"Review - Cherry Bar"

Support band The Latonas prepare the crowd, which proves to be a healthy turnout by anyone’s standards. As soon as one band member admits they’ve penned a song called ‘Sex With Hound’, it’s apparent The Latonas have already given tonight’s headliners the thumbs-up. There are three alternating vocalists up there, the red-haired lad faring best tonight. Drummer Michael Rourke looks a little Josh Homme (if you squint) and you could do far worse than stumbling upon this unruly style of ramshackle indie rock next time The Latonas hit your hood. - music.com.au

"Apple Artist of the Week"

The Latonas are a high energy, catchy as fuck alternative indie rock band who pride themselves on their rowdy and engaging live performances with a side dish of humorous personal jokes that would finish off Keith Richards and convert Tom Cruise back to normality (…). Notable venues that have hosted these lads include the Corner Hotel, Prince Bandroom, Revolver, the Tote, and the Espy; the Latonas have also taken their travelling freak show to Sydney as part of the One Love & Peace festival and the Fly the Flag Festival in Perth, while being accepted to play the annual Kansai Music Conference in Osaka, Japan in September 2011, and being short listed for the Black Cat Festival in China as well as being on the Stand By list for Indie Week in Toronto.

In this time, the Latonas have also shared the stage with acts such as Tim Rogers (You Am I), Wolf & Cub, Mark Seymour, British India, The Screaming Jets, Midnight Youth as well as other popular Australian bands such as Loon Lake, Alpine & JJJ Unearthed winners The Owls. They also get to play each week with great bands like In Tongues, SeeSaw, The Corsairs, This is a Sickness, Ships Piano, The Corsairs, The Run Run, Going Swimming and lots of other awesome bands going around Melbourne.

Simultaneously to the above, The Latonas have recorded and released two EP’s at Revolver and the Ding Dong Lounge to rave review, as well as most recently launching double A side single ‘This Is Low/Nightlife’ in August 2012 at Revolver, in a midst of beach balls and a Party Stage.

Other ground breaking ventures include a unique and audacious attempt to ascend Mt.Everest only on hands whilst all four band members were tied together with their feet in the air, appearing on the Front Cover of Melbourne’s Transit newspaper Mx (circulation of over 300,000), regurlar interviews and airplay on PBS Radio, SYN FM and Channel 31 TV, as well as the video clip for ‘Protoro’ featured in Skiing Magazine videos (Boulder, Colorado) as well as on GuitarShop Tv.

The ‘Protoro’ video clip was also featured on renowned worldwide music magazine NME’s website late in 2011- http://bit.ly/PIKUuA! The Latonas were also Sonic Bids Artist of the Week in June 2011 and ‘The Morning After’ (off debut EP ‘Missiles), stayed at number 1 for three months on international music site7161.com!

""Best Indie Bands 2011""

We have 12 amazing, talented bands / artists for you to view. There is an excellent cross
section of music from a variety of genres.
This is where music is at it’s best. Bands giving it EVERYTHING they have got. Pure
passion and full of expression. In a brutal cut throat industry, who will make it? It is my hope,
that they all will!

The Latonas are an exciting four-piece, blending catchy guitar melodies, explosive
drums and a three pronged vocal line up.
The Latonas started out in 2007 as a high school band hailing from Mentone,
Melbourne.
Due to their influences from bands such as The Beatles, Kings of Leon, Black Rebel
Motorcycle Club, a very unique sound was beginning to develop and grow. With
each new song, they got stronger and better to the point that the song "The Morning
After" reached number one in a UK Indie Chart.
With 2 EP’s already cut and having played some of the best establishments in
Melbourne, The Latonas are quickly making a name for themselves.
The Latonas video “Protoro” was also featured on Television, Channel 31 and was
greeted with a huge response.

"Australia ( and now the World) Loves The Latonas"

One of the greatest moments of working on Tranquilizer Records is when you find a band that you would have NEVER found in a traditional way. This fun loving band is from Australia and I’ll let their videos speak for them.

Although Protoro was the song that got me hooked, I don’t think there is one song I don’t like from this band.

You can check out their official page HERE, Facebook, and woohoo Free Tunes

"The Latonas"

Stepping into what looks like the Melbourne bayside version of Ryan’s pool house from the O.C, I interrupt The Latonas kicking a battered soccer ball around a dishevelled room that Amy Winehouse would have been quite comfortable lighting up in. On the wall is a stolen street sign for Latona Street, and that’s my first question answered.

