Tiger Darrow may be best known for her acting work in the Robert Rodriguez Spy Kids series, and her scoring efforts on his most recent film, Machete. But Darrow is just a student at Booker T. Washington, a kid star of sorts. And only three months into 2011, the accomplished 18-year-old has already released two albums. Her most recent record, You Know Who You Are, is an exercise in cramming a lot into only a little space. For starters, the record has an exhausting 15 songs on the tracklist. Furthermore, she makes a regular practice of squeezing four-syllable words into one-syllable spaces. To call "In Love With A Boy" a "wordy" song would be an understatement. And while you can tell the young singer is just having fun, it simply doesn't translate on record. Instead, she sounds like a sweet-voiced auctioneer, hawking the fact that she's a prolific artist.
There is potential here, though. Her voice is richer and more sultry than her age would suggest, and the fact that she produced, recorded and mixed the entire album on her own is impressive. It's just the songwriting that suffers.

The Dallas based (Austin-Raised) musical talent Tiger Darrow is expanding from our Texas comforts to tackle the Big Apple. The Booker T. Washington High School senior sat down with PSD to chat about the wacky good times she’s had in her 18 years. Tiger‘s name invokes a lot of the qualities in her singing. She’s powerful, vibrant, enchanting and striking. The real story of her name invokes the other qualities of her singing. She’s youthful, outgoing and inventive. Its a hell of a package to have. She’s been running the show for a long time. I asked Tiger if she got a thrill at the challenge of conquering something new and she gave a really honest answer, that hints at her true passion. Her tremendous ambition can easily be seen in the fact that she has two new albums, Hello and You Know Who You Are. The albums have a lot of variation in that they are very different. They both showcase her talents and put together you have the full impact of her sound. Now its interesting to realize that she’s still morphing as an artist and she explained how she really wants her music to have a film quality. Her extensive film background continues to pop up in her life. Her music is starting to have a film like quality and she’s going to be studying composition and music theory (with a concentration on Film Scoring) at NYU, which she actually has film scoring experience now because of Robert Rodriguez. Tiger talks about the set on which she first learned about the film making process.

Every once in awhile I do an interview that makes me say, "Wow thanks for being so cool, honest, and open." This is definitely one of those. Readers, this is Tiger Darrow. She has an amazing voice and is also a talented violinist, cellist, guitarist, and pianist. Oh yeah, did I mention she's an actress too? She has done work in the Spy Kids Series, and recently did the musical score for Machete. So read through the interview and learn a little more about Tiger. Scroll to the bottom to check out her musical links and IMDB page.
Tell me a little bit about your new albums, and why people should listen to you?
"My new albums are pretty different from each other. Hello was co-written with and produced by Cary Pierce. I did everything on You Know Who You Are completely on my own (writing, recording, engineering, etc). While Hello is more easily classified as "pop," I'm not sure about the genre of You Know Who You Are because it's a crazy meshing of different styles. Some people have referred to it as my "experimental" album because I played around with all sorts of different genres. What I'm really proud of in my music is that what I write is genuinely from my heart. The idea behind You Know Who You Are is that every song was written about someone in my life, and if they were to listen to the album with that in mind, they could figure out which song is about them. Because of this, I like to think that my music is easy for people to relate to. I would love for people to be able to use my music as a source of inspiration to help them get through difficult times or celebrate happy times."

In a music world that's continually bombarded by next-big-thing wannabes with big-time backing and bought-and-paid-for media coverage, every so often an actual diamond finds a way to gleam through the glitz. By all indications, Tiger Darrow has a real shot at that distinction.
Darrow first came across my radar while I was attending a show at La Grange by Dallas band Bonedome, the brainchild of Darrow's uncle, Alan Hayslip. Since sit-ins are an unremarkable occurrence at local club gigs, most of the crowd paid little or no mind as Darrow took the stage. Once she began to sing, however, appreciative glances were exchanged, indicating that most everyone agreed she wasn't introduced out of mere familial obligation.
Darrow now has a new record -- available on iTunes, and officially releasing today, March 3. What becomes obvious after a single listen is that this new work is a concerted effort to assert her creative and musical independence -- a courageous venture for a girl who hasn't yet finished high school.
Asked how the new record, "You Know Who You Are," differs from "Hello," Darrow doesn't hesitate to explain, "The songs on my first record were collaborations with Cary Pierce [Jackopierce]. On the new one, I wrote all the songs myself and played all the instruments." As if that weren't impressive enough, the Booker T. Washington student's answer to my inquiry about exactly which instruments she played drove the point home. "Guitar, piano, mandolin ... a little bit of everything."
Keep Tiger Darrow on your radar. She's already earning a rising chorus of admirers in DFW, Denton and Austin (she's booked to play at Lambert's Barbecue in Austin with Dan Dyer on March 24). Catch her next here in Dallas at Opening Bell March 9 or at the Kessler April 14.

