Meet The Little Black Dress. And, while you’re at it, prepare yourself for every future article on this up and coming Toronto band to scream loudly about just how “essential”, “classic”, “must have” (and any other fashion related terminology you can think of!) they are when talking about them. Although those descriptions may be true, in my mind using “little black dress” analogies is a little gimmicky: something The LBD is far from.
Comprised of singer/guitarist frontman Dan Sadowski, guitarist Brian Seligman, drummer Lewis Spring, and bass player Damian Dobrowolski, The LBD are a pop rock fusion group with a sound reminiscent of Maroon 5.
Formerly one of Toronto’s best kept secrets, The LBD have been garnering a much larger reaching fanbase thanks, in part, to frontman Sadowski’s constant touring this year as guitarist for Jesse Labelle. That exposure, in combination with some high intensity shows at The Rivoli in Toronto, and an upcoming appearance in the Barrie New Music Fest, has really put the group at the forefront of new Canadian music.
Their latest track Call The Paparazzi showcases an ability to create radio-friendly music without having to sellout their sound, which is where many talented Canadian bands and artists seem to fall short. It’s a tightrope of continuing to please the fans who have been there since inception while developing a sound that is accessible to a larger public, allowing for national success. With this latest song, The LBD may just be on to a winner.
As I mentioned, The LBD will perform as part of the Barrie New Music Fest this Thursday night at the Foxx Lounge, downtown Barrie. Expect an energetic show that will have you jumping up and down and, perhaps, moving your hips a bit, even if you tend to be the person who keeps a post holding up the bar at events like this. Yes, I may be speaking from experience. Check out their new single below and let me know what you think, as well as joining me this Thursday night! - 107.5 Kool FM

The singer was captivating up on stage, and off when he'd jump into the cult fans to sing to the crowd. He was such a natural frontman.. actually natural is something I would say about each member of the band on stage, and I don't know if it's because of this but I felt like I knew them somehow while I watched, although the names and faces close up don't seem as familiar. There was just this strong comfort level between them and the audience and it really brought a warmth to each song that drew you in like a big bear hug. - MusicSheBlogged

"The Little Black Dress is a fusion of everything you've ever wanted in a band, and more. Heavy hitting drums, ridiculously tight bass lines, carefully crafted guitar, and soaring vocals to top off the mix... With the Strut EP coming out in the Fall, get ready to rock. Their music is as sexy, sultry, and classy as a bombshell redhead in a little black dress." - Mikey Reale
A little black dress is every girl’s “must have,” up-to-date item positioned at the front of her closet. It can be dressed up or dressed down, but regardless, it’s a timeless piece, never forgotten. And no matter what, you know it will always look just so damn good. It’s no surprise then, that the band The Little Black Dress chose this to be their name. Opening for another Toronto-based band at Queen Street’s well-known hotspot, the Rivoli, The Little Black Dress stole my ears for an hour in time.
I came in mildly skeptical, as I am of most new bands. Call me a music snob, or a skeptic at large, but regardless, any cynicism I had towards this new band was washed away within minutes. Surrounded by sweater vests, scruffy beards, and studded belts, the crowd had a very upbeat, granola, hipster vibe to it. The warmth that emanated from the venue floated just above the heads of the musicians and audience, who knew almost all of the words to every song played. At first, I was shocked at how large of a following there was. However, it became progressively clearer, as did the amount of talent that The Little Black Dress encompasses. Dan Sadowski, the band’s lead singer, announced at the beginning of the concert that he was feeling somewhat ill, as he proceeded to guzzle a bottle of honey. Even under the weather, though, his voice remained strong: neither guttural, nor nasal, Dan’s voice was audibly delicious, reminding me a lot of Bradley Nowell of Sublime. The songs themselves sounded like a cross between Sublime and Maroon 5.
The pulse of the band, however, was drummer Lewis Spring, who took each song to a new level. The chemistry between the band members, musically and performance-wise, was clear to see, yet, the drums unmistakably brought each rhythm and melody together cohesively and flawlessly. This being said, the other musicians in the band did not disappoint, and all played a large role in the energy that radiated from the stage and among the crowd.
My favourite song of the night, “Paparazzi,” oozed catchiness the minute the beat dropped, giving the audience a peek at what could clearly be hit single material. With an edgy rock’n’roll vibe, their song “Rouge” was a crowd pleaser and had my hips swaying, my hands clapping, and my mind briefly — and secretly — wishing I had red hair.
Targeting a pop meets rock’n’roll meets ska market, The Little Black Dress seems to have found a clever niche for breaking into the biz. With a solid batch of original songs and stage talent galore, the potential for the band is plentiful. And just like the name, The Little Black Dress will surely be a must-have item, never forgotten, and will always look just so damn good! - MONDOmagazine - Sara Starkman