The four boys, Michael, Dave, Pat and Ben have come some way since their early days of playing to four drunken gamblers at the hallowed Swan Hotel in Richmond. They have since become StreetParty mainstays at 161, Rats, Laundry and pretty much any event in Melbourne curated by Hugh Waters. The band released their debut, self-titled EP at Ding Dong Lounge in May and soon followed that with the video for their first single, You Know You’re Wrong.

Taking time out from building a local fan base the equivalent size to an indie dance orc army, The Latonas had me over their house for a jam session and to talk about lots of random things including the chances of Blink 182 playing BDO’12, how disappointing it is not being able to see Van Halen play Soundwave and whether or not Pharrell Williams is really getting a full-body skin graft. Here are some of the other things discussed…

How have the recent gigs been going?

Fantastic! The crowds have been going crazy. We don’t want to pigeon-hole ourselves as a StreetParty band forever but Hugh does get an awesome walk in crowd, StreetParty crowds are there to party. You don’t get many people at those gigs having one or two beers, most are closer to 25…not that we condone youth binge drinking or anything, but it’s always a good time.

But you certainly don’t play off the same dream disco like the Cut Copies of countless other indie/dance hybrids do in Melbourne… you seem to rock a little harder…

Yeh I think we do, Michael grew up on a diet of punk music and he plays drums furiously, but that is offset by influences as random as Foals, Oasis and Linkin Park for the rest of us. Most of us love The Beatles, but Michael doesn’t, he just can’t get over Ringo Starr’s drumming style. We like to think we create melodic music but with the energy of punk bands like Brand New. Most indie bands don’t have that energy.

After hearing a story about the band rapping every lyric of Hybrid Theory to eachother on the way to their debut tour of Sydney earlier this year, which included a set at the One Love and Peace Festival, it’s obvious the band doesn’t take themselves as seriously as other energetic, frenetic rock ravers such as Klaxons. Asking about what they are listening to brings an array of answers…

We love this Melbourne band In Tongues, but they just broke up, Bon Iver’s new album is great, a bit of Panic At The Disco, The Gaslight Anthem and a bit of Duke Ellington, we’ve been sitting around our record player smoking a lot of weed and listening to acid jazz recently.

As tempting as it is to go down the road of discussing Duke Ellington vs Linkin Park, I’ll move on, what is the song-writing process in the band?

A lot of the time we build songs, Protoro (google it) was built off one riff and we went from there. Other times it’s inspired by something. The song Dead Ends is about Dave’s night out at Crown. He did a Caleb Followill that night on us…got his foot stuck in the tram track at 5.30am, spilled his coca-cola on himself and threw his phone against the wall. It was pretty funny. Our latest song Tell Me What You Want (think Children Collide/British India) is probably the most collaborative our songwriting has ever been, it’s probably why it’s bordering on prog-rock, we all wrote different parts and then joined them together. But we embrace those different ways our songs are evolving.

So you played your first festival slot last January. Are you planning on playing some more festivals in the near future? Do you agree with the critics that say Australia is festival saturated?

Yeh it is but I think the punters know the good ones from the bad ones, I think Splendour in the Grass is slowly moving up on the Big Day Out as the best in Australia. We would love to play some more festivals. Last time we were at Pyramid Rock Festival, we were kicking a football around and some footy jock stole our footy and kicked it away, so there is a bit of a bitter taste in our mouths from that, but yeh bring on the summer festival slots promoters!

And Pony this week for Warning. You guys are supporting Powerfuck. Do I need say anymore?

Haha well yeh, I guess we’ll have to rock a little extra hard to compete with those guys. Nah we can’t wait, Pony is a cool little venue in Melbourne, way different to playing at The Evelyn or The Espy, it’s a niche crowd – so it should be a fucking party.

The Latonas are playing at Pony this Thursday, 18th of August supporting Powerfuck at WARNING! It’s only $6 so come on down.

"Grolsch Beer - Meet the Latonas"

Film by Tim Hillier for Grolsch Grid.
facebook.com/?grolschbeer

About The Latonas:

The Latonas blend catchy guitar melodies, explosive drums and a three pronged vocal line up to create songs that will get you dancing and stay stuck in your head for days. Explosive and with energy to burn live, the boys have impressed at iconic venues around Melbourne and have opened for acts such as Tim Rogers ( You Am I ), Mark Seymour ( Hunters & Collectors ) as well as Wolf & Cub, Alpine and New Zealand's biggest buzz band Midnight Youth. What sets The Latonas apart from their peers is the face that their songs are original, catchy and extremely dance friendly.

