope features guitarist/producer Dave Thompson, Diana Studenberg on vocals, Fernando Jaramillo on drums and Todd Demma on bass.
After recording the demos for Eleutheromania, they garnered the attention of the music industry including Mike Fraser (ACDC, Metallica) who agreed to engineer the album. David Bottrill (Tool, Peter Gabriel) also expressed interest and agreed to creatively consult and mix the album. Trope guitarist Dave Thompson produced and Ted Jensen (Eagles, Dave Mathews Band, Pantera, AIC) mastered the album.
Trope signed a world wide deal with Golden Robot Records in March, 2019.
Select upcoming shows include opening for The Cult in Reno June 14, for Switchfoot at Summerfest July 3rd, and an 18-date European tour, direct support for Kings X in September.
Trope’s music has been likened to A Perfect Circle and Tool with female vocals, their sound falling into the Art Rock genre. Their ‘music first’ focus pairs with the groups sound, which is quite progressive.