When she talks about her career in the industry, there’s a charming nonchalance in her tone. Austin-raised, Dallas-based Tiger Darrow says she started working in film when she was 7 and “transitioned” into songwriting at 12. The singer/songwriter/cellist/guitarist is now a senior at Dallas’ Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, but hasn’t let studying for class get in the way of producing records.
In January, Darrow released a pair of records – Hello (which was produced by Cary Pierce of Dallas cult favorites Jackopierce) and You Know Who You Are (which she produced herself).
There’s an ease about the standout track from the former, “So Long, Hello,” that’s anything but easy listening. She’s been compared to Norah Jones and Regina Spektor (she shares the two artists’ pop sensibility), but Darrow, even at a young age, seems willing to take chances.
Check out what many are calling “the Dallas phenom” tonight at the Cactus Cafe. You can get more information on the show and buy tickets, here.

Hello starts out as a poppy, Michelle Branch-inspired uplifting romp, with the song "Time" sounding as if it were ripped straight out of a Princess Diaries soundtrack. Darrow's a skilled vocalist—her potential shows as she discards her saccharine tone briefly during "Make the News" for a deeper, more soulful sound—but her offerings here are, for the most part, just not particularly interesting. For now, listening to Darrow's music is the equivalent of reading a list of her influences. As the album progresses, the list grows to staggering lengths, covering everyone from Norah Jones to Sarah McLachlan—enough so to make you want to hear the originals.
She's still in high school, so the young pop musician still clearly has plenty of time to ditch the overproduced generic pop. And her staggering talent suggests that she's got the potential to create something more memorable and personal down the line. Too bad she had to make this album first.

DALLAS — If you like Norah Jones, you'll love high school student Tiger Darrow. Darrow attends Booker T. Washington (like Jones) and officially releases her self-produced album You Know Who You Are on March 3. That's right, this high school sweetheart has already produced her own album: She wrote all the songs, played almost all of the instruments, recorded and engineered it herself, and created the artwork for You Know Who You Are. Whew.
What's more, You Know Who You Are is her second album of the year -- and it's only February. Her first, Hello, was produced by Cary Pierce and released in early January.
Darrow's CD release party on March 3 is in Austin, but Dallas music lovers can see (and hear!) her at Opening Bell March 9 and at the 35 Conferette in Denton on March 12. She's worth the wait.

Next, in the continuing series of follow-up articles for the What Music Means to Me Project, we turn our focus to Tiger Darrow. Usually, the last names of the participants are not revealed in order to help protect their privacy and because, in context of the project, their last name is not important to know. In this case, however, and as you will see, Tiger’s name is everywhere. And for good reason.
In the WMMTM Project, Tiger wrote that music is her sanctuary. She describes beautifully the sound of her cello resonating in the air as “wrapping me up in a blanket, comforting me, putting me in a cocoon and sheltering me, even if only for a little while.” Reflecting on what she wrote almost two years ago, very little has changed. “If anything, I rely upon music as my sanctuary even more today.”
Tiger’s real name is Jacqueline. At the tender age of three she decided that she wanted to become a veterinarian. After purusing a copy of National Geographic, she liked the sound of “tiger” better than her own name. So, without reservation, she announced to her parents that she wanted to be called “Tiger” from then on. The name stuck – it fits her perfectly.
Tiger is a very passionate artist and can be easily described as an artistic chameleon; you never know what she’s going to come up with next. She is a cellist, composer, singer-songwriter, producer, performing artist and movie actress. This year she will graduate from the prestigious Booker T. Washington High School of the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas and, like her classmates, is on the brink of beginning the next phase of her life.
Looking at Tiger’s many accomplishments and accolades to date, you would think she is already well into the “next phase of her life”. Her resumé is impressive. In January, 2011, Tiger released two solo albums: Hello, produced by and co-written with Cary Pierce of the group Jackopierce, and You Know Who You Are, produced by Tiger on her own label, Tiger Darrow Music (both available on iTunes). Regarding her music, she has been compared to Norah Jones and Regina Spektor. The Dallas Observer wrote that Tiger is “one to watch”, and she has been dubbed a “hot new artist” on the television show, Good Morning Texas.........

