Tony Anthony
Following the success of his 2010 solo album, 'Million Chance', reggae singer Tony Anthony is preparing to recapture his global audience with a new lover's rock single, titled Settle Down, due for release November 22, 2011 on iTunes.
Anthony's upcoming single, produced by Kemar 'Flava' McGregor, already has achieved significant radio airplay, resulting from the track's inclusion on McGregor's recently viral Cool and Deadly Riddim album, which was released November 1, 2011.
The track Settle Down represents the first of several lover's rock singles that Anthony is scheduled to record with McGregor, which plays to Anthony's greatest creative advantage - his smooth yet convincing vocal timbre.
"Lover's rock is a comfort zone for me, because I grew up listening to soul music and R&B songs," said Anthony. "With my love songs, you can pick out some soul and R&B flavour that my audience can relate to. People like it because it's relatable. Everyone can identify with love songs. Even a person who listens to dancehall can relate to lover's rock, because everybody deals with love."
And Anthony knows the power of lover's rock all too well. His 2010 lover's rock hit Tornaccumulated a veritable worldwide fan base in less than 12 months of radio airplay.
The song spent two weeks in the number-one spot on Richie B's Top 25 Reggae Singles Chart in Jamaica; it maintained a top 10 position for more than four months on the Foundation Radio Network's Reggae Singles Charts, both in New York and South Florida; and it also garnered lengthy radio-chart positions in England, The Netherlands, Canada, Italy, Virgin Islands and Kenya.
Two of Anthony's previous singles, Mark And The Beast(2006) and Yuh Nuh Simple (2007), were awarded Reggae Song of the Year at the Canadian Reggae Awards in 2007 and 2008, respectively, and the track Yuh Nuh Simple, a song encouraging children to stay in school, was featured for two years on UNICEF Canada's charitable website, beginning in late 2007.
McGregor first heard Anthony's music during mid-2010, on Richie B's Hot Mix programme on the HOT 102 radio station in Kingston, Jamaica. Upon his first listen, McGregor immediately became interested in recording the unique, emotional potency of Anthony's vocal concept.
"I was digging his sound," said McGregor. "I saw him as the next Maxi Priest, or the next Beres Hammond of lover's rock. When I first heard him, I was like, 'Wow, he has a good vocal, he has a strong singing voice, and it sounds appealing.' It all comes down to his sound. When you hear his voice, you want to listen to him. He's just like Gyptian or I-Wayne or Mavado - he has that kind of unique sound that makes you want to listen. No one else sounds like Tony Anthony, and Tony Anthony doesn't sound like anyone else."

It also debuted at number 20 on the Caribbean Top 30 music charts in the British Virgin Islands a few weeks ago.
Tony Anthony's 2010 debut album, Million Chance, continues to do well and is still topping reggae charts all over. Tony Anthony
The first thing that strikes you about Tony Anthony is that he can really sing. The talent of this Jamaican now living in Canada, is not a product of studio manipulation or 'Auto Tune' that has played a role in the success of so many 'singers' these days.
It is this pure talent that makes listening to Anthony's latest album, Million Chance, such a pleasure. His voice soars, carrying with it salient messages so desperately needed in these troubled times.
The album being marketed and distributed by Phylani Music in Ontario, Canada and the German-based Sound Quake Music, is a 15-song compilation of very good quality reggae music; music that is being heard all over the world but not so much in Jamaica these days.
From the very title track, Million Chance to I Still Haven't Found What I Am Looking For, Anthony's songs are loaded with positive messages. This Should Be Paradise, A Woman's Love, Time to Unite, Yuh Nuh Simple and Mark and the Beast, are among the standouts.
The music is first rate, the vocals strong and clean. In fact, Yuh Nuh Simple, that speaks to the importance of education, is featured on The United Nations Children's Education Fund's website. The song also gets heavy rotation on radio stations across Canada where Anthony has been living since the early 1990s.
Anthony's previous work has received significant critical acclaim. Several of the songs on this latest album have already received kudos from his peers. In 2008 at the Canadian Reggae Music Awards (CRMA), Anthony won the award as Comeback Artist for 2007. Then last year at the 2009 CRMA show, his song Yuh Nuh Simple won the award for Recording of the Year. Also that year Mark and the Beast won Song of the Year at the Canadian Reggae Achievements Awards.
Tony Anthony is currently nominated in three categories at the 2010 CRMA to be held on June 12 in Toronto.
All of this is not that much of a surprise. Tony Anthony, was born Mark Bennett and grew up in St. Catherine. It was during his early years here in Jamaica that his exceptional talents were first recognized.
At eight years old, his vocal prowess brought a congregation to its feet as he sang in church. However, it was not until he was about 14 years old that a chance encounter with reggae crooner Glen Washington set him on his current path.
After many years of performing as a guitarist and background vocalist in Jamaica and other Caribbean Islands, Anthony became a founding member of the band, Crucial Vibes. Their debut album Control Yourself was highly acclaimed. The band also toured North America, Asia, and the Caribbean to rave reviews even while performing alongside acts like Freddie McGregor, Dennis Brown, and Jimmy Cliff.
Now, the singer has several tour dates lined up for next month and with the release of Million Chance, a million other opportunities seem destined for this talented son of the soil.

Canada-based reggae singer hails positive wind of change
Balford Henry
Wednesday, November 26, 2008
Tony Anthony
Toronto-based reggae singer, Tony Anthony, says that there is a positive wind blowing across the North American continent which he hopes to capture in his new, as-yet-untitled album.
According to him, the change is probably best symbolised by the results of the recent US presidential election. The effect of Barack Obama winning the US presidential elections, he says, has spread into the Jamaican community re-energising its culture and its influence on the music of the continent.
"Jamaican music is still making an impact, especially dancehall music, and I see the potential for it to reach a higher degree if the makers of the music seize this opportunity and capitalise on its potential," Anthony said.
"Roots reggae is still holding its own, and the emergence of artistes like Tarrus Riley and Jah Cure, the constant professionalism of Beres Hammond and Morgan Heritage bode well for the music and the future," he added.
A native of St Catherine, Anthony has been singing seriously since meeting singer Glen Washington in Jamaica some years ago.
A past runner-up in the Tastee talent contest, he went on to work the North Coast tourist circuit performing with groups like the Daffodils and Crucial Vibes, before moving to Canada in 1992.
His latest single, Yuh No Simple (B-Crissas) has been doing exceptionally well both in Jamaica and his adopted country, Canada.
"It has gained recognition for me worldwide because of its lyrical content, counselling children and youths about the importance of a good education in order to live a productive life," he said.
UNICEF Canada has added the song to their website to help promote the importance of education.
The song went to number six on the Hot 102 FM reggae charts in Jamaica, Number five on the Virgin Islands WSTX 100 FM top 20 reggae charts and WVKR 91.3 FM in New York.
This success, working in collaboration with veteran Jamaican-born producer Neville Lee of B-Crissas Records in Toronto, Canada has led to a another single being release in Jamaica, Mark of the Beast, as well well as a collaboration on a new album to be released in the New Year.
Anthony, who is helping to promote the project, says that the CD will comprise a variety of songs for all sorts of reggae fans.
"I am aiming to satisfy the palate of all lovers of reggae music and that's why I am deliberately including songs that I know the fans of all aspects of the music will relate to and enjoy," Anthony said

The Caribbean communities in Toronto, Ontario are grooving to the vocal sounds of a new star on the reggae horizon (drum roll please), the incredibly gifted Tony Anthony. He is one of those rare reggae figures whose voice gains force and resonance as he grows older.
