UK DJ duo Rokit & Sir Olly AKA The Royal We are here on a mission: To import their raw, down-n-dirty, grittily groovy, electro-rock sound from their home country - a sound that hasn’t come close to the Golden Coast.
Brought up on a solid English diet of countryside raves, sweaty rock joints, and throbbing afterhours clubs, The Royal We formed in Los Angeles when they realized that something was lacking on the Cali dance-floors. It was the sound they had heard up and down their home country, and honed through almost a decade of DJing across Europe, but which was strangely missing in their new city. It linked rock fans, disco freaks, electro-heads and pop-pushers alike, forming the bond between Eastside hipsters, Westside divas, and those down the middle who just wanted a good night out to dance.
That sound fuses indie rock with electronic, eighties with cutting edge, classics with remixes, forming fresh and funky, dirty and danceable music that everyone can enjoy. They innovatively create live mash-ups and drop huge acapellas, jamming together the likes of La Roux, Daft Punk, Laidback Luke and Digitalism with New Order, Florence & The Machine, Miike Snow and the Ting Tings, building upon years of experience to rock dance-floors from coast to coast.
Together, the duo have forged their reputation on stages across the world - Sir Olly playing at black tie balls and Shut Up and Dance gigs on the UK club scene, spinning to thousands next to the Stanton Warriors, Bloc Party, Pendulum (he even filled in for the Klaxons when they failed to show for a gig), while Rokit was holding down a regular slot at the infamous Ministry of Sound, London, and jamming out remixes on top of covering for his day job as a music head-honcho for Mondo Records and marketing guru at RCA Records. He was listed in DJ Magazine as a DJ to watch, while Sir Olly, on the back of smashing it to 3,000 people open-air in the Alps as the official BUSC ski trip DJ, was named top DJ by Varsity magazine.
The Royal We began their takeover of the LA club scene with their regular Tuesday night ‘C U Next Tuesday’, at The Saint in Hollywood, convincing crowds that ‘Tuesday is the new Saturday’, which was soon featured in LA Magazine as one of ‘25 Great Nights Out In Los Angeles’ (October 2010). They combined this with their monthly residency at the biggest gallery at the Downtown Artwalk, Bang Gallery; pounding the Polska at the LA Polish Festival 2010; and rocking Echo Park and Downtown parties, including Akbar and Dinner House M ‘Controlled Substance’ nights, starting a revolution in the LA club scene.
Now they have a host of gigs lined up, a set of juicy remixes in the pipeline, and thousands of club kids hungry for a new sound to their nights out, the scene is set for The Royal We to go majestic. With their infectious brand of unique, sizzling, distinct dance music, playing songs you love in a way you’ve never heard before, they are ready to erupt onto the LA scene and change the way you move. Forever.
