I’m an idiot.
I’m in the gym the other night, and I cue up my “MISC” playlist for the workout. This is a playlist of stray songs that I just throw together when I don’t really care to organize anything at the time. Drake’s “We Made It” just faded out, and in came another song that completely caught me off guard. “What the hell is this? This is NICE!!!!!!!!” Looked at the iPod: Tiny Hearts : Snow Cold.
Took me a while to register, but then I vaguely remember FWMJ sending me a link or something at 3AM about a month before. (He does it all the time). I literally kicked myself (don’t ask me how) for waiting an entire month to listen to this song, and it ended up being the only song that I listened to for the rest of the workout. I asked FWMJ about it when I got home, and he hit me with a snarky “duh” or “you slippin”, as he’s prone to do . Then he linked me to the Bandcamp. Credit card info memorized. Bought. Downloaded. Immediate fan.

If you're on the East Coast right now this song, by LA-based trio Tiny Hearts, is extra appropriate. As a blizzard rages outside, singer Dede applies her glacially seductive tones to the hypnotic, synth-stuttered, Moroder-esque single "Snow Cold"—crafted by fellow Tiny Hearts, Waajeed (a founding member of Detroit's Slum Village and Platinum Pied Pipers) and jazz-trained producer Tim K. The video is similarly film noir cool and slickly styled to boot (nice Maison Martin Margiela perspex wedges).

Dede from Tiny Hearts had this to say about it: "The video documents a journey of a character from the depths of an underground garage to the edge of civilization. The dreamlike bokeh offers a study in binary sequence as the simple code and structure of a technologically advanced society. Anthony Valadez of The Collective Powered by VEVO (airing every Thursday at 10pm ET) always has his ear on the ground when it comes to new sounds and bands. This time, he is introducing us to the electronica sounds of the group, Tiny Hearts.
Comprised of a trifecta of talent with vocalist Deanne Reynolds, producer Jeedo X, and producer and composer Tim K, the group is fairly new having come together in 2011. Working with producer Waajeed, the group feels like they stepped up their game. When asked what are their influential music genres, soul, R&B, post-techno, post-house and with a little bit of jazz seem to cover it. One of the most talented and nicest blokes that I know is Tim K. Tim K is a classically trained musician and a member of the band Tiny Hearts. Tiny Hearts is an electronic, post-trap trio from Los Angeles and Detroit that consists of fellow producer Waajeed (Slum Village, Platinum Pied Pipers), singer Dede Reynolds, and Tim K himself (Les Nubians, Dam Funk, Esthero). Their music is an intense study in music juxtaposition, combining the aggressive and futuristic programming of Waajeed with Dede’s haunting vocals. Equal parts Brooklyn, Detroit and Los Angeles in origin, the trio Tiny Hearts makes music that is equal parts electro-soul, jazz-hop and synth-pop, like a cross between Poliça and Portishead. Tiny Hearts, “Snow Cold”................ - NPR Here & Now

As a follow up to their stellar debut Stay EP, eclectic electro-soul trio Tiny Hearts give their single of the same name the video treatment. Its a surrealistic portrait of domestic life, depicting two children happening upon a living room full of floating men who spring to life and start dancing. Strange and often beautiful, “Stay” isn’t the sort of video you’d necessarily envision when listening to the song that inspired it, but it’s a treatment that creates an intriguing, abstract new accompaniment, a set of images that don’t reveal clear purpose immediately. Offering the potential for interpretation on repeat plays, “Stay” is a fitting companion to layered and rewarding music. - Pigeons and Planes

Tiny Hearts caught my attention via producer Waajeed.

Another lifetime ago, Waajeed was a dj/collaborator in Detroit hip hop group Slum Village. He then moved onto a project that went under the moniker of Platinum Pied Pipers (PPP) which, at that time, caught the attention of many music journalists and DJs. It was nothing like his earlier production work — Rhodes, off tempo snares and vocals were the most dominant elements in the PPP sound.

Waajeed ended up using the name “Jeedo” and began putting out instrumental projects here and there.

Then, out of nowhere, appeared Tiny Hearts. Formed in a bar somewhere in Brooklyn, Jeedo hooked up with Tim K and Dede Reynolds to create something new and different.

The track “Centerfold” caught my attention with its bouncy synth and live drum element. Dede’s vocals are dreamy, spacey and just right in the mix.
Now based mostly in LA, the band plays a show at the Bootleg Theatre this Wednesday. I’m excited to open for them and to see this project come to life!

