THUNDERHAWKS: The sexually potent Chess Club champions
by: Tessa Jennison

There’s something to be said about a band whose Facebook description says “Chess Club Champions 2012”. Instantly upon reading that line, my mind recoiled to a distant memory (circa 1997) of the pre-pubescent version of my little brother, ego-fuelled and nostrils flaring, challenging his boyhood rival to a chess match at the Kitchener Public Library chess club.

In reality, outside of my weird and obscure co-relative memory bank, I doubt that Thunderhawks have anything to do with chess, and they probably just wrote that self-descriptor because they have fun and quirky senses of humor. Or they might be the Chess Club Champions of 2012. Anything is possible.

And yet another creative self-descriptor: “A conglomerate of filthy he-cougars bred and raised by wolf parents. Rabid and sexually potent, the five boys front a musical outlet that boasts bipolar melodies, half-hearted lulls, and a plethora of satanic chant; enough to entice unsuspecting youth into their sick, demented, sex cult.” Now these guys are a collection of highly motivated musicians with a solid work ethic (they also appear to be somewhat hygienic. Labelling themselves as “filthy” is certainly a stretch). Perhaps the intent of the misleading description is to enhance the band’s intrigue and allure, in a backlash to the over-saturation of metro fashions and meticulous hygienic practices that have been adopted by so many young men these days.

What is definitely true is that this band is hella-fun to listen to. If you want pulsing smack-you-in-the-face-with-awesome music, then listen to them. Or better yet, check them out live at the KOI Music Festival, which touches down in Kitchener from September 14-16. I’m listening to Thunderhawks as I write this, the music reviving memories of the dull throbbing pain and lingering bruises from crowd-surfing mishaps, recalling the eagerness to get back to the car post-show so I could pop in the cassette of the band I had just seen in an effort to savor the essence of the experience. All the while playing air guitar and singing at the top of my lungs into the night air of the urban streetscape.

Toronto-based Thunderhawks have recently signed with U.K. label Engineer Records, which is kind of a big deal. Their soon-to-be-released album Tongues will begin circulating in the U.K. and Japan later this month. Be sure to get your hands on this one.

"THUNDERHAWKS TO ROCK GEORGETOWN"

Open wide for the release of Thunderhawks newest record Tongues.
To promote the release of their newest EP, Thunderhawks will be rocking St. John’s United Church in Georgetown on Saturday July 9.
“We’re really excited, and we’re very proud of the album,” said Jeff Richards, front man of Thunderhawks.
Richards has been singing in the pop punk band since its inception in 2008. Although the band has experienced member changes, the five-piece Georgetown band is incredibly proud, and excited for the release of its second record.
Thunderhawks regularly perform across the GTA. With members from Gergetown and Acton, Thunderhawks released their first self-titled EP in March of 2009. They then embarked on their first tour of the Canadian east coast in July of last year.
“Starting off in a small town everyone knows you,” Richards said.
“There’s not really a lot to do, and when there is a show you get a lot of the same people coming out. Playing in small towns is way better than in a big cities. For some reason I find the smaller towns bring out the most people. They are always the ones to spread the word about your band.”
The band’s newest recording was recorded at Paragon Studios in Caledon. Richards said that this effort promises more structure, and more in-depth song writing.
“We came first on this record,” he said. “We started writing music so that when we play it, we enjoy it. Hopefully everyone else enjoys it too. Tongues is a lot easier to listen to, and every song is different. We’ve cut down on the riffs and focused more on the song writing itself.”
The July 9 concert will include support from Georgetown locals Half Beat, as well as Toronto band Teenage Kicks, and July. The evening promises to be a night of safe, fun, rock and roll in Georgetown.
“Georgetown shows are always incredible, and we’re hoping to make this one the best,” Richards said. “Just come and have fun because it’s going to be a great show to be a part of.”
Tickets are available at the door for this event, and through members of Thunderhawks.
Purchase Tongues at: http://thunderhawks.bandcamp.com.

"REVIEW"

Sew‘ is the first Thunderhawks track I’ve heard since 2011's EP ‘Tongues‘. When I heard ‘Tongues‘ originally, I thought Thunderhawks had raised the bar with their great new tunes. Then, I heard ‘Sew‘ and found that they have raised the bar once again.

