The Midnight Kicks

The Midnight Kicks have recorded the first multi-genre EP of their career, combining classic "Queen" dynamics and today's Top 40 energy into an aggressively smooth sound that has the Chicago-land area by the ear. Drama queens, glamour, and revenge are only a few subjects that are brought to life in the band's "So Pretty - EP".

Upon listening to their EP entitled "So Pretty", you'll feel like the summer season of fun and excitement has been extended, especially on the musically-chill, lyrically-encouraging track “You’re Somebody”. According to the band’s Soundcloud page, the band’s sound is recommended for fans of Top 40 music like Bruno Mars and One Republic and traces of such artists can be found in the four-song EP. No, it’s not the candy pop “put your hands up” kind of Top 40 music; The Midnight Kicks are a band that stick to their instruments. Although, they’d fit in the more alternative pop-rock realm with bands like Maroon 5.

Lyrically, the EP doesn’t possess the over-complexity that some veteran acts of the industry have, but the lyrics remain focused on the subjects and are performed with impressive swagger and confidence. “Mr. Capone” can easily be considered the standout track as it is the one track on the album where a girl isn’t the main subject; it's an ominous revenge song toward the song’s namesake, made all the more menacing with the use of piano on the track. The track “Drama Queen” seems to be a fan favorite. With a catchy chorus and vocals that emulate Freddie Mercury, "Drama Queen" is destined to captivate.

"So Pretty" is the title track of the EP, and by far the most electronic. The verses are lightly engaged with high popping synth, which is then brought to life with heaviness and aggression during the chorus. Club-like drumming give the song the mood it deserves, especially when the lyrics "I see you dancing, you drop-dead looks machine" are presented.