My favorite group at the moment Tiny Hearts – Snow Cold. - Better Never Than Late

The comrades of Tiny Hearts ® (Waajeed, Dede Reynolds, Tim K) met at a bar beneath the J train in New York City. Cadillac margaritas and invisible hands pushed the three to a southside basement for a late night listening session. Resulting remixes led to original mixes, and the group was formed. Voices from the beyond, esoteric concepts and milkshake metrics all played a role in this groups’ fruition. The result: a reflection of intention.... - The Orange Press

I don't know about you guys, but I like my electro pop a little uncomfortable. A dissonant sound, contrasting lyrics or purposeful ugliness are a great tempering element for pop's potential for saccharine sweetness. It's like salted caramel.

That's what I'm loving about "Stay," an electro pop single from relatively new group Tiny Hearts. It starts with a minimal beat, something an indie band like The Blow would turn into a sparse pop tune. But then a yeti adds a layer of distorted growling to anchor the whole song: "tell me when to stay / never let go / tell me when to stay / never let go." It's the kind of sound that defines a songs appeal. But there's another secret ingredient -- Dede Reynolds' soulful voice that seems to glide over and through the beat. It's a small thing, but it shows off their ear for soundscapes and forward thinking tastes.

Tiny Hearts is Dede Reynolds, Jeedo (aka Wajeed of Slum Village) and Tim K. They recall some of the great R&B fusion work of bands like Little Dragon or the cutting edge composing of artists like Jai Paul. It's sharp, moody and refreshingly modern. "Stay" is the stand out, but you can find even more of their work at their SoundCloud.

Producer Waajeed has a track record that goes back to work with J Dilla and Slum Village on Detroit’s hip-hop scene. He then went on to redefine nu soul in the 2000's with his Platinum Pied Pipers project.

Then he disappeared.

Or rather, he laid low for a few years to re-tool his sound and develop new concepts.

The result was Dirt Tech Reck an eponymous label and recording project that took his rugged beatcraft in a more twisted and raw direction.

Waajeed’s sabbatical also yielded Tiny Hearts, his new vocalist/electronic hybrid group.

Amongst the multitude of brilliant releases, you might have overlooked Tiny Hearts’ Stay EP. We covered the artistically decorated video for Centerfold and now it’s the turn of their first release. The group comprising of Sampleface favourite Waajeed, Dede Reynolds and Tim K, fashioned the four track EP after a meeting in a bar in New York and the mix of Waajeed’s techno and hip hop background and Dede and Tim K’s dreamy synth pop (the latter of whom form their own group, DEDE) make both themselves and their productions bob like buoys in the electronic-heavy sea of modern music. Nothing is superfluous or wasted on the EP, from moody title track to the expertly-produced Snow Cold.

While everyone is up Lorde’s vagina with the ever quickness I have to say y’all just hit the snooze button on Dede Reynolds, Jeedo, and Tim K are doing it right. I saw on the Twitter’s that folks wanted to see Kanye and Lorde do a song together well go ahead and listen to “Stay” and you tell me that doesn’t sound like something they would do? I’ll wait. The only exception is that Dede, in my humble opinion, is better than Lorde. Yes I just said that. So if you have a problem with it put up or shut up. Don’t Sleep. - Original Mattress

Dynamic. Erotic. Cinematic. Those are the type of clear adjectives that describe the feel of Tiny Heart’s Stay EP. It’s 15+ minutes of singer Dede and producers Tim K and Waajeed’s metropolitan late-night wave. The trio carefully pivots around the roots of r&b, soul and 80s pop to craft a sound that is intimate and magnetic, while being contemporary and futuristic. While the bastard children of rhythm and blues continue to whore themselves out to the latest trends on the mainstream (terribly singing and dancing about empty sex in lavish clubs), Tiny Hearts adds to a list of progressives like Muhsinah, Sonnymoon, and Cocaine 80s incubating that weary spirit in the now.

The lead single/video “Centerfold” is a stuttering concoction of razor blade bass, airy synth, and electric ambience that envelops Dede’s voice just enough for her to sweetly break on through. The EP’s opening song “Stay” sounds like it could easily sit on contemporary urban radio with its trap-ish undertone and pitched-down vocal harmony. Yet, the song is equal parts tender and elegant that makes one want to throw light ‘bows while reminiscing about a past love. The real winner on the EP though is “Snow Cold”, which sounds like theme music to a sci-fi flick about robot trying to escape termination. Tim K and Waajeed create these oscillating funky low-ends within the song that bleed into anxious textures Dede angelically glides over; it’s simply one of the best songs I’ve heard all year.

