The N Result blend rock and hip-hop for a truly unique musical experience. Bringing to mind the Black Eyed Peas with their alternating singing and rapping style and catchy hooks, the six-piece band crosses multiple genres. Having opened for Ryan Leslie, Motion City Soundtrack and Pharrell Williams of N.E.R.D. and currently receiving quite a buzz by music fans and record executives alike, The N Result are well on their way.
Their soulful, danceable tracks demonstrate their versatility and it's hardly a surprise to learn that lead guitarist Dan Bascom studies jazz while drummer Nate Sankary is a prolific classical musician. Not to mention, MC Chase Innis' catchy rhymes have led him to share the stage with Grammy Award-winning hip-hop artist Speech of Arrested Development. And that's only half the band.
Lead singer/guitarist Ross Lippencott has released three independent solo albums and currently studies music at Rutgers University while keyboarist Eitan Levine combines jazz and funk for a truly fun experience and bassist Bobby Tarantino doubles on acoustic upright bass at venues like the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and WBGO 88.3 FM in Newark, N.J. A band of All Stars isn't too far from the truth.
The band's debut album, Lines is a solid release of 12 high-energy songs. Starting off with upbeat track "On My Shoulders," the listener quickly realizes the depth to The N Result. Singer Lippencott and MC Innis trade lines back and forth throughout the album at an enjoyable pace while each song mixes catchy beats alongside their vocals. Slower tracks like "Complicated" showcase the band's continuing versatility while "So Unsure" has seductive Latin roots accompanied by light percussion, guitars and keyboard. Title track, "Lines" is undeniably catchy and will no doubt have the listener tapping along.
The N Result recently won a Taylor Guitars and Elixir Strings contest where they were awarded recording time at a marquee studio. With Lines, New Brunswick, NJ-bred band The N Result pops and punks its way through a twelve-track trek–even surprising with doses of soul, hip-hop, and blues.
Unsurprisingly, the members are as diverse as the music.
“It’s a natural result of putting six people from different backgrounds together,” says Ross Lippencott, vocalist, guitarist, and manager for the band.
That organic, DIY-tune pervades most of the disc’s space–but like others under the radar, the band yearns for bigger, better things. On the aptly-titled “Hollywood,” Lippencott and MC Chase Innis consider an oft-illusory dream: fame. Between booking Greyhounds, Lippencott laments, “I ain’t got a leading lady of my own.” It’s the least of his worries–and he knows it. “On My Shoulders,“ Lines’ defiant opening track, casts a shadow on record labels and routines, the “weight of the world” and “dark days” coming to a head at the hands of drummer Nate Sankary and guitarist Dan Bascom’s Santana-strength riffs. Earlier this year, Taylor Guitars and Elixir Strings® partnered up to give one lucky band or artist the ultimate in guitars and strings. Musicians who had registered with SonicBids.com were invited to TestDrive 2009, a “fan-favorite” contest that would award five select artists with Taylor SolidBody guitars and Elixir strings and cables. One overall winner would be awarded recording time at a marquee studio, offering a chance to show off their musical prowess with their new Taylor guitars.
Out of 2,000 entrants, 25 were voted into the semifinals, and of those 25, five finalists were chosen by the Taylor Guitars and Elixir Strings Artist Relations teams. The five finalists were: power-rockers The Better World, singer-songwriter Matt Duke, genre-crossing band The N Result, modern pop act Kenotia, and energetic rockers Facing Forward. In the end, it was the New Brunswick, New Jersey-based band The N Result that took the top prize. Comprised of members Ross Lippencott (lead vocals, guitar), Dan Bascom (guitar), Bobby Tarantino (bass), Eitan Levine (keyboard), Nate Sankary (drums) and Chase Innis (MC), the two-year-old band has amassed a strong following both on campus at Rutgers University, where most of the band are students, and along the East Coast, including New York City.
“We are so excited to record,” Lippencott exclaimed upon hearing the news that his band had won. “We have a lot of new stuff that’s going to sound really good on our Elixir-equipped Taylors.”
As part of the competition, each band was asked to make a video showing how they were using the products. Lippencott and his bandmates decided to make a full-scale, heist-themed music video featuring their song “Break it Down” off the group’s debut album, Lines.
“We wanted to portray how we felt about having premium products and what it means to an emerging band like ours to get this opportunity,” Lippencott explains. “As it’s something we value so much, we wanted to create a video that was a throwback to the great stories of thievery, like an Ocean’s Eleven or The Italian Job. We actually contacted a museum we know, and they graciously let us use their space. On the wall there were super expensive paintings, and the thought of putting the guitar in a glass case just seemed like such a cool idea.”
At the end of the video, the band added the Taylor and Elixir logos and the tagline, “Don’t be caught without them,” because as Lippencott shares, “as an artist, you don’t want to be caught without a Taylor.”
