"EasternSurf.com Album Review"

Listen if you like: Sublime, Pennywise, or any other punk, reggae, and ska band mixing the three elements into a head-nodding, party-starting concoction.

First impressions: The song titles on Here On The South Shore We Treat Friends Mo Bettah give it all away: “LBI Mike Reggae Party,” “Submarine Surf Party,” “More Beer Party,” “Billy Don’t Surf,” “Dawn Patrol.” But that’s OK. For a certain segment of music fans, there’s nothing for comforting than a pinch of thrash punk, a touch of surf rock, and some dancehall-worthy horns spicing up your post-surf party. And Long Beach, NY’s, The Shipwrecks deliver those fun-loving goods in spades.

The nitty-gritty: “Submarine Surf Party” and “Cowboy Surf” do the ‘50s surf-noir thing perfectly, while “Funky Bikini Monkey” is vintage early Fishbone or Red Hot Chili Peppers and “Do The Barnacle” reminded me of Butthole Surfers on vacation. I don’t know if “LBI Mike Reggae Party” was addressed to Hurricane Sandy, but the full-throated lyrics about “weathering this storm” probably hit home whenever The Shipwrecks perform for their local Long Beach fans. You can’t go wrong with hilarious novelty tracks like “Steamy Goes To The Zoo” and “Kook Boot.” And I’m just praying that, if the ASP World Tour ever comes back to Long Beach, Mick Fanning and crew get a personal rendition of “Aussie Anthem.”

Other recommended tracks: Like angry Pennywise-style ragers? “More Beer Party” and the far-too-brief “Dawn Patrol” will do the trick. If you’re looking for melodic punk a la Face To Face or Strung Out, “Bar Cabbage” will bring a grin to your face — consider the dub breakdown a special surprise. In fact, I thought the reggae-heavy moments on Here On The South Shore… (“Mexico,” “LBI Mike Reggae Party,”) represented The Shipwrecks at their best.
East Coast tour dates? Plenty in and around the Northeast: January 17th in Franklin Square, NY; January 18th in Ludlow, VT; January 27th in Asbury Park, NJ; January 31st in Hampton Bays, NY; February 13th in Brooklyn, NY; February 23rd in Patchogue, NY; March 8th in Freeport, NY; and April 19th in Amityville, NY. Over the past six and a half years the band has played from Manhattan to Montauk and everywhere in between including the inaugural CBGB Festival in 2012. The band has played many family friendly events such as being official on course entertainment at the 2016 NYC Marathon, Riis Park Beach Bazaar in Queens, and many charity events for children with special needs in and around Long Beach, NY.  They have also played regionally at the Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg, PA; the Launch Music Conference and Festival in Lancaster, PA; Dark City Entertainment's Happy Monday's at Wonderbar in Asbury Park; the Jersey Shore Music Festival in Seaside Heights, NJ; as well as a regular slot in Ludlow, VT during the 2013 winter season. The band got the opportunity of a lifetime when Live Nation invited them to headline the Gramercy Theatre in Manhattan on St Patrick's Day 2014. They have been fortunate to share the stage with some of the nations top acts including The Aggrolites, Smash Mouth, Mephiskapheles, Badfish (Tribute to Sublime), The Scofflaws, The Toasters, The Pietasters, Big D and the Kids Table, members of Wu-Tang Clan and more.
