This The Rescue

With most of the music coming out these days focusing on the negative, its refreshing to find a band crafting music that is full of hope and optimism. Westminster, Maryland collective This The Rescue are that refreshing exception. Their debut full length, We Were Ghosts, is one of the most delightful and uplifting albums released in quite some time. The 11 song album flows beautifully and effortlessly along, with the incredible production of lead singer/guitarist Jake Dougherty and mixing by Bryan Laurenson (States, ex-Copeland) that brings each individual track to life. Full of lush harmonies, beautiful piano, intricate guitars, pulsating drums and the incredible croon of singer Jake Dougherty, We Were Ghosts is a heavily layered album that never feels overcrowded or chaotic.

We Were Ghosts opens with “Home” a powerful tune that sets the stage perfectly for the rest of the album. Right from the beginning the optimism shines bright, as Jake wastes little time letting the listener know they are not alone as he sings “No one here is letting go/And I’m still holding on like hope”. From there, the listener is taken on a sonic journey incorporating everything from soft, acoustic driven numbers (the incredible “Hello, November”) to piano-fueled rockers (“Trouble”). The marvelous “Something’s Got to Change” shows TTR channeling their inner-Acceptance, with near perfect results. The poppy “Catch Your Breath” is a radio-ready single, and sure to be a crowd pleaser. I can already hear the sing-alongs from the sold out arenas surely to come.

The final four tracks of the album are the most diverse and experimental, and its there that the band are at their best. ”Low” is a powerful mid-tempo tune. As Jake Dougherty sings “Raise your weary head/you’ve been found/Lift up your voice/you will find if/raise your weary head youve been found/youre such a lovely soul” you cant help but feel happy and full of hope. I think Jake put it best when he said “We are beautiful souls waiting to be made beautiful…Those of us that believe we are wretched need to be reminded that we are beautiful…”. Following “Low” is the gorgeous “Still Dreaming”, one of the more dynamic and different songs on the album, starting soft and gradually building to a lush harmonic outro that flows perfectly into ”Silhouettes”, an incredible, piano-fueled tune that is one of the more intimate feeling songs on the album. We Were Ghosts concludes with “Rise”, a marvelous acoustic number complete with hand claps, that is written to hope itself. An absolute perfect end to an incredible album.

This The Rescue are on top of their game with this release. The instrumentation is extraordinary, the lyrics are inspiring and full of hope, in particular when up against adversity and tragedy, and Jake Dougherty’s vocals are absolutely incredible, as his dynamic range gives each song its own unique feel. With We Were Ghosts, This The Rescue have successfully filled the void left by Copeland and Acceptance, something the music world desperately needs. This is one band whose future is as bright and full of hope as their music.
