The song could easily draw comparisons to likes of a Two Door Cinema Club with its moody lyrics sung over danceable, upbeat sounds seared by synths and precise, screeching guitars. - My Old Kentucky Blog
The best way to describe the sound of ‘Gallons‘ is the fuzzed-psychadelic punk sounds of SPLASHH being taught a lesson in energy and enthusiasm from the likes of Two Door Cinema Club or Get Cubs.Whilst the verses primarily tick over in a breezy way with melancholy vocals accompanying smooth, sparse guitars, the electronics help to give it a shock of buoyancy which brings the choruses a dancing brightness.
By the end of the track, you’ll find yourself fizzing with energy and looking forward to the next time Toy Cities get out their games and have another play around. - 7Bit Arcade
The Brooklyn band has created this lush lush bit of danceable pop that’s coated in synth lines and smooth vocal delivery; it’s a rather calm track until the group spins things in the pop direction during the chorus. You’re going to find yourself bobbing your head and tapping your toes as the song draws to a close, which should get you excited for the release of their debut album during the month of July. - Austin Town Hall
Presenting the premier of fresh track Pretend, Toy Cities have in their hands an accomplished offering of the polished, yet raw and scuzzy, dream-pop variety. Laden with spacious synths, resonating reverb and walls of sound plentiful enough to build your hopes from: Pretend embodies the introspective woozy swoon of shoe-gaze gone. Modernized, revived and tightly wrapped in densely melodic indie; Toy Cities penchant for perfected song craft, simmers and erupts so confidently, the after effect feels effortless. - The Music Ninja
For fans of synth-rock recording mastry, Toy Cities is an absolute must listen. “Nostalgia Kills,” is the first single from the Brooklyn-based indie group’s debut EP, Setting Son (which you can find via BandCamp). Sweeping synth pads, wandering bass runs and chiming arpeggiated guitar swirl behind a beautifully wafting melody, replete with enveloping harmonies to give the tune a spacey, ethereal feel. The trio describe their sound as a blend of “80′s post-punk and 90′s dream pop,” but regardless of the appropriateness of the descriptors it just equals incredibly engaging listening. There are metaphysical musings in the lyrical content to tease your frontal lobe as well. Do yourself a favor and give this one a spin… you shan’t be disappointed! - AmpKicker
"The track melds guitar riffs into the synth and drums for an uplifting and light melody that sort of contradicts the less-than-peppy lyrical message, but still provides you with the need to hear more." - Earmilk
When members of Toy Cities fell out of their previous projects earlier this year, it was because they were looking for a “different, creative outlet,” according to guitarist/vocalist Michael Nesci. Toy Cities merge catchy ’80s post-punk mixed with a ’90s indie-pop feel, so listeners can expect the music to “keep a pop underpinning below the dense sound.” The band teamed up with producer Chris Moore (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On The Radio) to oversee the recently released three-song EP, Setting Son. If you find yourself in New York this summer, keep an eye out for them at a club near you. --Bridjet Mendyuk - Alternative Press

Bio
Michael Nesci, Josh Harris and Mitchell Lee began making their brand of 80's
post-punk and 90's dream pop inspired indie rock under the moniker Toy
Cities in 2013. The Brooklyn based group spent the winter
locked away hashing out ideas to arrive at a sound that was awash in
spacious synths and buoyed by guitars dipped in modulating reverb.
Despite wavering and cascading tones, the band kept a tight focus on
melody and song-craft which keeps a pop underpinning below their dense
sound.
Following the release of the LP "Via Death" in 2014 the band began playing out, supporting such acts as Fort Lean, BOYTOY, Big Scary, Field Trip and Psychic Twin. The band returned to the studio in 2016 to record their EP "Ocean Bloom", which was released July 2016. Elevtrtrax said of the first single "Basement" - "my pick for the song of the summer – that is, in a reclusive anti-summer sort of way."
