Bio
Dylan wanted free reign to create ambitious, experimental, multi-suite arrangements within the frame of a hooky, 4-minute pop song. Maya wanted to pen lyrics and melodies that indulged her geeky penchant for useless knowledge. The two serendipitously crossed paths in 2008 and quickly realized that they shared equally nerdy musical inclinations. They soon began to record a handful of self-produced demo tracks with multi-instrumentalist, Eamon. These tracks attracted the attention of keyboardist and Austin, TX transplant Nic, as well as L.A. bassist Jason. Finally, Natalie added much needed harmony and depth to the soaring, classically-inspired vocals.
With everyone's distinct tastes given license, the result is a grand, whimsical, and energetic set of songs with lyrical themes as diverse as the 19th Century American Transcendentalist movement and a Lord Byron loving serial killer.
Influences/Similarities:
Songs have the dynamics and indie-bombast of Band of Horses and Wolf Parade
Vocals have the classical meets pop timbre of Kate Bush and Bat for Lashes
Lyrics are literary and allusion-filled, similar to The Decemberists and Andrew Bird
Dense production a la Radiohead and Arcade Fire
Some elements of electronic experimentalism like Animal Collective and Xiu Xiu