About Tim Hillier:

Melbourne based Hillier has been skating and taking photos for years, with a natural progression to beautifully shot, contemplative films and videos. Working for the likes of Nike, Adidas, Nobody Denim, Local Peoples and Film Victoria, he is always filming or shooting something., appreciating the minutiae of everyday life, his friends and the outdoors.

"The Latonas"

who? The Latonas

what? Indie Rock/Post-Punk

where? Melbourne, Australia

if you like… bird and prey // crash the curb

The Latonas' brand of indie rock is dynamic and angular, fuelled by hectic guitars and punchy beats.

"Protoro" begins with the Pokemon battle theme - a hard act to follow, really. Nonetheless, the song that ensues is surprisingly brilliant.

An edgy indie-punk jam, blending crunchy Foals-esque guitars with coarse, catchy melodies akin to those of British India or Horsell Common.

"You Know You're Wrong" administers a similar approach, whilst upping the thrash-factor and swapping mazey melodies for a funky bass-riff.

The result? The Cure meets The Wombats meets a flock of angry geese, or something.

I think I'll leave it at that.

- Deaf Ambitions

"This is what alternative rock in 2011 is all about."

The Latonas’ video “Protoro” starts off foggy, but then it becomes crystal clear that this group really rocks and is powerful and professional. With a crazy great drummer pounding the beat, the new millennium has arrived in the form of alternative rock and this group is on the cutting edge of it. The guitarist and drummer really deliver a standout performance along with the lead singer. “Protoro” is a fast paced video and shows the group doing a live performance in a high energy show that is second to none along with their message. Watching the video gives you the sense that alternative rock has found its place, and the Latonas are definitely earning their spot in it out in front and right on top. This is what alternative rock in 2011 is all about. You’ll love the song and video if you have enough energy to keep pace with them, but even if you can’t, you’ll have a great time trying! - Musicdish TV

"Sonicbid Artist of the Week June 6th -12th 2011"

The Latonas are an exciting four-piece blending catchy guitar melodies, explosive drums and a three pronged vocal line up which combine seamlessly in songs that will get you dancing and stay stuck in your head for days. With influences ranging from The Beatles to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, they have a unique pop sensibility that can truly appeal to the masses. We had the chance to chat with guitarist/vocalist, Ben Runyan, about the bands beginning, what “indie” means to them, and where you can check them out next.

When did you decide to make a career/focus of music?

I guess it was around the start of last year. We’d been getting a bit of a following around Melbourne and thought it was something we’d really like to pursue. We all deferred from university for a year and started playing every week in the city to just get really tight and try out our new songs on different audiences. I think that really helped us to build our fan base and a growing reputation. It brought us to Sydney, a few festivals in and out of state, and we are organizing some gigs in Japan for towards the end of the year, so you could say it paid off.

What’s the best gig you ever played?

Our two EP launches in the last 12 months have both been crazy, the sense of excitement of releasing recordings always makes a gig memorable. Also having the place packed out helps. We played in the St. Kilda Town Hall last year in front of about 800 people supporting Dallas Crane and Tim Rogers from You Am I, which was a huge thrill for young guys like us. I think it was the crowd interaction that really made it worth it.

There’s been a lot of talk recently about what being an “indie” artist really means today. Some say the term is becoming obsolete. What does “indie” mean to you, and do you think there will be a different word we use in the next 10 years?

It’s definitely a word that gets thrown around so much that it’s lost all meaning. Everybody is an “indie” artist these days, including us. “Indie” to us means an ‘individual’ style of music, something you cant put into a single category. It used to be genre but all the best bands like Bloc Party and The Libertines have all changed or broken up. Maybe it’s out of fashion but some new sound will come along with some new term attached with it, as it does every 10 or so years. Personally I’m excited about it, we’re due for a revolution.

What’s your favorite way/tool/site for you to interact with your fans in the digital age? Do you recommend anything to other artists?

We predominantly use Facebook as a means to promote our band. Also we have an official website which we update with photos, videos and upcoming gigs. What we have also been involved in that we’d recommend to other bands is all the internet radio stations that are out there; we mainly use Jango and 7161.com along with many others, which we found through Sonicbids.

What’s your next big gig coming up? When/Where?