In her 18 years, Tiger Darrow's already accomplished far more than most other high school seniors can dream. The Booker T. Washington High School senior's already got a pretty substantial IMDB page thanks to her burgeoning acting career, and, last summer, Darrow, who also boasts some pretty fine indie-pop chops, even had a couple of scores pop up Robert Rodriguez's Machete -- in three different scenes, even (two featuring Jessica Alba, and another featuring Cheech Marin). Pretty decent filler for your college applications, no doubt.
But it's just the start, really: This month, Darrow released her debut full-length album, Hello, an effort that finds the young singer-songwriter working closely with Cary Piece of Jackopiece. Together, the two co-wrote the album -- and to impressive ends, showcasing a fairly brooding aesthetic mature well beyond Darrow's years.
That much is especially evident on the album's lead single, "Thinkin' Bout You," a song which also features some writing assistance from Oklahoma singer-songwriter Katie Mariah. It's also evident in the music video (also co-produced by Pierce), for which Darrow's acting chops surely also came in handy. Check the video out after the jump.

How about now? Do any modern local artists stand out in a similar way as your classics?
I always try to catch Ishi, who are so much fun to see and never fail to get the crowd dancing. I make great efforts to catch The Boom Boom Box, El Centro, RTB2, The Roomsounds, Smile Smile, Tiger Darrow and Whiskey Folk Ramblers whenever possible. I recently caught a show by the hip-hop group Gallery Cat and was really impressed.

Credit that much to Liles' ear for young talent. In just nine months, the venue has become home base for a whole roster of musicians like Washington. Among the Kessler's under-22-years-old regular performers: Emily Elbert, a finger-picking guitar virtuoso currently studying at Berklee like Washington before her; Hunter Hendrickson, the city's next great blues hope; pop-rock singer Tiger Darrow, whose music has already appeared in films such as the Robert Rodriguez-directed Machete; and 16-year-old fiddle wunderkind Ruby Jane, who, as the youngest-booked act at this past year's Austin City Limits Music Festival, became something of a darling from the weekend, invited to perform on stage alongside the likes of buzzing indie-rock outfit Local Natives and '90s still-arounds Blues Traveler.

DALLAS — There are overachievers in school – you know, those kids who ace every test and are part of every extracurricular activity available. Then there are kids like Tiger Darrow, who look like they go above and beyond but are talented enough to back it up.
The 17-year-old Darrow was raised in Austin for 13 years and then moved to Dallas three years ago. She attends Dallas’ famous arts magnet Booker T. Washington high school – home to alums like Erykah Badu and Norah Jones. An actress and multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter, Darrow is no stranger to the arts. At the age of 3, she began lessons on the violin and later progressed to cello, guitar, piano, and ukulele.
Over the summer, she interned with director Robert Rodriquez at Troublemaker Studios, where three of her own compositions were featured in Machete. She is currently helping Rodriquez with the score for Spy Kids 4.
Darrow’s website gives limited insight to her background and thoughts on her music, but PegNews was able to delve further into the life and music of the future superstar who will be opening for Edie Brickell’s band Heavy Make-up on Friday night at the Kessler in Oak Cliff.

And they all have the nascent cinematic chops of filmmakers far beyond their years ... which are 14, 16, and 16, respectively. Someday, after they thank the Academy and their families and their managers and their agents, they'll also have to acknowledge Austin's new School of Film & Media Arts Center. Alongside the likes of Seattle's 911 Media Arts Center and San Francisco's Bay Area Video Coalition, it's one of a handful of community-based nonprofit media-studies centers catering to the fertile, febrile minds of a generation of young people.

For no apparent reason, not one, but two Dallas-based musicians made contributions to Robert Rodriguez's latest film, Machete: 17-year-old Tiger Darrow, a burgeoning local pop artist and Rodriguez intern was afforded the opportunity to score three different scenes in the film, and local rocker Billy Blair, who has now appeared in a few Rodriguez movies, was cast as the guy who gets to kill Robert DeNiro's character.
We'll have more on Darrow in the coming weeks, but we recently sat down with Blair, who plays in the local bands Messer and White Collar Ghetto, the later of which performs at the House of Blues tonight, about his appearance in the film. - Dallas Observer