While I don’t want to over-hype a four song set, I do hope this EP gains Tiny Hearts a healthy fan base that will not be satisfied with this short sonic bliss and bring us a full length soon. Dede’s voice (while not a towering power), has a tone that sooths, guides, and seduces the listener through the layers of Tim and Waajeed’s dreamy fragmented boom. The music sounds like crushed glass reflecting images of lovers, insects, and aliens revealing life’s little secrets across the best cityscapes. Let’s hope this small humble beginning echoes through the internet and begins to make some serious noise. - Potholes In My Blog

This was Tiny Hearts first official live show (other than the Boiler Room set) and the trio had the room moving. As they began their set the room begin to fill full of spectators. Tim K kicked off the harmonies with his voice box as Jeedo laid down samples and drums which had the heads bopping. Dede took to the stage and owned it! This was a great live set by the trio and I hope to see more of them! It was also great to bump into KPFK’s Morgan Rhodes and J Rocc in the building. - ANTVALA

To try to rigidly classify Tiny Hearts' music is to do it reductive injustice. Poppy without being corny, alternatively icy and warm, indebted to experimental soul, Detroit hip-hop, and a laundry list of other influences, "Stay"–the opening track to the trio's EP of the same name–manages to mix its constituent parts without feeling like some horrible genre-jumping Frankenstein. The irony of one of my happiest finds last year just happened to be in the worst place. Rent so high that all the real artists moved out, hipster heaven Williamburg, Brooklyn — The Burg.We were introduced by my homie JT Donaldson that I used to DJ with at the W Hotel in Union Square. I met Tim K there and later met his darling partner in crime, Dede Reynolds. Together they are DeDe.

One late night after several Cadillac margaritas inspired by Dam Funk, we stumbled back to their apartment where I heard their yet to be released project. WHOA! Today, though, he breaks his silence with a slightly more refined project than what we have seen from the Detroit producer in the past. Next month Robert O’Bryant aka Jeedo aka Waajeed meaning ‘finder’ or ‘seeker’ in Arabic will be touring Australia. Presented by Grindin’ there will be two shows in Melbourne and one in Sydney, Byron Bay and Adelaide. Jeedo is a man with his fingers in may pies, notably he is one half of Platinum Pied Pipers; Dirt Tech Reck is his record label; he was mentored by the late and great J Dilla; designed the cover for Slum Village’s Fantastic, Vol.2 album – he is also a visual artist (reader take a breather).
As a seeker, like his name suggests, he believes in musical progress. Kiwis Ladi 6 and Parks went and recorded their upcoming album with him in Detroit and he’s looking forward to do more work down under. After living in New York he’s now back home in Detroit he says, it’s so he can ‘defend and contribute to my community’. A more recent project of his has been with the duo, Tiny Hearts from Brooklyn. The three of them now have an upcoming EP titled Tiny Hearts Stay that’s steadily generating a demand on their Facebook page. What’s notable about interviewing Waajeed is that he lives and breathes his work. What’s refreshing about him is he’s not keen for people and their bullshit. He needs you to be open minded. He needs you to recognize that Detroit had Motown, but they also made Techno. He needs you not to be a snob and love music for the music and if you won’t, well then he expresses, you can fuck off. In the interview with Grindin’ we get an insight into what he observed of J Dilla and how his art and life, to him, are one and the same.

We hope you’re still not sleeping on Waajeed. The Detroit-native has been spreading himself across a multitude of genres all the while keeping the music strong and expansive but this latest foray into electro-soul/R&B is quite robust. Jeedo has put together Tiny Hearts with pop duo DEDE (Deanne “Dede” Reynolds and Tim K) and their latest track and video, Centerfold, is refined in colour both musically and visually. The off-kilter synth lead works immensely with the acoustic drum beat and the kaleidoscopic scenery are the perfect backdrop for Dede’s echoey vocals. Really enjoyed this and I’m liking this direction for Jeedo.

Tiny Hearts is a collaboration born in Brooklyn between nomadic soul vocalist Dede, jazz composer/songwriter Tim K and Jeedo a/k/a Waajeed of Platinum Pied Pipers and Slum Village lineage.

The trio is soundly in the intersection of soul and electronic production elements; playing with the balance of dark and light, hard and soft. “Centerfold” stands out as a showcase of the sound that Waajeed really developed in his Platinum Pied Piper days with Georgia Anne Muldrow and Tiombe Lockhart (of Cubic Zirconia).

The project travels into unchartered territory with “Snowcold,” “Calling” and “Stay,” which has awesome pitch adjust and some autotune/melodyne vocal effects that were tweaked to sweet perfection. Took me a while to register, but then I vaguely remember FWMJ sending me a link or something at 3AM about a month before. (He does it all the time). I literally kicked myself (don’t ask me how) for waiting an entire month to listen to this song, and it ended up being the only song that I listened to for the rest of the workout. I asked FWMJ about it when I got home, and he hit me with a snarky “duh” or “you slippin”, as he’s prone to do . Then he linked me to the Bandcamp. Credit card info memorized. Bought. Downloaded. Immediate fan.

Even in today’s internet age, in which “different” is the in-thing, you’ll be hard-pressed to find an EP as unique as this one. This Detroit collective blends genres, breaks rules, steps out of the box, etc. The production on this EP can best be described as “dream-like”.
