Burlington band Them Thieves is ready to showcase new songs in its latest album, which the band hopes will garner attention as well as provoke thought.
Them Thieves started forming in 2009 when Daniel Peachy, guitarist and keyboardist, started writing songs and joined forces with Brennan Conry, bass guitarist, and Nick Ginn, drummer. They spent the next two years looking for a singer to suit the songs. In 2011, Them Thieves found its vocalist: Trevor Walroth.
“We had a hard time finding a singer with the right sound,” said Peachy. “Trevor was the perfect fit. Four months later, we went to a cottage in Quebec and spent eight days recording our first album.”
The album, aptly named The Cabin, was released in 2012 and featured the band’s songs accumulated over the two previous years.
“We went to a cabin because there would be less distractions and we could focus,” explained Peachy. “It was in a remote area, quiet. The cottage was rustic with no running water. It was like living 100 years ago. It gives you a strong work ethic, so we called the album after the cottage.”
The band’s new album, And Then They Came For Us, was a collaborative effort and the outcome was so successful, Peachy is planning for further collaboration in the future.
“What everyone brings to the table takes it up an extra notch,” he said. “I think the most fun part of being in a band is exploring each other’s ideas.”
Them Thieves started recording its second full-length release last August in School House Studios and is now in the final stages of recording.
“I would call it hard core if I had to pick a genre,” noted Peachy. “But there are so many influences like rock, classical, blues, jazz, some electronic music and hip hop elements. It’s diverse without being all over the place.”
As for what the band is writing about, Peachy said it is up to the listener to decide.
“I think a lot of art, not just music, seems stale and just about giving everyone what they want. I want to challenge our audiences and give them something they didn’t realize they wanted. We want to appease audiences but we want to try be something original. I’m my own worst critic and I think we did a great job recording this album.”
With this album, the band plans to target agencies in the hopes of signing to a label.
“There is a sense of urgency in the lyrics and album style,” said Peachy. “There’s an underlying element that we need to make something happen. We plan to release the album and shop it to agencies and anyone who will help us spread it. We love what we do and we will keep doing it even if it is just for fun. No one will stop us from what we are doing as a band.”
