"A magical, mystical moment of Modern Heartness is how I would describe my first encounter with one of my latest musical infatuations. THE PERFORMANCE… was perfection. The band as a unit was tight, the songs were technically flawless, evocative, embracing and delivered with a sincere passionate energy. ...this album could easily hold it’s own note for note with any of it’s contemporaries holding court on mainstream radio."

"Big Music Fest - Breaking Bands 2014"

Big Music Fest is past tense now. But not for The Modern Hearts. They came out victorious in a giant battle of the bands consisting of around 1600 entrants. 25 semifinalists and 1 winner. The Modern Hearts are a Toronto based band which I had spun on the indie show. I also had them in the studio to chat before this competition. The interview is posted under the video. They’re a great group of guys with no big attitudes… I have also included links to their online sites.

"The Modern Hearts - Into the Wild"

A magical, mystical moment of Modern Heartness is how I would describe my first encounter with one of my latest musical infatuations. The Modern Hearts were the featured artist at The Landmark Events Showcase at The Tattoo Rock Parlour on April 26th, 2014.

Although I had not heard any of their music before, I felt a familiar sense of alt/pop comfort that had a fresh breath of life blown into it. So it was simultaneously able to attach itself to all those known emotions and reach in and shake loose some new feels I hadn’t felt yet. THE PERFORMANCE…. was perfection. The band as a unit was tight, the songs were technically flawless, evocative, embracing and delivered with a sincere passionate energy. What more could a potential fangirl ask from a band the first time she sees them play?

RESEARCH TIME!!! (They only call it stalking when it’s not your job.) So, I hit all the usual suspects. Into The Wild is where I ventured. I stayed for awhile. A LOOONG long while. Not that I am willing to confess my age, BUT, if I had been a teenager in the 80′s a few of the songs might have unleashed a beast from the cage of nostalgia. Only hypothetically speaking of course. Nostalgia notwithstanding, this album could easily hold it’s own note for note with any of it’s contemporaries holding court on mainstream radio.

The title track itself delivers musically all that one might envision while contemplating the words “Into The Wild”. The song is an adventure that sweeps you up into it’s grasp and runs.

If I didn’t already know “How To Love“, I would volunteer as tribute to learn from The Modern Hearts. This song is by far my absolute favourite song on the album. Currently it is holding firm in my top spot for most listened to daily. There are maybe a handful of songs that I can listen to exhaustively. Intermittently over periods of time seems to be my musical modus operandi . There is always another band and another song….why be bored? How to Love I can’t STOP listening to. It is musically, lyrically and emotionally engaging in all the right ways. In absolutely every way.

As difficult as it was to press on, I did listen to the rest of the album. I don’t have one bad thing to say about any song on the album, however I do have my favourites. “Change” being another brilliant stand out contribution. Added to the musical library of songs I can count on to reach those deep sensitive and quiet places that only a song like Change can find. “Dream Chaser” was another one I felt hard pressed to not put on perma-repeat. Mostly because it was the song from the live performance that had the most profound and lasting impact. And doesn’t every girl want to hear a song like “All I Want Is You“. Not that I would ever admit to having a mushy romantic side, but if I did, a beast of a different cage would have been unleashed. Only hypothetically speaking of course.

The next time I would see them perform would be at the Opera House on June 6th, 2014. The performance delivered exactly at the same level of high powered fire I had previously enjoyed, but now I knew the music more intimately. I was able to anticipate those gripping moments in my favourite songs. I was able to sing along, and you can bet your sweet sugar cookies I did. The first beat of How To Love lifting both my feet from the floor and the corners of my lips into a giant happy girl grin. Did I dance….. you can bet your sweet sugar cookies I did.

"The Modern Hearts Are A Thriving Rock And Roll Sound!"

FORKSTER SAYS On: Black Sheep Records Recording Artist, The Modern Hearts
FORKSTER immediately heard ‘The Modern Hearts’ music impact him with ‘full music flavour & full music favour’. These rockers are delivering catchy upbeat tunes with ‘class music diversities’ from rock, pop and alternative rock genres. The vocals were smooth with fantastic tones and vibrant airs, the guitar riffs were absolutely ‘gliding & sliding’ with brilliant rock atmospheric punches, the stickman was wailing out the beats with driving rhythms and grooving tempos and piano playing exhibitions were really glowing and had vibrant definitions throughout.

I absolutely admired the total bands musicianship unity that I could feel throughout their rocking music! They are not only a band but a family and welcome others important around them into their rocking community as well and FORKSTER is all about that rocking respect for each other. The Modern Hearts are a true rock talent and FORKSTER wishes them amazing successes on their new roads ahead!

Bio

The Modern Hearts, with a signature sound built upon a foundation of hook-filled guitar pop and soaring vocals, are poised to win over fans and critics alike with their new EP, World's On Fire. The irresistible single, “Want You So Bad,” released in the summer of 2015, kicks things off, clearly displaying how far The Modern Hearts have come as radio-savvy hit-makers in a short period of time.

The Toronto-based quartet consisting of lead vocalist/synth and rhythm guitarist Gary Stitt, lead guitarist and harmony vocalist Steve Wilde, bassist Jason Sulyma, and drummer A.J. Pinsonneault, began making their mark at the start of 2014 with their self-released full-length debut album Into The Wild.

On the strength of that record’s “world class songs that draw from classic and modern influences,” in the words of Last Gang Entertainment founder Chris Taylor, The Modern Hearts beat out 1600 other artists to win that year’s Breaking Bands competition, sponsored by Big Music Fest in Kitchener, Ontario, and a place on the festival’s bill alongside Aerosmith, Bryan Adams, Slash, and other rock giants.

As more warmly received performances increased that momentum, The Modern Hearts returned to the studio in 2015 with JUNO Award-winning producer and engineer Dan Brodbeck (Dolores O’Riordan, The Gandharvas, The Salads) to lay down “Want You So Bad,” released in time for the band’s return to Big Music Fest, followed by a tour of western Canada.

The upcoming EP's other songs—“Show Me Love,” and “World’s On Fire”—reflect an equal amount of craftsmanship and sonic diversity, and a desire to focus on the best material on hand, polished until perfected.

The Modern Hearts’ evolution is sure to take a huge leap forward with World's On Fire as the band’s songwriting and live show have coalesced into a movement with undeniable appeal. As Canadian broadcasting legend Alan Cross said of The Modern Hearts, “Watch this band. They have the songs, the chops and the smarts to be a factor.”