‘Sew‘ is definitely something to look forward to as a Thunderhawks fan, or as a punk rock fan in general. The upbeat track occasionally reminds me of the fast-paced ‘No Killin’‘ from their previous EP, but the similarities end there. The track is a product of natural progression on the bands part; it retains the great ‘call-out’ lyrics Thunderhawks are fantastic at, with catchy guitar licks as the glue that holds the song together and as usual, they manage to keep it interesting. This new track is the most accessible Thunderhawks track today. It sticks on the first listen, and gets better after every time. It really does come across as a refined sound on their part and its unique enough to hear it once and say ‘Yep, that’s the Thunderhawks.’

Previously, Jeff Richards showcased his vocal chops on tracks ‘Met You on the Bottle‘ and ‘Casket Hash‘. This is another one of those tunes. Richards carries the song with relatable lyrics like the tracks chorus line ‘Say hello / and I’ll greet you there when you grow a backbone’ that are delivered with ease. Rory Glaskill and Mitchell Dunn provides great guitar work as usual, including a ‘down-beat’ bridge that hasn’t been seen in any Thunderhawks songs to date, but it totally works. Chris Payne’s bass tone holds the track together, and his three seconds to shine are awesome.

‘Sew‘ is one of the best Thunderhawks tracks to date and is bound to be a staple in their live sets.
Fans can look forward to the public release of the track this weekend.

TL;DR – Despite recent line-up changes, Thunderhawks know how to keep their punk rock sound premium. The band hails from Georgetown, Ontario and you can bet this track will be on every Georgetown kid’s summer playlist.
9/10 - Mike Stevens

Thunderhawks are a band from Georgetown, Ontario that I have been following for quite a while. They’ve been dipping in and out of the scene over the last few years, likely to focus on writing great new songs like this one. Just released, “SEW” is an upbeat, fun, yet mature track full of energy. I would compare these guys to the up-tempo of Four Year Strong, with a dash of Boys Night Out, crossed with the pushy vocals of Josh Ramsay from Mariana’s Trench. The vocals start out strong and finish strong. The ascending bridge is quite dynamic and adds a nice touch. Keep an eye out for these guys. If they keep writing songs like this, they’ll be big in no time!

"SEW SONG REVIEW"

It’s not everyday that I get to wake up to an insane earjam, and when I say insane, I mean this band will blow your mind in front of your face. Mass insanity. Lucky for me, my pals in Georgetown’s finest, THUNDERHAWKS, have let me in on an exclusive listening party for their new track, “Sew”, which they will be releasing this fine Easter weekend. So before you eat your Turkey/Ham/Tofurky/whatever the hell you eat on Easter – drop your forks and knives, and give this shit a listen.

Right off the bat, you experience an instant spine-chilling vocal intro by frontman Jeff Richards, followed by a seriously catchy, up-beat guitar riff. Throughout the song, you can hear the crunchy tones and killer drumming patterns through every transition, giving the track some depth and climax. Aside from the musical aspect of the song, it is a lyrical masterpiece. And I’m not talking about some Disney inspired crap where every line rhymes, or reminds us what day of the week it is (duh, it’s Friday), I mean a serious, in-depth monologue. Thunderhawks has, once again, stepped up to the plate and delivered us a Grand Slam to the face.

So yeah, if you’re reading this and you’re interested in having some good listening on Easter weekend, you can tune into their Facebook page at the link below. - LIVE MUSIC TORONTO

Thunderhawks are a punk-rock band out of the small town of Georgetown Ontario, Canada. Since their beginning in 2008, the 'hawks have independently released two EP's. Their self-titled debut release THUNDERHAWKS: 2008, and follow up release Tongues: 2011 have both had great success in the local and Canadian pop punk/punk-rock scene. Collectively selling over 2000 copies and earning them a spot in the Myspace top 10 Punk Rock chart for a consecutive 3 months in 2010. Thunderhawks are no stranger to the public after sharing the stage with the likes of: The Flatliners, The Snips, Baptized in Blood, Teenage Kicks, Shotgun Rules, This is a Standoff, Hollerado, Listener, The Artist Life and Touring the East coast of Canada with A Sight For Sewn Eyes in the summer of 2010. Although Thunderhawks have seen trials such as member changes, they have shown no signs of stopping with a new two track release coming late fall/early winter of 2011. With their already large, dedicated fan-base, Thunderhawks are dedicated to getting their music into new ears and never slowing down.
