The Lamplights

Australia's The Lamplights are a breath of fresh air upon first listen. In a time when music seems to be a wall of noise, screaming and/or whining singers and vocals soaked in Autotune, The Lamplights bring a subtle, fun and organic style of acoustic based Americana music. Americana music played by Ausies may sound like a contradiction but these cats do it extremely well and full of heart and sincerity.

Their song "Practise" reminded me a lot of The Squirrel Nut Zippers as it possessed a fun, quirky kind of vaudevillian sound which was a throw back to a time when music was fun and simple. This song really set a great tone for my introduction to this band. "Feel Alright" definitely caught me off guard as I was not expecting this. The band took a complete turn around from traditional sounding folk music to performing a song that sounded more along the lines of Del Amitri or Toad The Wet Sprocket. Don't get me wrong, this is a good thing. I love the two mentioned bands and I love it that The Lamplights are a versatile band that feels comfortable stretching across the boundaries.

"Home Again" is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard. Sounding like soulful and brooding gospel number, lead vocalist Ryan Gittoes' voice has this smokey, heartfelt sound that feels like comfortable blanket on a winter's night as it wraps you up in warmth. This song also features some outstanding and emotional guitar playing by slide guitarist Ashley Perrow which helps to add to the down home vibe that this song puts forward.

The Lamplights are a great band to keep your ears open for. If you like heartfelt, soothing and warm sounding acoustic based music, this is your band without a doubt. There is nothing fabricated or over produced here. The songs all sound like they could have been recorded in a living room of a log cabin as a roaring fire burns away and seals the warmth in. Open up your doors and let the Lamplights shine in your place. You can thank me later.

THE LAMPLIGHTS

GOLD COAST BLUES/FOLK OUTFIT THE LAMPLIGHTS LET A LOT OF PEOPLE INTO THEIR LIVES, OFTEN TOURING WITH SEVERAL OTHER MEMBERS, BUT THE SOUL OF THE GROUP LIES IN THE BOND BETWEEN RYAN GITTOES, JASON MCGREGOR AND ASHLEY PERROW. THEY CHAT TO MITCH KNOX AHEAD OF ‘SOUL NIGHT’ AT THE GLOBE.

“We all contribute to the process,” vocalist/guitarist Gittoes explains of creating songs with bandmates McGregor (guitar, vocals) and Perrow (Weisenborn slide/guitar/mandolin/banjo). “It generally starts with a groove and an emotional connection, idea or story. That emotion can be anything including happiness, grief, fear, loss, excitement, love...  We write at home or live.”
“Ryan is great at freestyling lyrics and we will try to remember the parts that 'stick' and then refine the song later,” Perrow offers. “If it’s moving people live we know we're on the right track. We all bring our unique talents to the song and it seems to flow easily.”
Perhaps unsurprisingly then, the three have – in their relatively short career span to date – formed a cohesive bond that finds them easily and freely exchanging ideas and suggestions.
“The important outcome is that the song is honoured and presented in the best way to convey the emotion behind the song,” Gittoes says. “We openly discuss arrangements, and instrumentation without fear of hurting someone's feelings. Part of the creative process is throwing in ideas and we trust each other to do that without feeling ridiculed or being absolutely attached to the idea.”

Having smashed out an eponymous debut full-length already and solidified their rep with their locals, The Lamplights now find themselves preparing to make their maiden journey to Brisbane.

“We’re pretty stoked about playing our first show in Brisbane and having a chance to connect with and build a new audience,” McGregor enthuses. “The same goes for building collaborations with bands in Brisbane and hopefully we can put similar shows on around the Gold Coast and build a local touring network in southeast Queensland.”

Two young dads best known for entertaining shoppers at the local markets are now preparing to take their musicalLamp lights 1 talents to Europe.

Ryan Gittoes met Ashley Perrow at the Currumbin markets and asked if he could join in the song.

By the time they'd finished their first session together, the pair had been booked for a performance.

The 'Lamplights', Ryan and Ashley came into our Mermaid Beach studios with Kylie Mitchell-Smith for 'Art and About'.