Later this year is the Kansai Music Conference in Osaka, Japan where we have been invited as a showcase artist, which is September 16-19th. We are really excited to bring our sound over there. Now all we need are the funds to get there…so…if there are any sponsors out there, happy to hear from you!

Sweet guitar work, nice hook. Production is pretty good. Shades of early PiL and other late 70's garage rock. And yeah, I am over 50...lolz.

Bio

The Latonas are an expansive four-piece Indie Rock band known for their exciting live shows. In demand throughout the Aussie Music scene, the band seamlessly blends catchy guitar melodies, explosive drums, and a three pronged vocal line up that delivers songs that get you dancing and stay stuck in your head for days.

Recently signed for a three month Song Licensing Deal ( January - March 2013) with Corbis who have offices in the US, Europe, Asia and Australia for their songs "Nightlife" & Protoro.

One highlight towards the end of 2012 was being named Apple Artist of the Week (34). http://adamnoteve.net/apple-artist-week-34-the-latonas/ which coincides well as a bookend being named as one of the top Indie Bands for 2011 on Muso2Muso.

The Latonas was also chosen as the Sonicbids Artist Spotlight. As Sonicbids hosts more than 200,000 artists on their website, being chosen as the Artist of the Week for a home page spotlight was both an honor and a testament to the band’s originality and talent. News Limited also featured the Latonas second EP launch on their front cover. Yes, News Limited is the Rupert Murdoch paper MX in Melbourne with a circulation of 320,000 per day!

The Latonas have been booked thick and fast at some of Melbourne’s iconic venues such as The Corner Hotel, The Esplanade Hotel, Prince Band Room, Revolver, The Evelyn Hotel, 161, Pony, The Tote and the Builders Arms to name a few. They have opened and shared the stage with Alpine, British India, the Iconic Tim Rogers (You am I), Mark Seymour ( Hunters &Collectors ), Wolf & Cub, Boy in a Box, Angry Andersons Allstar Band and New Zealand’s biggest buzz band.. Midnight Youth along with rising NZ band "The Early Birds". They also have taken to the stage at three festivals: Perth's Fly the Flag Festicval, Sydney's One Love & Peace Festival and the Scorcher Fest Festival.

The One Love and Peace Festival in Sydney was a great success and gave The Latonas exposure to the music starved punters in Sydney , the enthusiasm prompted founder Kaz Anderson to comment “the Latonas...well, the energy I saw in those guys on stage..WOW!

The Fly the Flag Festival on Australia in Perth saw The Latonas impress the crowd with their energy even in 40C+ heat, they never slowed down and impressed even Angry Anderson with their staying power.

The Scorcher Fest saw The Latonas play in front of jumping, moshing fans at the Cornish Arms they ripped through their blistering set.

Their song "The Morning After" from their first EP “Missiles” reached number one on the UK Indie Chart of www.7161.com and continues to remain there as of September 1st, 2011. The Latonas have also been very successful on Jango Radio where in just a few months they garnered over 800+ followers worldwide.

Currently, The Latonas can be heard on Internet Radio via, iRadio (Indie103.1FM) in LA, Whotune, Rukus Radio, Indie Dial, IM Radio, Jango. On Retro Radio out of Belgium, the band was named "Artist of the Week" in February 2011. The Latonas can also be heard on FM Radio on SYN FM and PBS FM. New rotation includes Triple J's new FM/Digital station and Triple J Unearthed. In addition to radio, The Latonas video " Protoro” was featured on Channel 31 Television and was greeted with a great response!

Drawing inspiration from some of their key influences including bands such as The Beatles, Kings of Leon, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, the Latona’s have developed a very unique sound that is completely their own and resonates with fans around the globe.

What sets The Latonas apart from their peers is the fact that their songs are original, accepted by all and extremely dance friendly. Their EP launch for Missiles in May 2010 was a sold out performance that had the audience cheering for more and still continues today.
Recently we released our 2nd Single in July which was played on SYN FM and followed that up with our 2nd Video for "You know your wrong" Be warned, there is nudity, a bare bum on a skateboard!!

We also had been selected as a showcase artist at the annual KMC in Osaka, Japan last September which we had to cancel due to some personal reasons which we were devastated by.

We were also pleasently surprised to be short listed for the Black Cat Festival in China and we are on the Stand By list for Indie Week in Toronto being held in October! Of course we don't want anything to happen to any bands, but we are ready to rock anywhere!
